Professor of Government at the University of Hull. Dedicated to study of Parliament, comparative legislatures, the constitution, and the Conservative Party.
The very fact that some parents are so ill-informed as to believe children may become gay by being told about gay relationships is a demonstration in itself that parents do not know best. Educating children is not the problem. Educating the parents is the real challenge.
Dissolution not in gift of PM. Under Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act, power of dissolution has reverted to being a personal prerogative power. PM can recommend, but not advise, a general election. One of three prerogative powers not exercised on advice.
I joined the University of Hull in 1977 and was appointed as Professor of Government in 1986, which means I have now spent more than half my life in the post!

Really chuffed that in the past few days, 'Governing Britain' - being released on 17 September - has shot up the Amazon best seller list in terms of British politics books...
The Queen calling an election is not an unlikely scenario. It is an impossible one. The Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 removed the sovereign's power to dissolve Parliament.
Receiving what I believe is known now as a 'shout out' in the Commons from both the Universities minister and the Speaker. Put another way, both kindly made reference to me...
It gets worse.... 'The Times' published my letter explaining how a report they carried got wrong the provisions of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act. The letter was edited in such a way as to misrepresent the provisions of the Act! Another letter is on its way....
Gave the Speaker's Lecture tonight on 'What if Edward Heath had resigned in October 1974 and William Whitelaw had become Conservative leader?' Should be broadcast on BBC Parliament on Saturday.
I occasionally get people asking me to sign one of my books, but I wasn't expecting the level of interest, and the queuing for me to sign copies, at Tuesday's launch of 'The 1922 Committee: Power Behind the Scenes'.
The book is due for release on Tuesday, but I understand that it has sold so well that it is already having to be reprinted. Book launch in Westminster on 17 October and on

Some commentators appear to believe the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill became an Act earlier when Nigel Evans announced royal assent in the Commons. It became an Act shortly after 6.00 p.m. when the Lord Speaker announced royal assent in the Lords.
Delighted to know that copies of the book have started to arrive on people's doormats. The first print run sold out pre-publication and, to judge by the Amazon rankings, it looks as if it sales continue apace. The formal launch is on Tuesday.
