Every time I see Virat Kohli visibly, and proudly, gush over his wife and family, it reminds me of how much of a departure he is from male public figures in India. And how unintentionally perhaps, he is showing people a new way to be a "cool guy" - a good cricketer & a good man.
Just one thing: The misogynist reaction to Rihanna's tweet where she's being mocked for her abusive relationship with Chris Brown is just another reiteration of what feminists in India have been pointing out for a while — the intersection of women-hating & right-wing ideology.
Did the mistake of watching "Tu Jhooti Main Makkar," and aside from the curious case of Ranbir Kapoor's dead eyes (he's usually so good otherwise!), my perennial question with every Luv Ranjan film remains — has he, or any writer he works with, actually met a human woman?
Would just like to reiterate how absolutely ridiculous it is that people are STILL forced to use Twitter as an SOS for a public health emergency that's been on for more than 10 days.
What's the point of a govt? Why do we have a Prime Minister? Are we a country or a PR firm?
A Bombay moment: Watched the extraordinary Naseerudin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah in Florian Zeller's "The Father" at Prithvi theatre last night. Riveting, and brilliant. (Photo from standing ovation after the play ended.)
Firstly, it's alopecia. Acacia is a plant.
Secondly, why is the Honourable Justice calling someone with alopecia "ugly"?
Thirdly, and most importantly, why are courts ruling on what young women can and can't wear?
Justice Dixit : Even if a girl from another religion, who is suffering from acacia, and wears a headdres to cover her ugliness, will she be permitted.

The Zomato ad with Kachra from "Lagaan" is unacceptable in its ignorance. To use a Dalit character and show him as a stand-in for furniture (!) in a country where as recently as 2022 a Dalit child was killed for drinking water from a pot meant for upper-castes, is just egregious.
Whomst would have thought that two Dilli ke launde - with all their sometimes accurate stereotypes - would show India vulnerable, and emotional models of masculinities to emulate? SRK, and Virat Kohli know what's up. Shoutout to the bwoys.

You know, let's talk about this. Last time I visited the National Museum was in March, right before the lockdown. And it was anything but in shambles; there were visitors, including school kids.
But if dust annoys you, might I suggest dusting & not demolishing the whole thing?
Everybody is trying to sound so wise on National Museum. Ask them when was the last time they visited the place.
It's in a shambles. The display halls are dusty. The gift shop stocks Janpath garbage. There is no parking space. It is a national shame in its current state.
Do those asking for a boycott of Kareena Kapoor Khan because she might be playing Sita in a Ramayana adaptation know that the screenplay for BR Chopra's iconic "Mahabharata" was written by Rahi Masoom Raza? Just asking. Might be a good reminder to them of what India is. (Still.)

Very late but - saw "Promising Young Woman" and I don't think I've seen the rage of being a woman translated so perfectly on screen in a film before. The Bo Burnham "nice guy" reveal, the reference to Greek mythology by naming the protagonist Cassandra...just perfectly done.
Don't understand why people are saying "oh elections hai na" as something that dilutes the farmers' victory. That's how democracy works.

I don't know, dude, if anecdotally almost everyone you know has lost a loved one because of the incompetence of a government which didn't do the bare minimum of doing its *job,* the only acceptable prism *will* be negative.
Why is it that the only acceptable prism through which we can view India is a negative one? Why is India ALWAYS a sum total ONLY of its problems? Why do we only believe the worst about this country?
This behavior is fascinating. I've not seen it any where else.
I'd never thought I'd see a day when reporters grill an innocent delivery boy over an alleged murder with more ferocity, logic and persistence than they would our politicians who need to be held accountable for a severe public health crisis, but, here we are.

In India, we only believe a woman has been raped when she's dead. Otherwise, we force her to disappear after a public confession, arrest her for extortion and put her in jail for two months.
Justice? Yeh toh naam kabhi suna hi nahin.
I'm hearing that men's rights activists have decided to take a stand against criminalising marital rape by going on something called *checks notes* a marriage strike?
Never not amused by the ridiculousness of their arguments, ngl.
There was a slight promise of nuance and complexity when the woman says she wants her own life and freedom and doesn't think it should be a choice between that and family for her or the man. And then, all that went out of the window at the end. Writing as subtle as a hammer.
Tiny bit of good news: Nearly a month after COVID hit home, all of us (Mom, Dad and I) have finally tested negative. Feeling immense gratitude to doctors, friends who helped with meds and words of support, and all those who wished us well.

