Six years ago today (January 6, 2014) the 15-year-old school boy, Aitzaz Hasan Bangash, was killed while preventing a suicide bomber from attacking a school in Pakistan's Hangu District. Aitzaz's resistance saved the lives of 2000 students that were in the school at the time.

Last pics of brilliant Urdu poet Saghar Siddiqui. He became a morphine addict and homeless. He would write poems, recite them on the streets and then burn them. He died in 1974 on a footpath in Lahore. A year later, a stray dog who was often seen with him, died on the same spot.

Electricity was introduced in Karachi in 1913 by its earliest mayors, Harichand Rai. He was a Hindu Sindhi. That’s why Karachi was called (and still is) ‘city of lights.’ Interestingly, it didn’t become common in US till 1920, even though the electric bulb was invented there.

80yrs ago in Aug 1940, a Sikh opened a cafe called India Tea House in Lahr. After 1947 it was renamed Pak Tea House. It became a popular hangout of progressive intellectuals. In 1980s it began to incur losses. In 1999, it closed down. It was reinaugurated in 2013 by Nawaz Sharif.

Emirates Airlines first plane was acquired on a lease from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Its pilots were trained by PIA. They got their commercial licenses from Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan. Emirates first ever flight was to Karachi (Oct, 25, 1985). It was EK600.
