56 years ago today. Seiji Ozawa and the Chicago Symphony was there. Mayor Daley was there. Thousands of delighted, confused, even angry spectators were there. I was there, with the family Kodak 8mm camera, pint-sized witness to history, the unveiling of Chicago's Picasso.

Only the elderly remember this, but we used to actually bring glass empties back to the supermarket without destroying our lives or compromising our freedom. Empties were picked up by bottlers and recycled. Billions of tons of non-biodegradable plastic never came into existence.

So the whitewashing of NASCAR begins in earnest. "Double the visitors on Monday" sounds really great, until you read on to the fact attendance on the usually busy Saturday and Sunday was: 0! Because they were closed. Because of NASCAR.