Every time I see a woman — younger or older than me — living their life unapologetically, it fills me with a gladness. So much of our choices are dictated by "should," that to see women instead choosing "want" is a cause for celebration, I think.
A word on the Wire-Meta saga — it has exposed, in a terrible way, a tendency for conversation on Twitter to become about "taking sides" and foregoing nuance. Are there legitimate doubts on The Wire's story? Yes. Does Meta still have to clarify why a post was taken down? Also, yes
Maybe I should tweet about one good film for every um, film like this — Kathal on Netflix is funny, lovely, and unafraid to at least acknowledge caste which in itself is a big one for Hindi films. Some great writing that left me with a smile on my face. :)
Any time you saw a photograph that defined the turmoil of contemporary India, chances are that it would be taken by Danish. He was one of our best. Terrible, terrible loss.
I don't want to blame the women near the scanners or the guards who are just doing their jobs.
What I do want to ask is this — why obfuscate the choice for passengers to opt for Digiyatra, especially when biometric information which needs informed consent is at stake? (4/4)
Increasingly I am realising that, like most things, intellectual pursuit is a privilege. Defined by caste, class, and of course, gender. Any profile of an intellectual misses the margins - who or what gave him (and it's mostly him) the privilege to read, write, and research?
I crosschecked this with the video where he says, "I would like to take a neutral perspective." Which is a good reminder as any that objectivity is irrelevant in the context of irrefutable morality. Highlighting Hitler is not edgy, it's immoral...because killing people is wrong.
That the ad went through creative directors, marketing teams, and agencies without raising an alarm speaks to how there is a blind spot when it comes to a socio-cultural understanding of what India is beyond just viral campaigns. We simply need to do better.
Hindi film songs are not "product trials" but are crucial to a very Indian filmmaking language, and trace their origins to Parsi theatre — but who needs such "surface level" cultural studies & historical context when we can apparently just use product language...for everything.
With the "Pathaan" release, let me tell you how songs help Bollywood in the distribution of its movies. And move the needle of their level of hit or flop 🧩
Plus, how it can be intertwined with your product 📲
To be fair, I would have bought the unrealistic portrayal of wealth and privilege if it was offset by good writing - but the stilted screenplay and dialogues *were* the reason in the first place why I was wondering about where Anjana's gorgeous flat was anyway.

Free or subsidised public transport has always been crucial to a woman's ability to access the city on her own terms whether for work or leisure across classes. Those who can't understand this are usually folks for whom this barrier doesn't exist — mostly because of gender.

Re. Utsav and his recent tweets. No one is denying him the right to put forth his point of view. But he posted consensual sexts by a woman who did NOT publicly accuse him. (For what purpose, no one knows.)
That's not justice, that's vengeance. Cheered on by an online mob.
An infuriating, and heartbreaking account. But all too common, especially if you're a young woman just starting out, and afraid of being seen as "unlikable" or "troublesome."
Forget all that. Take credit for the work you've done. Demand better. Assert yourselves.

Saw EEAO in a theatre & was struck by its almost-Hindi-film-like emotional core which gives the wacky & innovative multiverse concept its heart. Sure, multiverse jumping is cool. But a mother saying that she chooses her daughter in every universe? Salim-Javed would be proud.
Not sharing that heartbreaking video of a child trying to wake his mother, who'd died from hunger and dehydration at the Muzaffarnagar station in Bihar. Watching the video made me want to run away from the Internet. But it's also a reminder why we mustn't. Why we can't. (1/2)
Saw PS-1 and despite having no context to the story, I was engrossed in the film. Goes on to show what good old fashioned storytelling with good writing, gorgeous cinematography, and a solid cast can do. Also, Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai combo is always one to watch.
Utterly ridiculous how Kusha Kapila is trending on Twitter after announcing her divorce. Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I think meme culture has ruined the frame of reference of how we respond to things on the Internet — with a skew towards unkindness more often than not.

This friend, one of my closest friends in the world, the kindest person I know, who'd been battling cancer for years, passed away today afternoon. I learnt that he'd got COVID in the end. All he wanted, he kept saying, was the damn vaccine. I don't know what to say, or do.
A close friend, who's my age, is a cancer patient. He has been waiting for the vaccine ever since vaccination started. He's suffering from complications which make hospital visits compulsory & is stressed about COVID. Govt's approach on vaccinations is baffling. And infuriating.
Not sharing the notice being circulated against

Calling workers "partners" is not a free pass for exploitation is a lesson that some Indian startups need to learn clearly. (Zomato, Swiggy, and now Urban Company.)
My colleague,

You know what? I'm done with people dissing museums in India, without ever having made the effort of knowing what's happening.

Also, do you know why National Museum being demolished is a travesty. Maybe you should stand in the inner courtyard of the museum, which is a design marvel. Open spaces, blue sky, and a museum which was established when India was a young, but ambitious country.
Dilip Kumar was born Mohammed Yusuf Khan in Peshawar (now Pakistan) in 1922. His first film "Jwar Bhata" (1944) predated the existence of India and Pakistan. His life — and the love he got — spans this subcontinent's history, minus the borders. This truly is the end of an era.

This Monday, I am thinking of these lines by Bill Watterson - who knows a thing or two about creating things for creative fulfilment, of course.
"To invent your own life's meaning is not easy, but it's still allowed, and I think you'll be happier for the trouble."
I noticed the screen on the scanner machine asking for biometrics and said, "No, I don't want Digiyatra. I just want to enter." The woman mumbled "Nahin kar sakte." I still walked, only to be stopped by a guard before the line saying "Wahaan scan karvaya?" (2/n)
