When all is said and done, Saint Peter's is going to reap $100M worth of publicity from this run. It will transform the university. This is why you invest in college sports.
Four months ago, at Saint Peter's home opener vs. LIU, the attendance was 434 (four hundred and thirty-four). The game was not televised.
Tonight, the eyes of the nation are on the Peacocks.
Only in college basketball.
A reporter asked Doug Edert about his "Kobe-esque moment" of jumping on the press table in the postgame celebration.
Holloway (shooting Edert a death stare): "You got up on the table?"
Edert: Next question, next question.
No surprise, but nonetheless: Shaheen Holloway is expected to finalize terms in the coming days to become Seton Hall’s next head coach. He’ll be introduced no later than Wednesday.
A favorite son -- the favorite son -- is coming home.
Student-fan to Cooley: "That's $7 million per win."
Cooley walked over and said: "You know what, I'm rich as a motherfucker. I'm rich as shit."
I swear that just happened.
More people watched Seton Hall-Indiana State (1.4 million) than watched a bunch of NCAA Tournament games. It also beat out some NBA and MLB ratings and was the most-watched Seton Hall game of the season.
The decision to play in the NIT was a slam dunk for the program & its fans
Ron Harper on his message to the fans: "I hope we made them proud. We put our heart and soul into this university, into the Block R we wear so proudly."
Villanova gave Myles Powell the game ball to mark his latest milestone (he became Seton Hall's all-time leader in 3-pointers).
No hassle, nobody trying to pry it out of his arms.
See how that works?
Steve Pikiell says Rutgers "absolutely" will accept an NIT bid. Wants to give postgrad Caleb McConnell and the other guys a chance to keep playing.
The right move. No question.
Izzo: "I told Mulcahy and McConnell after the game, they've been great for the Big Ten. I really appreciate the way they play. I hope I never see them again."
One year removed from a 4-22, with a coach and a backcourt up from the Division 2 level, 16th-seeded FDU is sending the Big Ten champion home.
The greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history but make no mistake -- the Knights were the better team tonight.
Only in college hoops.
This comment has been misread by some. SPU is not making $100M off this. The 6-plus hours of free national advertising on CBS, 10 days of being the biggest story in the NYC market & countless social-media impressions will change a school that had zero profile outside North Jersey
So yes, there was an impassioned halftime speech that had Rutgers coming out of the break ready to run through a brick wall.
It wasn't by Steve Pikiell.
It was by Geo Baker.
There is NO metric for the power of great leadership.
Rutgers OWNS Indiana.
That's seven of the last eight vs. the Hoosiers. Every time, RU got it done in the second half.
The tougher program -- by a mile.
Willard on job rumors: "When I get home tomorrow I will discuss things with my agent. I'll be honest: If I'm not here next year, if Shaheen Holloway is here, that would be the happiest thing that ever happened to me"
Geo Baker handled his 8-minute press conference with incredible class, grace and thoughtfulness.
It has to be hard to be the only player to speak for the team in a spot like this.
He has earned a high, high place in the Rutgers Athletics pantheon.
No-star recruits. No NIL. No alumni collective. No football money.
FDU joins Saint Peter’s & Princeton in thumbing its nose at the big boys as New Jersey carries the banner for March Madness.
Column on a historic moment for a state and a sport:
Myles Johnson is going to the Sweet 16 with UCLA. Yes he’s a reserve and a role player. But a great guy and model student-athlete. Represented Rutgers with class and I know most RU fans are happy for him.
The AP Top 25 Poll is in:
Historic day for Jersey hoops as Seton Hall ranks 10th, Rutgers breaks in at 24th.
First time ever they’ve appeared in the same AP poll.
Get this: Fox wanted Powell for the postgame interview and Myles insisted on having Ro do the spot with him.
Another reason why Myles Powell is in a class by himself.
I’m deeply saddened to say good friend and well-respected scribe J.P. Pelzman has passed away. J.P. was such a good guy and a pro’s pro of a sportswriter. It was a privilege to spend many nights with him courtside and in the press room covering Seton Hall basketball. (more...)
Rutgers center Myles Johnson is working a 25-hour-a-week internship at IBM this semester. He's got the laptop in Indy right now.
I spoke with his boss at IBM.
Suffice it to say the office has a special interest in March Madness: via
@asburyparkpress
Butler-Minnesota in the NIT featured higher-quality basketball than Colorado State-Virginia, by a lot.
That's what happens when the selection committee chair doesn't know the difference between metrics and "the matrix."
When I arrived at school to pick up my daughter this afternoon, her math teacher (who I'd never met) asked me how Rutgers stacks up against Notre Dame.
March Madness has hit New Jersey.
He ran off just about the entire roster he inherited, then went 4-8.
This is an award that's been won by Muhammad Ali, Arthur Ashe, Billie Jean King, the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.
It's sad what a punchline Sports Illustrated has become.
During the interview session, Myles Powell asked if he could borrow my phone/recorder. Then he jumped into the media scrum and asked Ro Gill how it feels to be the best big man in the country.
Classic.
There's only one Myles Powell.
