Here's a Free, Third-Person Shooter character controller, made in
@godotengine
4.0! All the code is open-source, free to reuse in your projects, as usual.
Release post and download link:
GitHub repository:
As promised, Godot the robot is out, free and open-source!
You can find Godot, Sophia, and more in this repository:
Just copy the files to your projects to start using it.
Fully-fledged, open-source game engines are so important for our industry.
Because their incentive is to empower their community first. That's how they succeed and grow. And you're guaranteed to always own the technology, by design.
This cannot change if you pick a…
@gamemakerstk
Our offer to provide you with unlimited Godot support is still open, when the time is right for you! Don't hesitate to get in touch, when the time comes, if you decide to give Godot a good try.
We're also working on free and open source tools for explorable explanations if you…
We're not going to rush Godot content.
You can't do really high quality education without taking your time.
We're hard at work with several high schools to build not just a tutorial series, but an entire curriculum.
This relies on new technology, of which GDTour, the framework…
We have a lot coming for learning
@godotengine
.
GDTour will allow everyone in the community to make interactive tutorials in the editor.
It not only works for the Godot editor itself: it also works for your plugins.
As with all our code, we'll release under the MIT license.
Learn GDScript From Zero 1.0 is out!
28 lessons, dozens of practices to learn
@godotengine
's GDScript language right in your browser.
No download required, and it's completely Free!
We're giving away 25 copies of
@KenneyNL
's wonderful KenShape pixel-to-3D art app.
Paint pixels, paint their depth, and boom! You get a 3D model.
It runs on Windows and Linux.

@KenneyNL
to support his amazing work. 😄
I can only second that.
When I started out, a single 3D software license would cost thousands of dollars, and there was no open-source game engine anywhere close to the feature set of Godot.
The free and open-source options we have today are incredible!
Can we appreciate for a minute that at some point great people came together and created top tier free software that in the past would cost you thousands of dollars?
Sky shaders in Godot 4.0 let you code custom skies, with all the features you want (clouds passing by, day and night cycle...).
The best part? The scene's lighting automatically updates accordingly. Notice how changing the clouds' colors at 11" instantly brightens the scene.
They say that love is happiness for the someone's sole existence.
I'm blessed not only to know what that feels like, but also to have that person by my side.
This weekend, I'm making sure that Learn GDScript From Zero, the open-source app to learn
@godotengine
's programming language, works as well as possible for learning Godot 4.
Fixing 10s of minor issues along the way.
New release soon!
Try the app:
Some people said, "you're copying Mario" and yes, for this open-source character controller, we've made the mini-level like a part of Whompus Fortress to test the character.
But my heart goes to Kirby! Now all that's left is to have Sophia hop onto the star and fly away.
Godot is already bigger than you might think. There are a bunch of companies with millions in funding based on Godot. W4, Ramatak, Padho Labs, The Mirror...
At GDQuest, we are 16 now (12 on payroll, 4 freelance). Entirely self-funded, just doing education and open-source.
The new particle collisions in Godot 4.0 make rain effects pretty easy. We still have to figure out collisions around corners, but they seem to work well in both 2d and 3d.
I'm happy to announce I got hired to work part-time on the
@godotengine
manual (godot-docs repository)!
The job involves auditing the content, improving the structure, workflow, improving or cleaning up existing content, and writing new content.
Funded by a generous donor.
General engines like Unity, Unreal, and Godot are so packed with features that at first, the user interface can feel like a spaceship control panel.
So, we spent months developing a new open-source ed-tech, Godot Tours, to help newcomers get their foot in the door and figure out…
The new navigation link in Godot 4.0 allows AIs to do advanced pathfinding like waiting for platforms, climbing ladders, and many more actions that interrupt the flow of pathfinding.
Big thanks to the Godot navigation contributor Smix8 for helping us with this demo!
We are working on a convenient way for you to test and reuse our Godot character models. They're just the skins, ready to copy into your game and snap to a character controller.
We'll open-source this within the next few months.

