In the news conference today, Shandro questioned Health Canada's decision to approve AstraZ for those aged 65+. I'm not sure why he thinks he knows better than Health Canada. I also don't think we need the Minister of Health fueling vaccine hesitancy.

@Lorian_H If he's concerned doesn't he have the power to restrict for Albertans who are 65 plus? I have some worries about this and I NEVER agree with Shandro!!

@HughesFull He could allocate other vaccines to that population. To me, the problem is that so many Albertans are hesitant about vaccines and he needs to be very clear in what he says about them.

@Lorian_H Just listened to the Chief Mwdical Officer of Canada explain the reasoning. Being someone over 65 yrs. I would be happy to take that vaccine. Zero deaths, zero serious illness in all trial persons. AstraZeneca vs. No vaccine makes the decision easy.

@FatFarmGma The Chief Medical Officer of Canada is a much better source for health information than Shandro :)

@SusanRuddick1 Yes, I'm sure this is the source of his comment. I'm just not sure why he would opine given his lack of expertise on the issue. The gov needs to be careful around vaccine messaging.

@Lorian_H I asked the same question when I heard it was approved this morning. It’s a fair question and my 80 yr old mil prefers to get the ones with better coverage. I also prefer to get the ones with 80-90% coverage.

@mamaBetty3 I think it is fine for individuals to weigh their options and to seek information from health professionals. The problem is the Minister of Health saying anything to question Health Canada's approval decisions, given Alberta's already high levels of vaccine hesitancy.

@Lorian_H The only reason they mention the over 65’s is because this group was not relevant to the clinical trial. Real world experience in the UK says that this vaccine is effective for the plus 65 group.

@nivende2 Oh, definitely. The problem was that he gave no context whatsoever. He merely said that he was surprised by Health Canada's decision. I am uneasy with the Minister of Health being on the record as questioning Health Canada's drug approvals without giving the relevant context.

@Lorian_H Isn't that the vaccine company Kenney was going to approach to bypass the Feds and buy our own supply?

@Lorian_H Call Macron + Merkel & scold them for creating “vaccine hesitancy”. If only Trudeau’s whole political career wasn’t riding on vaccine delivery. He is so desperate, he is taking the only supply COVAX could offer, AstraZ. Maybe more “experts” should question Health Canada.

@Lorian_H Not a fan of @shandro but AstraZ doesn’t have enough data to show its effectiveness for 65+.Why is AstraZ so available? Because many counties have rejected it for 65+ and some like CH & SA rejected it for everyone. Efficacy is low compared to Pfizer and Moderna. More data needed

@MsVAlberta @shandro We should definitely ask ?s. The problem was that his comment completely lacked context and could be interpreted in concerning ways (e.g. as suggesting there are safety issues with covid vax). There are so many vax hesitant in AB that he needs to choose words carefully.
