NORAD responded to an event in the Special Flight Rules Area surrounding Washington D.C. this morning. NORAD directed @USCG rotary wing aircraft to investigate and the event was resolved without incident. The defense of Canada and the United States is NORAD's top priority.

NORAD also positively identified a Russian A-50 supporting the intercepted aircraft which loitered within the ADIZ for approx 1.5 hrs and came within 30nm of Alaskan shores. All Russian aircraft remained in int'l airspace and at no time entered 🇺🇸 or 🇨🇦 sovereign airspace.

On Sept 11, NORAD detected, tracked and positively identified 2 Russian maritime patrol aircraft entering & operating in the Alaskan & Cdn Air Defense Identification Zones. The aircraft remained in international airspace, not entering 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 sovereign airspace. #WeHaveTheWatch
