Last night I was so tired during a flyout dinner that I said: ‘’I only drink alcohol in the morning”
I meant coffee. 🤦🏼♀️
Most likely not getting the job.
Just shared a few tips about flyouts with one of my students. I thought these could be useful for everyone who's about to give some talks. 🧵Thread👇below.
(Also feel free to add anything you found useful during your experience!)
Remember this map? Remember the recent news about minorities being hit harder by COVID-19?
Well,
@angelo_oh
and I have been putting together a short paper trying to unravel some mechanisms to explain these patterns.

I have two brilliant students on the market working on Spatial Economics, both of them with JMPs that have extremely policy-relevant implications:
1.
@OliviaBordeu
(Chicago Booth)
2.
@GioPietrabissa
(CEMFI)
Something that
@conlon_chris
doesn't know is how many times he's saved my life with his IO and metrics notes.
(Note to myself: don't forget to divide by sqrt(N) if you don't want to get crazy standard errors 🤦♀️)
Ubering back home from my LAST FLYOUT. The feeling is crazy - just thinking that I’ve been preparing for this for years and that it’s over.
A big shout-out to all those JMCs who went through this adventure. You guys are true heroes.
And this is the JM self reward.
And to my amazing boyfriend, who’s put up with all the whining of epic instances such as:
- The code does not work
- I can’t do this
- Everything sucks
But gave me enough wine and love so I never despaired
Job market adventures:
- Lost a 500 USD jacket
- Gained weight
- Went to the wrong hotel and made the person arranging it panic
- Met my econ idols and behaved like a true groupie
- Gained more weight
- Was told by a taxi driver that I’m getting old for having children
Remember that short paper with
@angelo_oh
showing occupations were key to explain differences in COVID-19 exposure across NYC zip codes?
Now we have analyzed how the magnitude of those variables evolve over time under the effects of the stay-at-home order. Thread 👇

How much public transit should cities provide and at what price? The answer depends on how much municipalities can spend.
We explore optimal transit policies and show how road-pricing can cross-subsidize public transit and reduce distortions due to budget constraints

Happy Women's Day!
I want to dedicate this one to my mum. She was a woman always ahead of her time. She never saw me finish my PhD, but if I've had the strength to get here, it's definitely thanks to her.
Together, we became stronger than ever, but still a long way to go!
It's official!!! This Spanish specimen over here has digi-evolved to DOCTOR ALMAGRO!!!
Thanks to the amazing set of people that I've had supporting me throughout: Alessandro Lizzeri, Guillaume Frechette,
@emanresa82
,
@TobiasSalz
,
@straiberman
,
@ptscott
. Couldn't be luckier.
Very very happy to see this out!
It’s been a great process to work with
@EricChyn
and
@BryanAStuart
, even though we come from completely different fields. I’ve learnt so much from them.
Cheers to many more to come!

Our 1st Covid baby has found a home!
Despite it differs from my usual structural work, I’m especially attached to it. It kept me motivated through JM PTSD + pandemic
Deeply grateful to my dearest friend
@angelo_oh
for helping me keeping it together
Reading this gem of a book that
@Simon_Mongey
recommended almost a year ago. I wish it had fallen into my hands during grad school - I guess it’s never too late 😜
I went to bed last night being horrified with certain xenophobic comments on this tweet. Beyond those lives that have been shattered, those comments show a generalized sentiment against immigrants.
The problem is not Trump himself, but how millions of people also think like him
Too many emotions when writing the acknowledgement page on my dissertation. 😭
I don't know if I'm the next Jane Austen with all this sensibility or just the next drama queen.
Some thoughts that I shared during the PhD orientation of
@ChicagoBooth
's new cohort of grad students.
(Much of the credit should go to
@OliviaBordeu
. The free food one is my own harvest though 😜)
Reliable demand estimation is an essential input to many types of research in Industrial Organization and other fields of economics.
This paper presents a discussion of foundational issues:

It’s been a tough year but being reunited with my family is the greatest present I could ever wish for (plus all the jamón ibérico I’m going to eat these days).
Merry Christmas from the Almagro’s sisters!!
How do local price indexes vary differently for the rich and the poor? Higher-income cities and neighborhoods are relatively cheap for the rich, in spite of high unit prices, because chains offering high-quality products are more likely to operate there
When doing structural work, most days of work tend to be frustrating, where I see myself facing a puzzle with very little certainty I'd be able to solve
But today was a good day :)