@heytibo
An essential thread if you're considering switching to Godot: take the time to assess alternative engines, and find the best fit for you.
We strongly believe in Godot, but no engine or tech is the right fit for everyone.
So, big news yesterday. I'm appalled at the impact this will have on the
#Unity
ecosystem, and
#gamedev
at large. There's just no way this can lead to anything good for anyone.
#GodotEngine
is getting a lot of positive attention in reaction, so I want to address a few things. 🧵
Godot 4 is also a great game engine to make 2D games. We're not forgetting those of you who still want to do 2D.
@moisesjpelaez
and
@heytibo
are working on a pixel platformer demo to show you how to code all kinds of moves and mix high res shaders and pixel art graphics.
So we're making a video about everything new and improved in Godot 4.0.
The list is so long that, despite making a fully scripted video and leaving many smaller things out, it's still over 30 minutes...
This scene shows balls with different physics properties in
@godotengine
4.0.
Ragdolls work well now! And even large balls show pretty good interactions.
If you push the large balls into corners you'll get jitters, but physics simulation feels more stable than it used to be.
I'm getting married tomorrow.
I'm taking some days off to spend with my fiancee.
I'll be back on Thursday! If you send me a message, I will get back to you then.
Unity's CEO insulting you, Unity merging with a malware company...

We reached 50,000 euros in little over 3 days!
Meaning... the GDScript learning app will be Free and Open-Source, available for every teacher, school, and Godot user.
We'll release the source code with docs and a series to learn GDScript's syntax.
Last year we brought you a free open-source app to learn to code from zero. We're now working on the new generation and Godot 4 remake.
This new version will have more content, it will work on mobile, and be based on native web technologies for full web accessibility support.
Godot 4.0 is almost out!
We'll be running a sale for 1 week after the release: all courses 50% off! And if you buy during the sale you'll get Godot 4 remakes of courses at no extra cost later this year.
You'll get all the details on the release date.
Unity's laying off 600 more workers to set itself up for "greater growth."
These layoffs seem to occur after being profitable in the first quarter. With last year's layoffs, they've let go of over 1000 people?
Unity was losing money so this kind of stuff was bound to happen,…
"Godot is slow"
"Godot's nodes are slow"
That's true if you use everything by default, but Godot actually gives you great tools to increase performance a lot.
Using simple nodes, shooting 2000 bullets slows down my computer.
Using Godot's data-driven servers I get 10,000+
If Godot gets a new visual scripting language, it should generate GDScript code, similar to how the visual shader editor generates shader code.
- People learning gamedev could easily transition from visual scripting to coding.

This terrain editor for
@godotengine
is already great and it keeps getting better! You can tell it's developed by and for game developers with a lot of attention to detail.
And it's free and open source software! Be sure to follow Cory
Finding the mouse position on the terrain using the GPU, without collision.
This clever method greatly improves the previous method used in Terrain3D. It's considerably faster, works much closer and farther away, and is more accurate. See 🧵

Proximity and distance fade are really convenient built-in options in Godot 3d materials: you can very easily make things fade into one another or fade when the player is getting too close without having to know about shaders.
🚨AMAZING Godot tip!
Try this simple way to solve for mesh blocking view of the player:
On your objects material, set the Distance Fade Mode to PixelDither and adjust the settings. Mesh near the camera will now fade and reveal the player!

Testing Godot 4's new rendering engine, I'm impressed by how in just 2 minutes you can get good-looking lights.
The process is much easier and faster than in Godot 3.
Navigation got a lot of love in Godot 4.1 with completely reworked obstacle avoidance. Agents can now have priority and push others away. It works great for groups of units or when NPCs need to cross paths.
Free and open-source feature demos:
Are you interested in a video on overcoming procrastination and becoming more productive?
I used to be procrastination in person, 12 years later I can focus even on the work I like the least. Got a few things to share there.
You can like the tweet if you'd like to see that.
Can't wait to code with GDScript 2.0.
The language feels much more pleasant and robust:
- Type checks are much more solid (typed arrays, no more cyclic errors...)
- Many improvements to error messages!
- First-class and anonymous functions for flexible code patterns
- ...
Thibaud's reworking the third person controller demo for the Godot 4.0 release. Now with nicer water and sky shaders to showcase some of the shader language improvements.

