👪Happily married father of 3 wonderful children
👶Grandfather to 2 amazing grandchildren
I'd like to introduce you to my new granddaughter. This is Aurora, she was born this morning at 8am. My daughter Anna and her husband Dustin are the proud parents and I'm beyond thrilled to have her join our family.
So Elon is blocking me from sending out weather data on "X". Please check out my Facebook page at "Mike Wankum WCVB" for updated weather information. Don't forget the "WCVB" part of my name. Thanks.
Storm prep New England style. My wife (wonderful woman) let me open my Christmas present early. A brand new pair of
@LLBean
boots. Now I'm ready for the storm.

Interesting weather later this week in Ireland. Powerful Hurricane Lorenzo will weaken and make a run toward the Emerald Isle on Friday. Not as a hurricane but a wind swept rain storm. Cliffs of Moher will be howling.
#wcvb
See any "blue" snow today? White sunlight is a combination colors. Dry snow reflects white light perfectly back to our eyes. Wet snow is denser & absorbs more of the red spectrum. As red is absorbed a blue tint appears. An optical illusion when the snow is wet and dense.

At Fenway tonight with my honey. Odd to see the empty socially distanced seats but great to finally see the Red Sox. (Empty seats yes, but still more fans than an Expo game.)
#wcvb
You may have heard about a possible big snow next Tuesday. 2 days ago the computer models were advertising 54-degrees next Tues, now they want to create an epic snowstorm. Let's give it a few days to see how it develops. I'll keep you posted.

32 years ago a massive nor'easter devastated the coast. At the time we called it the "No-name Storm" or "Halloween Storm". Later Sebastian Junger wrote an excellent book about the storm and it became known as the "Perfect Storm"..
Socially distancing science class on Channel 5 roof as the International Space Station passed over head. 220 miles up doing 17,000 mph. I've seen flyovers since SkyLab and they are always exciting.

Fascinating data from NASA. Over the past several weeks our air has gotten cleaner along the I-95 corridor. Nitrogen Dioxide is an air pollutant created by burning fossil fuel. Since the COVID-19 shutdown there has been less human activity and a 30% reduction in NO-2.
#wcvb
New Euro model continues trend of keeping potential nor'easter off shore. U.S. model (GFS) joining that camp. The chances of a nor'easter this week are pretty slim.

The war on Ukraine is very personal to me. A girl that lived with us one summer while she received medical care in Boston now lives just outside of Kyiv. I think of her as family. I've been chronicling my conversations with Olga on my Facebook Page.🙏
One of the more unusual things I saw from the weekend nor'easter was along the shore roads in Revere. Cars were caked with sand. Usually it's snow and ice. Thanks Don Potito for the pics.

Did you notice? Today's sunset was 1-minute later than yesterday. We have now past the earliest sunsets of the year and the sunsets are getting later...slowly.
#wcvb
Same tree, same week, but much different colors. Fall foliage colors are not as vibrant as last year. Blame it on the summer rain. Foliar fungus thrives on rain/humidity, so lots of fungus this year.Maple leaves appear wilted or brown and drop prematurely.

Monday night right after sunset look to the Southwest. Jupiter and Saturn will be so close together it will look like one bright star, a conjunction. It happens about every 400 years and some think this may have been the origins of the legendary Star of Bethlehem.
#wcvb
I kept seeing wasps on the side of my house all summer. Traced them to my garage ceiling. Busted open the ceiling and found the biggest wasp nest I've ever seen. It's 1 foot by 2 feet at the bottom. But it goes up 4 feet into a crawl space. Nasty little creatures.
I use the building downtown as my own personal

. It's interesting to track the sunsets through the year. Back in early December when we have our earliest sunsets it's to the left of the Pru. Tonight it's way to the right over the Charles River.
#wcvb
The latest trend I'm noticing about the storm next Tuesday is that the secondary storm off shore may develop too far out to sea and not be as strong as originally thought. If that trend holds thru the weekend I would expect snow but not as big as originally thought.
#wcvb
Sunset tonight is 8pm. The next time it will be that late is May 16, 2019. With the heat and humidity lately, winter sounds kind of "refreshing". Agree?
#wcvb
NOAA released its winter outlook this week. Warmer than average temperatures are favored for New England and much of the northern tier states this winter. Not great news for skiers if this hold true. It will be more wet than white.