It's unacceptable and unprecedented for the Big East, home of 3 of the past 7 national champions, to be a 3-bid league (in 1993, 20-win Syracuse was ineligible). Obviously atrocious luck was involved, but I'm sure league officials will take a hard look at scheduling too.
Just had a long talk with Jaden Bediako, the unsung Pirate. More on that later, but he signed off the interview by saying, “I’m a Pirate for life.”
Indeed he is.
Seton Hall 79, Louisville 77: Hall just recorded the Selection Sunday equivalent of a triple-word score: Ranked win, road win, non-conference win. Massive.
The marks the first time since 1991 that Rutgers and Seton Hall both made the NCAA Tournament.
And if RU advances -- they'll BOTH be in San Diego.
Guess who else will be there, writing his ass off?

’s Instagram — former Hall teammates swapping jerseys in the league.
Two composite 3-star recruits, by the way. Hard work matters.
The student section has been told to tone it down by the officiating crew. I sit right there and heard nothing unusual.
Grow some skin, for crying out loud.
This is Rutgers' most impressive win of the season -- even better than beating No. 1 Purdue at home.
First time the program ever has beaten three straight ranked foes.
The Scarlet Knights probably are 3 home wins away from returning to the NCAA Tournament. WOW.
The dream comes true for Shavar Reynolds, who drills a 3-pointer with less than a second left as Seton Hall stuns St. John's 76-74.
Not just a win for the Pirates, but for every walk-on every under-recruited kid, every gym rat with a vision.
You can't make this stuff up!
Jay Wright on the Big East and NYC: “We own it. It’s natural and authentic for the Big East . . . When the ACC or Big Ten comes in, it’s not natural for them. If they get to enjoy it, that’s good. It’s our home. It’s what we’ve done and who we are.”
Princeton guys are raving about dinner at Vincenzo's last night. Big-time Italian restaurant in Louisville. Not the typical fare for the Tigers on the road.
Here are the composite recruiting rankings of Rutgers' top seven players. I will never tire of tweeting this:
Geo Baker (414), Caleb McConnell (335), Ron Harper (175), Paul Mulcahy (156), Cliff Omoruyi (51), Dean Reiber (398), Aundre Hyatt (360).
Holloway has privately and publicly endorsed Ryan Whalen as Saint Peter’s “coach in waiting.” Momentum seems to be gathering behind his right-hand man to take the torch. Might also help ward off poachers of a solid core of undergrads.
I'm told there are 14,000 tickets out for Seton Hall-Villanova.
This team deserves more.
Myles Powell, Quincy McKnight & Ro Gill deserve more.
Don't want to hear about the tip time. Have more coffee Thursday.
This is a once-in-a-generation moment.
Time for fans to seize it.
Steve Pikiell said no one could hear Paul Mulcahy calling out instructions today because of the noise. A reminder of how tough of a venue Mackey is. The Big Ten has some incredible home courts.
Ron Harper Jr. says this is the most confident he's been that Rutgers can win the Big Ten Tournament because the team chemistry is "levels above" where it's been in the past.
I'm not going to repost it and add to the BS, but
@RexChapman
tweeting a photo of the wrong FDU gym (from its D-3 affiliate campus in Morris County) and saying "Look where these guys play!" is malpractice.
The Rothman Center, the Knights' actual home, is a nice facility.
Final score in OT: Rutgers 68, Ohio State 64
Rutgers evens the score against the Buckeyes, improves to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten -- and most likely will appear in the Associated Press Top 25 tomorrow.
How about Mawot Mag? Player development, folks. Player development.
7 years ago today, Miriam was born at 2 pounds. We don't have any photos because she was completely purple and immediately whisked to the NICU. The doctor said she had an 85 percent chance to make it.
This morning: "Daddy, this balloon is as big as your tummy."
I'll take it.
I’ve covered Kevin Willard since the day Seton Hall hired him. Early in that first year he said something I’ve never forgotten. As he prepares to move on, my column assessing his tenure and the state of the program.
Maryland fans should read this, too.
Tobin Anderson on his coaching path:
"I was told, 'go back and be a Division 1 assistant. We won't hire a Division 2 coach.'
"If I ever retire I'm going to start a search firm, because I can find 10-12 small-college coaches who can do just as good a job as we did here."
Rest in peace Joe Boylan. We spoke for 45 minutes Tuesday.
The last thing he told me: "Never delay gratitude."
It's a lesson I'll carry the rest of my life.
Jersey guys in the Final Four:
Dan Hurley (UConn) St. Anthony HS/Seton Hall U
Adama Sanogo (UConn) Patrick School
Isaiah Wong (Miami) South Brunswick/Notre Dame HS
Nick Boyd (FAU) St. Mary's-Rutherford
Jalen Gaffney (FAU), Columbus
There is ALWAYS a Jersey connection.
After hearing Steve Pikiell and Shaheen Holloway talk about the NIT -- and embrace and opportunity and privilege to play more ball -- I will be ripping North Carolina to absolute shreds on the Jersey Jump Shot. Taping now, dropping around lunchtime.
Louisville is a great host city for a regional. Everything's walkable. Well-designed arena. Had an outstanding dinner at Jack's Fry -- good call by
@MarkCannizzaro
. Hope it stays in the rotation.