Unity's merging with a malware company. That really sucks, Unity users, I'm sorry for you.
Luckily for us, it's the kind of thing that can never, ever happen with
@godotengine
.
Free Software like Godot is yours forever.
I've not been very present lately. It's because we have been deeply focused on preparing a Godot curriculum for schools.
I'm really proud to say that a handful of public high schools in Sweden and the US already replaced Unity with Godot, using our curriculum, even though it's…
After 1 year of work, the new tileset and tilemap editor for Godot 4 is looking amazing!
@gr0ud
gave me a tour of the features. It packs SO much! I couldn't list them all in a tweet.
It's a complete and convenient level editor right inside Godot.
Huge thanks to food-please who's rebooted Godot Open RPG.
The map and grid-based movement are in, including NPC movement. Running in Godot 4.
Coming up: combat system, dialogues, and more.
It's free and open-source:
Godot Tour is shaping up! It got a lovely new UI designed by
@MenicaFolden
, who also ran focused user testing sessions to ensure people new to Godot had a good experience.
Sophia's head, designed by
@TysonTanX
, is a placeholder for now.

Godot 4.1 is out! It's a real bug buster that still packs a punch.
It comes with over 1000 bug fixes and the work of over 300 people.

Full release notes:
I'd like to give a shoutout to my team at GDQuest.
They did excellent work for the Godot 4.0 release. It's thanks to them that you can enjoy 20+ free demo scenes to test new features:
Special thanks in the following tweet.
Thibaud's working on new art styles for future 2D demos and courses.
There'll be pixel art ones, and this is a test for higher resolution graphics and a pretty warm style.
What do you think?
Great news, the Godot 4.0 release sale went great, so we won't need to do another crowdfunding campaign!
Crowdfunding takes a lot of time and energy we can put into open-source code and learning material instead this time.
The team started this week already!
Our next demo for
@godotengine
4 focuses on action games.
By the Godot 4 stable release, we should have a good number of free and open-source demos:
- 3D Third Person Shooter (Ratchet and Clank-like)
- 3D Platformer (Mario-like)
- 3D FPS (Doom-like)
- ...
2D demos coming too!
Do you like this art style?
We're trying to have soft environments on which characters can really pop, and to give some demos a bit of a wholesome or at least warm feel.

@heytibo
We got funded in under 8 hours!
Just, WOW.
We decided we'll open-source the GDScript learning app (client + server) if we reach 50,000 euros.
Might seem high but this app's a lot of work and budget, research, and open-sourcing things adds more work (documentation...).
The new canvas groups in Godot 4.0 let you effortlessly combine multiple sprites into a single image. Now making cutout characters render fine just takes a couple of clicks!
This combines super well with outline, glow, and other shaders!
Between Kickstarter and PayPal backers, we reached the ultimate stretch goal!
So it's confirmed:
We'll hire a Godot developer for a €10,000 project to improve Godot 4.0.
Now it's a little game! Made in Godot 4, using real-time outdoor global illumination.
Excellent work
@henriquelalves
and
@heytibo
We're impressed by
@godotengine
4's early betas. It crashes occasionally (normal, it's beta), but we've been able to work pretty smoothly.
We made a video to invite disappointed Unity users to try Godot:
It may or may not be for you, but it's worth trying Godot now, especially version 4.0, currently in development.
It's a small download, no install required, free and open-source forever.
The Godot 4 third-person character demo has a new projectile preview and launch algorithm.
Big thanks to
@SebastianLague
for his videos on kinematic equations! Now the code's simple and readable.
Sebastian's video:
It's so easy and convenient to run any code in
@godotengine
's editor!
No need to make plugins or anything, you just add one annotation at the top of scripts, and if statements if you have code that should only run in the editor or in-game.
We're experimenting with using 3D in 2D games in Godot 4.
With clever viewport magic,
@heytibo
could give this cute slime a sharp mouth.

How I learned to code:
Got a C++ programming book, hated it, quit code forever.
Years later, learned a no-code game engine (Construct 2).
I later learned about Python, and code didn't feel so different from no code.
Now, I teach game code for a living.

Thanks to your support, they'll be bigger and more refined than before.
We're working on new technology to have more interactive practices.
Coming later this year!
You should learn Godot now.
Godot 4 will be much better and faster, but it'll still be Godot.
All you're doing by waiting is giving others a headstart learning this powerful engine.
Godot 3 is already powerful and pleasant to work with.
Thibaud's making the temple models more modular for our upcoming FPS demo for

We'll open-source this demo in Q1 2023.
I'll be presenting
@godotengine
tomorrow at
@GameCampFrance
at 11:40 in the Dragon room, in French.
We'll discuss the engine's pros and cons, but also why we think our industry should embrace free and open-source software, like the web industry does.
We've gone out of our way…