This crowd will cheer for anything. These are the EMPTY busses that will pick the players up at the end of the parade. A rousing cheer as they passed through.

Sunset over Boston. Did you notice it was at 4:12 today? Yesterday it was 4:11. We've passed through the earliest sunsets of the year. It's now non-stop until those warm summer sunsets.

My grandfather Paul Wankum with his family just before shipping off to fight on the front lines of France and Germany in WWII. I salute all Patriots on this

. His 3 boys including my dad (2nd from left) later served in the military.

How cold is it inside your house? It's almost June and I refuse to turn the heat back on. Down to 64 now. This is going to be a cold night. Can you beat me?
#wcvb
My wife grew up in Tacoma Washington. As a kid she rarely saw snow. This is her sister in law today. 30" of snow. I guess we found where our winter went.
#wcvb
It's roughly a 52-mile path of destruction from Scituate, RI to Weymouth, MA. From 8am-10am 4 confirmed tornadoes and many reports of non-tornado wind damage along with torrential rainfall.
I just got the GFS model run in. It,like the Euro has reduced the snow forecast totals for the storm next Tuesday. We'll see if that trend continues through the weekend. It's looking like the storm may be weaker and too far off shore to have a major impact on us next week.
#wcvb
Happy Father's Day to my dad who I finally got to visit. Because of the pandemic I hadn't been able to see him over a year. Thanks to everyone who got vaccinated and made this possible.
It seems like we have a little more moisture to work with so I have brought the forecast totals up an inch or two. The heaviest will be Monday afternoon through midnight.
#wcvb
Most unusual. Two hurricanes...one city. BOTH Henri and Elsa were Cat 1 hurricanes, BOTH arrived along the New England coast at around noon and BOTH crossed through the same community, Westerly, RI. fortunately neither caused serious damage.
#wcvb
I got this great photo from Jon Moulding. He took it last night on the Cape. Look carefully and you'll see Mars in the upper left near the waning gibbous moon. Moonrise tonight is at 9:27.
#wcvb
We've been together 20 years. From the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the sandy beaches of the Carribean. It's time to say good bye. My trusted sandles have finally given out. Rest well my friends and enjoy the warm tropical breezes. You've earned your keep.
We had 44-seconds more daylight today than yesterday. I hope you used it wisely. By Saturday we're adding a full minute of daylight each day. Can Spring be far behind?
#wcvb
Did you see this cloud this afternoon? It shows up on satellite and stretched all the way from the mid-Atlantic. A very strong upper level wind appears to be the cause. A 140-knot jet is passing overhead this evening.
Beautiful sunset over Scituate while I wait for the pass over of Dragon and the International space station at 8:38. Look northwest toward the Big Dipper.
#wcvb
This is the European model solution of what will happen this weekend. It's the most aggressive for producing snow. The storm is still off the West Coast and a jog of 100-miles either way can have a big impact on snow totals in New England. Stay tuned.
#wcvb
New model data just in. It's indicating too much warm air mixing into the system. It will be hard to support major snowfall in Boston with mild air aloft. Sleet will be heavy put it doesn't pile up as much as snow. W've lowered forecast totals a bit.
#wcvb
I thought yesterday was amazing, today is incredible. We just broke the all time warmest temperature for January in Boston. Since 1872 it has NEVER been this warm in January....ever. wcvb
We are adding almost 3-minutes of daylight to each day. By next Saturday the sunset is at 7pm. The first time since last September it's been that late.
#wcvb
Bad day racing. Half way thru my first race I started loosing power. Limped back to the pits. Sounds like I dropped a valve. Back to the shop for repairs. Bummer.
#wcvb
If you get a chance check out the amazing display of tulips in the Public Garden. Well worth the journey....and maybe our last day with masks outside.
#wcvb
On the family farm in Iowa. This is incredibly cold! Temperature: -3° Wind chill: -26°. And its the middle of the afternoon. Tonight's wind chill will drop to -46°. Surprisingly little snow cover. You can't face the wind for more than a few seconds.
