People like this are the reason why I took 6 months out of my life to make THE POLITICS OF KAMEN RIDER BLACK SUN on YouTube as a small-time nobody creator.
Don't EVER be this guy. EVER.
After seeing some shit-for-brains post hating on Showa era Kamen Rider, all I can say is that you need to unlearn the gimmicks and appreciate the action and stunt work on display from that era. Look at this OG here!

So I watched
#CITYHUNTER
TWICE on Netflix over the weekend, and I LOVE IT TO DEATH!!! Sure, I haven't seen NICKY LARSON or MR. MUMBLE yet, but as the Citypop City Hunter guru here, I'm in awe of what was accomplished here. Check out my 🧵below to see why:
Finished Toho's 忍びの家 (House of Ninjas) last night & IT IS A MUST WATCH! It's a character-driven tale that rejects the STEREOTYPE of the ninja by demonstrating how a family of SHINOBI persevere in Modern Japan. Here's my 🧵 so buckle up:
Moon Lee's (李賽鳳) 1st fight in ANGEL TERMINATORS 2 (火種) from 1993. This is a MUST WATCH! Special thanks to Sphinx for posting it on YouTube. FUN FACT: this also features Yukari Oshima (Farrah Cat) from Bioman!

For all my toku mutuals, this is one thing that Kazuya Shiraishi taught me recently...TOEI isn't just synonymous with anime and tokusatsu...
TOEI, in Japan, is synonymous with NINKYO-EIGA. Yakuza films, crime films, hell, period films.
Japanese band T-SQUARE has inspired video game soundtracks aplenty (Guile theme below, Super Mario Bros and even F-Zero) and they're celebrating their 45th anniversary. Reply to this post and I'll post a song rec that matches you. CHECK 'EM OUT!

This is the criticism that Asian diaspora creatives like myself need to hear. Like really, if she had a Black Friend in the mix, it would've been way better (along with dropping the AAVE). 2 or more things can be true at the same time.
If you're a Toei
#Tokusatsu
fan in need of some
#horror
movie action, then check out my 🧵about Samurai Reincarnation (MAKAI TENSHO 魔界転生) from 1981, directed by Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale) & starring Sonny Chiba as folk hero Jubei Yagyu, who squares off with the undead:
This film blew me away. Slow building yes, but it's mise en scene, camerawork and subtext all added up to an amazing climax. CURE is pure cinema, and the
@Criterion
release is ASTOUNDING!
@FDsignifier
From an AAPI perspective with regards to Shang Chi, that's not all. Simu unfortunately doesn't fit the kind of 'facial look' that Northern Chinese folks are looking for. Like literally, folks got mad because they think his 'eyes are too small'. SMH.
The Last Megalopolis could've been so much more. A toku horror film with fantastic camerawork, occult horror, and production design that's marred by the worst kind of 'condense this book series into a feature film' mindset you've EVER seen. You're better off with the OVAs.
I consumed a LOT of TOEI media throughout my life and let me tell ya - toku and anime hasn’t been their priority for the longest time. TOEI, in Japan, is known for yakuza, action, drama and period films / TV. That’s their focus, and always will be.
A reminder to all toku fans
Tokusatsu isnt really toei's main business or priority, plus IMO, i dont think they hate us, its more like they never had that vision in their company
Its different with tsupro who only have ultraman & always wanted to expand since their founding
If you need an action show that's full of heart, drama, and gory, well choreographed tactical supe slugging, then you MUST see
#Moving
on Hulu/Disney+. This is my favorite show of 2023 so far & it beats Bloodhounds by a mile. Here's my 🧵on why you MUST see this!
Will work on THE POLITICS OF ULTRAMAN BLAZAR slowly, but one thing I will expand on is this: Gento’s flaws aren’t there because he’s too committed to being a hero…
The conflict is there because he’s GGFJ. Blazar represents hope because of he sees the nuance beyond duty.
I like that Gento's flaws are the result of him trying to commit too hard to either his role as a hero or as a parent
Ultimately he just wants to protect those closest to him, and that doesn't always result in the best choices
But he's always trying his best to reconcile both
I was beyond the moon yesterday when I watched this. For reals fam, please go outside your wheelhouse and explore the rest of Asian cinema. Whether its drama, action, comedy or romance, it has so much to offer. Remember what Bong Joon-ho said...
Dev Patel on 'Monkey Man' being called the South-Asian 'John Wick':
"I'm a huge fan of the franchise but this film is born from my love of so much action cinema expanding from Bruce Lee to Sammo Hung to Jet Lee to Jackie Chan to the Korean cinema and also Bollywood [...]".

I love this damn post so much...
On a shameless note, if you're interested in some discussion about Fascism on Kamen Rider, I just released this video on my YouTube. Would love your feedback on it but it's a very long vid:
So fellow Kaiju Film Fans....what are your thoughts about THIS FILM? Wife and I rewatched it early this week and it still slaps, but I wanted to hear other peoples thoughts on it.
I dug Jeff Wincott's MISSION OF JUSTICE more than I thought I would last year. It's DTV martial arts action from 1992 but one noticeable person in the film is a very young KOICHI SAKAMOTO. What a BEAST he was! And yes, this was 2 years before GUYVER: DARK HERO!
@Marcosatsu
Kuuga's message of hope has aged considerably, given how much social and economic strife is hidden underneath the surface in Japan. It works for a 2000s Japan, but it's toothless for 2020s Japan (plz note that I LOVE this show). May do a video on this one day.
Need some films as primer before you get into
#kamenriderblacksun
? Check out these FOUR FILMS because it's a show STEEPED in Japanese politics. Going in thinking it's a
#tokusatsu
show is a trap because it's literally an unsubtle German Suplex against Right Wing Japan.
I saw this fight scene with my Dad and brother while visiting my grandparents in Thailand in 93 / 94 (I was around 10 or 11 I think). Jetman was my 1st Sentai show before MMPR, but this scene lives rent free in my mind.

