aaand…. just accepted at Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews! i can hardly believe it.
i am *enormously* grateful to all the reviewers, formal & informal, who’ve helped improved this piece over the past 1.5 yrs. it's so much stronger w/ their comprehensive feedback. THANK YOU!
so i posted this on
@PsyArXiv
a week ago but was too chicken to do a tweeprint until now because, well, it is scary to try to solo-author a theory piece. but, i think it is time to share with you all:
SO EXCITED to have been promoted to associate prof w/ tenure at
@ucicogsci
!!
thank you to all my colleagues, friends, staff members, members of my lab who have been working so hard on their science, collaborators... I could not have done this w/o your support. So very grateful!!
i have been mulling whether/how to say something this since the press releases started coming out 4 days ago, but feel i need to say something now.
i am deeply disappointed in how the media has covered recent findings in consciousness science.

To our
@neuromatch
Academy students & TAs: it’s W1D4 & it’s getting intense! But hang in there! Nobody does a PhD in 3 weeks… absorb, explore, ask questions, save stuff for later. NMA is to build a library for your future, not memorize every book right now ❤️

what is your *favorite* “debate” or controversy in cognitive/computational neuroscience, psychology, machine learning, philosophy, etc right now? who’s “in the ring”? big or small, doesn’t matter, and doesn’t need to be famous; needs to be interesting!

2020 may be over, but this is just the beginning.
@neuromatch
academy has made history, overcome geopolitical barriers, included participants from 60+ countries & regions, made compneuro accessible to 1000s worldwide. I am truly humbled...
Spectacularly happy
@neuromatch
news: we just received an emergency license from the US Government to operate in Iran. Thanks to the community that helped make this happen! ❤️ We can now push further towards the dream of global science without borders.
To my friends and colleagues around the world: Many of you know that I have been working with an incredibly passionate and driven group of people to build and launch
@neuromatch
Academy. (1/10)
WE ARE HIRING! Immediately seeking a lab manager/research assistant (start ~Sept 1, 2023) for several ongoing, externally funded projects. Psychophysics, modeling, fMRI, real-time fMRI, and metacognition/consciousness! . Please share widely!!
missing the

pride! so proud of all the students, TAs, mentors, staff, and volunteers! here's to a successful FOURTH YEAR of computational neuroscience and beyond! 🥂✌️🥳🎊🎉🙌🤗
As Week 1 of
@neuromatch
Academy wraps up, some thoughts:
- breathe, sleep, eat, code — in that order!
- look back to 1 week ago: how much more do you know now?!
- *I’m* learning a ton, too!
- Open Science, Philosophy, & Science Visualization tomorrow/Sunday!

feeling grateful today for my mentors, professional friends & colleagues, & admin staff who've helped me curate my professional trajectory. tenure file submission imminent in the coming days.
apprehensive, but so appreciative of your support over the past 15+ yrs. thank you all.
at risk of tooting my own horn, here is a soundbite of me talking about how
@neuromatch
Academy is going beyond passively delivered MOOCs to deliver interactive, "high touch" computational neuroscience education no matter your location.
@neuromatch
is science without borders ❤
it's a wrap!
@neuromatch
academy 2022 students & TAs are now part of our global community that endures indefinitely! if you're going to
@CogCompNeuro
or
@SfNtweets
this year, i hope i'll see you there! come say hi, & add "neuromatch" to your name tag so we can find each other 😊
At
@neuromatch

@jslbutler

if i ever publish (or preprint) a paper that doesn't cite your relevant work, please tell me! if i can fix it i absolutely will, or will fix in next pub. the literature is big, hard to keep up. guaranteed we'll all miss smth relevant sometime.
let's normalize communication😊

is 50% done! whaaaat? Flew by in a flash.
So impressed by all the students' & TAs’ energy, enthusiasm — just so mindblowing. And by our generous mentors, for giving time to projects & one-on-one sessions!
Are your brains full yet? Don’t give up! You got this!
very excited to announce that i am *officially* moving to
@UCIrvine
Cognitive Sciences, effective March 2020. UCR has been and is an exciting, vibrant, brilliant community & i have learned so much from being here; will miss my fantastic colleagues, but now off to a new adventure!
conference travel, seeing good science friends, talking into the wee hours about uber-nerdy things always re-invigorates me. this is how we should always feel as scientists, but it's so easy to settle into a routine & get bogged down in minutae. feeling energized to write, think.
did you just get accepted to

very saddened to hear of Dan Dennett's passing. he was a transformative influence on my thinking about a great many topics, and a kind and generous man. his presence will be missed dearly by a great many people.

yes, viewing distance, chinrest/eyetracker etc is all wrong & will need to move elsewhere for light control... but wanted to make sure i nabbed all the pieces from lab by plugging everything in.
still kind of love it tho.
#NeuromatchAcademy
students & TAs, you’re almost near the end, can you believe it? Enjoy these last few days, & remember that your projects are so great even if you “didn’t find anything”.
& just like in those Reflections, look back to 2.5 weeks ago & think how far you've come!
okay folks.
@nytimes
didn't want it (well, they ghosted me, unsurprisingly) & i'm frankly not wanting to wait for other outlets to take weeks to deliberate. so.

But wait there’s more! Big shout-out to two other groups: the teams behind

These groups are leaders in fostering more inclusive learning environments and for that kudos to everyone involved!

as “AI” achieves ever-higher capacities, we have serious questions: is current AI conscious? how would we know? what if we're wrong, in either direction? attributing C to a non-conscious system has societal implications, but reverse may be morally worse.

great news from my dept: no GRE required! home testing does not level the playing field--unequal access to quiet environment (for 4 straight hours), unstable internet etc make home GRE an inequitable solution. plus concerns re: equity of standardized tests in general. strong win.
No GRE? No problem! In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UC Irvine Department of Cognitive Sciences is waiving the GRE requirement for the upcoming graduate application cycle.
HUGE congratulations to my trainee, Sana Hussain, who today earned her PhD & became DOCTOR SANA HUSSAIN!🎉🎉🎉

stats is hard for many. i also used to find stats hard. so here's another tools to add to our repertoire, to help build our students' intuitive understanding.
lots of authoritative, but incorrect, statements here: conflation of C1 and C2, agency, phenomenology vs self-awareness, and "threat" capacity with "capacity for phenomenal experience"

The Path to Conscious AI
The single biggest question of our times is, will sustained innovation on LLMs inevitably lead to AI consciousness? While GPT-4 is clearly not self-aware or sentient, we don't know how GPT-6 or 7 will behave.
If AI ever becomes conscious, it will have

i am dismayed by the way the press have portrayed IIT and GNWT as the only 2 theories of C out there. the purpose of TWCF's Accelerating Research on Consciousness grant mechanism is to *collectively* make progress on arbitrating theories of C-science, 2 or 3 theories at a time.
