anyone have questions about the COVID vaccines?
I don't pretend to have all the answers but happy to address what I can and look up stuff myself as needed and try to answer any questions people have
@monicamonroe
we don't know yet, hopefully not!
we might see some sort of antigenic drift like with flu but it's too soon to tell
this may be part of the reason so many experts recommend continued mitigation (masks, distancing, etc) until vaccine is fully distributed-- really quash it
@MDaware
Is the Oxford vaccine safe? Some virologists who have studied adenoviruses are concerned regarding the pathogenicity of adenovirus vector. They opine that the cases of transverse myelitis are LIKELY due to the vaccine. Can I have your thoughts/opinions?Is there a definite risk?
@cogsci_guy
seems like it. from what I've seen even the guidance on people with acute covid is to wait so staff & others dont get exposed, not to protect the person with covid
@MDaware
Yes, any word on the promised mutations? Do I get to choose from a list or are they random? And if the former, how hot will my laser vision be?
@bcbiochemist
I appreciate your joke (I'm going with vampirism) but really, mRNA cannot mutate your DNA. the whole thing is later on in the process, it doesnt even go into your nucleus
terrible analogy: using the wrong octane gas doesnt change whether you have a chrysler or honda
@MDaware
What do we know (and not) about how likely you are to transmit asymptomatically after being vaccinated? How soon will we have studies to know more?
@khgeissler
AFAIK we just dont know yet. hopeful that it decreases transmission too but my guess is it will take a while to know more, esp since prevalence is so high now
this is why so many experts recommend continued mitigation (masks, distancing, etc) until vaccination is widespread
@MDaware
I am scheduled for my 2d Shingles vaccine in a couple weeks. Does that interfere w/ a Covid vaccine I’ll likely get sometime afterward? If so, is there an amount of time I need to separate the two different shots? My docs have no idea.
@Violetskyye
AFAICT the main reason we ask not to get 2 different vaccines near each other is so if you have a reaction we know more about which it is, so recs are generally to space a few weeks
@jlou_2
my understanding is the only people being warned to hold off for now are those with prior anaphylaxis to vaccines, not general anaphylaxis
I saw there are 13 reports of anaphylaxis and something over a million doses so far, which is a pretty low rate
@cogsci_guy
seems like it. from what I've seen even the guidance on people with acute covid is to wait so staff & others dont get exposed, not to protect the person with covid
@MDaware
What do we know from other two-dose vaccines about what happens if you skip the second dose? And is there reason to think the same will happen with these?