Dear peeps,
Thank you all for subbing to the YouTube channel. We are now at 860 and we're SOOO close to 1000 so keep 'em coming! FYI: the Ultraman Blazar script is 45-50% complete so cross your fingers!
Also, would y'all like a 1000 Sub Special?
First preview of "City Hunter" japanese live-action film (which I found in a Netflix promo video).
Directed by Ryohei Suzuki (Hentai Kamen, Tokyo Tribe) and based on Tsukasa Hojo's manga.
Coming to Netflix on April 25 (worldwide).
Not everything has to be destroyed. Not every monster has to be killed. But also: "Weapons testing might wake shit up that needs to stay asleep. You might be fighting against a teaterium kaiju that's actually trying to save the planet. You need to sleep Gento so STFU!"
Antonio Inoki dressed as a homeless man in order to bring attention to the plight of the homeless. He then set up a soup
kitchen in a local Tokyo park and fed 1,000 homeless and unemployed people.
They even made a Antonio Inoki homeless figure.
Saw the Warner Archives BluRay of Drunken Master 2 last nite and, overall, I loved it! Fun, action-packed, clear picture but the subs are hit-or-miss (not a dealbreaker but you won't find him announcing his attacks though). Felt like I was in high school again 😭

. Anti-LGBTQ idiots like Nishida below are real lawmakers in Japan, hurting people EVERYDAY.
A subtitled video of Upper House lawmaker Nishida Shōji (LDP) explaining why a bill against anti-LGBT "discrimination" had its wording changed to only mention "unfair discrimination." LGBTQ+ activists have protested against the watered-down bill.
First time seeing Righting Wrongs fully and I loved it! Saw the HK version first and will hopefully see the Mandarin language cut at some point soon. If there was any issue that I saw with this release, it might have been the sound but maybe that's just me.
KARATE WARRIORS is basically what happens when LONE WOLF & CUB meets Toei's brand of sleazy, Post-War Karate schlock and IT'S GOLD! With ferocious action, fine pacing and an epic score by Dragon Ball's SHUNSUKE KIKUCHI, this is Yamaguchi & Chiba's best collab by a country mile!
Last weekend's genre watch was good for the most part. Iron Angels was fun, especially with Moon Lee and

god Hideki Saijo. V/H/S was good for the most part, but some vignettes worked better than others (Tuesday the 17th and 10/31/98 were my faves).

1. All the hatred for Kamen Rider Black Sun is unfounded and goes to show that ppl aren't interested in learning about Modern Japan and its ppl.
2. Toku fans that don't enjoy Martial Arts films are suspect to me.
3. Kenji Ohba is the GOAT.
City Hunter, a Japanese live-action film adaptation of the beloved manga is coming April 25!
Follow number one sweeper Ryo Saeba (Ryohei Suzuki) as he cleans up trouble in the underworld of modern-day Shinjuku.
I'm planning a YouTube video and watched Duel to the Death & Legend of a Fighter for the first time this week as part of my research. Both were amazing & have left me speechless. Duel in particular was both action packed & poignant. Thanks to

One day I'm going to make a YouTube video about my love for this man. The original Iron Chef show was so formative in my appreciation for cooking & Chen Kenichi was my favorite. Chinese cuisine is deep and vast, and he really was one of my gateways into it. RIP Chen Kenichi.
So I watched Shin Kamen Rider last night and I have a lot of thoughts about it. Not sure if I should do a video review because that would take too long, so here's my 🧵below:
Saw my 1st Mario Bava film last weekend and it was sumptuous. BLACK SABBATH was full of color and dread, and I cannot wait to see BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. Though all the stories were great, the 3rd was THE BEST! Any other Bava recs are welcome!
My Shaw Brothers faves include:
8 Diagram Pole Fighter
Crippled Avengers
One Armed Swordsman
The Chinese Boxer
Heroes of the East
Mad Monkey Kung Fu
The Avenging Eagle
The Magic Blade
The Boxer from Shandong
Masked Avengers
and many more...

in 1958, the Shaw Brothers Studio (邵氏兄弟) was founded - What is their greatest output in your eyes?
Saw 13 STEPS OF MAKI last night from the Sonny Chiba Collection Vol.2 BD and it just might be my new favorite Etsuko Shihomi film! Sure it has the same ol' Toei-exploitation, but it's littered with so much Japan Action Club goodness that it's a must watch!

It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally mine. The only film franchise to have Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Cynthia Rothrock AND Kamen Rider Ichigo! Thank you babe.
When I spoke about Revisionism in Japan via The Politics of Kamen Rider Black Sun on YouTube, I want folks to understand that this sentiment below is NOT FRINGE.
I can't wait for the chapters on Manchukuo, Sugamo Prison, and 五・一九事件 (the May 19th Incident). FML.
Unilateralism is a very real issue in politics and Blazar has shown how sometimes, international organizations with the best of intentions sometimes act without regard to concern of locals who might provide more nuance to a situation. Will hope to expand on this in the video.
My favorite fight in 1978's HEROES OF THE EAST (中華丈夫) is the Spear Fight between Gordon Liu & Kikaider / GoRanger actor Nobuo Yana. It says SO MUCH without saying a word...

Wife & I saw Hammer's THE VAMPIRE LOVERS last night for the first time and OMG was it entertaining!!! Gorier than I thought it'd be, and Peter Cushing was in it too! This is what I call HAMMER HORROR!
Some of you PR super fans need to watch a martial arts movie and touch grass FFS. Better yet, GO WATCH A MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE WITH CHOREO BY KOICHI SAKAMOTO then touch grass.
