His reputation as an intellectual on nuclear policy was based on showmanship rather than substance: nuclear wonks like Henry “Strangelove” Kissinger and Herman Kahn justified the Cold War nuclear build-up that led to 317 nuclear tests across Oceania.

Headline in The Age newspaper: “Macron’s supreme arrogance to blame for Noumea riots”. It’s by French journalist Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, republished from the Daily Telegraph in London. The original headline was: “Macron’s supreme arrogance is now tearing apart the French empire.”

Not so much beautiful, as a striking reminder that colonial powers seized territories across the islands region. The tragedy is that a 2023 map still has (French), (US), (UK) etc scrawled across it, and that colonialism continues to divide our sea of islands.

Dancers welcome President Emmanuel Macron to a village near Touho, asvlocals raise concern over coastal erosion and climate change. Notable that the dancers’ backs are daubed KNKY - the shorthand for Kanaky - and wear a headdress with the flag of Kanaky, symbol of independence!

Successive French governments and “loyalist” leaders in #NewCaledonia have long hoped a younger generation of Kanak would give up their elders’ quest for an independent and sovereign state. The current polarisation in Noumea shows how wrong this is - decolonisation is incomplete.
