🧵 If you are a student that wants to be a
#gamedev
please do not just rely on what your school is teaching you. Do your own research, join game dev discords, ask devs that are in the industry on what the industry standards are, watch YouTube tutorials!
Look up what jobs there are and the requirements! Don’t be like me, I graduated in 2021 thinking I’m really good at 3D modeling I will surely get a job. I have been spending the last 2 years teaching myself and using the advice that senior game devs gave me to improve my skills.
On the left is what I thought a game ready Environment looks like, the topology was awful, uvs were all different sizes I didn’t know how to bake anything and the materials are just slapped on. The right is 10 times better and I wish I was at this level when I graduated
@WorkWithIndies
and
@GrunkleGrok
both have amazing discords as well with tons information and resources plz check them out they have helped me a lot personally!!!
@MichaelG_3D
I'll add, if you can pay for one, to do a mentoring with a professional in the game dev. I really changed a lot of my workflow and gave me a boost in my confidence in modeling!
@MichaelG_3D
Wish I would've known this information before getting my degree , I feel like my school screwed me over by rushing through content of game development
@MichaelG_3D
Great advice! In my learning process I've been relying on the help of the local dev community, watching a LOT of dev talks and jamming as much as I could. I also participated short courses and state funded activities. Communities are the heart of gamedev 🖤 Cheers from Argentina!
@MichaelG_3D
Can’t stress this enough, spending time on game dev Discord communities where you share thoughts around different kind of dev knowledge (not just art-wise) has been the most resourceful experience for me. I’ve learned so much by doing that than I would have alone or via a school.
@MichaelG_3D
Hard agree ^^ schools can teach you a lot but interacting with the people in the industry, discords, YouTube (especially from industry vets) are incredibly valuable and often free! Don't overestimate those resources
@MichaelG_3D
Love this! And be able to take a good look at your graduate work and be humble enough to gauge if it's industry comparible/competitive! Graduating isn't the end of learning.
@MichaelG_3D
Definitely agree with this becasue after finishing MA at University months ago, spent the time to polishing my skills and asked for a lot of feedback to improve my work. Managed to land a job now 😄 but thankful to friends, family and fellow artists helping me along this journey.