Flying back to NYC tonight.
Hard to leave all my friends and family behind, but even harder will be to lose the weight that I’ve gained from eating croquetas and jamón.
Let the show begin :)
Good luck to all JMC (friends, strangers, and even me!) tomorrow in your first day of interviews at the EEA meeting. Let's nail those!
Wrapping up some ref report stats:
1. I recommend R&R ~ 52% of the time, ~ 42% conditional on top 5
2. Editor recommends R&R ~ 26% of the time, ~ 14% conditional on top 5
3. Correlation between recommendations is 0.55
Fourth edition of the trade asado.
What an incredible group of people and students!
This time we say goodbye to our beloved
@OliviaBordeu
and
@FrancoTabaresSa
. Wishing you the best in this new stage of your careers!!
Unusual advice for JMCs: have a song that pumps you up and play it before interviews/fly outs.
Mine was Toast by Koffee - Spotify just reminded me.
(ok, I admit that some reggaeton tacky beats too...)
Daruma dolls represent perseverance. Traditionally, one paints one eye, makes a promise, works hard, and paints the other eye when the dream is achieved.
18 months ago I bought this one at the Japanese garden of BAires. I wished for a job. Today I painted its second eye :)
Good piece of advice.
I'd add one more: focus on daily goals, e.g., go over intro, debug this piece of code, etc.
Thinking of long-term goals made me feel that I didn't have enough time and thus made me very anxious. This was a good way of making progress without going nuts
Dear JMC,
I did the market last year, and although things are quite different now, let me give you some very general advice. This is based on my own experience and we are all different, so take it with a grain of salt.

Talking to a Tax Assistant on the phone
TA: where are you from?
Me: Spain
TA: Where?
Me: Ssspain (trying hard to avoid an E before the S)

Me: no, south of France. Can you hear me well?
TA: sorry it’s your accent

You’re not only invaded by trash and rats, but also pretty ugly scaffolding.
American cities need to be more walkable, not less.
Yours truly,
A European fellow and former resident.
Got asked to be a referee (for the first time!) for two different papers this week. In the middle of job-market-craziness-flyout-period.
Did I say no? No, I told them to put them off until March. 🤓
Am I excited? Yes! 😃
Am I a masochist? Maybe 😭
TFW results don't make sense and you spend an entire night wondering if you don't have the right skills for an academic career, but it was just a tiny mistake in your code
Is this common?
I’m putting together a small course on Urban Amenities for the UEA Summer School.
Given it’s impossible to keep track of all new work, please comment below with papers you think I should cover and that students should learn about (shameless self promotion welcome!)
Thanks!!!
PhD students interested in urban economics: Apply to join us in Montreal on May 29-31 for summer school.
Learn from leading scholars, including
@marcogleznav
&
@MilenaAlmagro
. Get feedback on your research and meet other urban economists.
Every time I read ``A Unified Framework for Measuring Preferences for Schools and Neighborhoods'' by
@PatBayerNC
, Fernando Ferreira, and Rob McMillan, I learn something new.
This makes it one of my favorite classical papers in Urban Econ. It's like my Frank Sinatra of sorting.
Given the current JM situation we propose a 2x1 policy to help clearing the market: hire one JMC and get the other one for free 😂
@PeterFPaz
and
@tomasdiino
This is an invaluable opportunity for PhD students working on Urban and Spatial topics, especially for those closer to the market.
Please send your submissions! Looking forward to learning about the new generations in our field :)

Hi,
#EconTwitter
! This is the official Twitter of YES 2020, the conference by grad students, for grad students, which will be (virtually) host by Penn. It's a pleasure to meet you all! :)
It's been a very emotional day and a very nerve-wrecking week (even though I can't vote and probably I'd still be considered as a foreigner in this country to many).
But this video summarizes it all.
Thanks Americans, you made me gain my faith back.

Thank you Europe for such a great summer, filled with nice food, coffee, wine, breakfasts in front of the Mediterranean sea, family, friends...
(and with some coding and referee reports too :/)
Maybe it comes a bit late, but I just did this for one of my friends on the JM.
Not that my communication skills are astonishing, but I hope they're better than my drawing skills.
Strange seminar requests level: ask to stop by a pub before a seminar dinner just because it brings you tons of memories of your masters year in London 🤣
