OrionRank 2022 Mid-Year/Halfway: 50-1.
@EazyFreezie
created the graphic and has refined the algorithm. So far, things are a bit different from last year - but there's plenty of majors ahead this year to change things. Congrats to the Top 150!
Regardless of what happens from here, MuteAce has beaten the top ranked players in Japan (acola,) Europe (Glutonny,) The USA (Light,) and MKLeo (Mexico) at GENESIS 9, per OrionRank '22. Historic run
Top 8 composition at BoBC 4;
Gluto 🇫🇷 vs Tea 🇯🇵
Shuton 🇯🇵 vs KEN 🇯🇵
and
Ouch!? 🇨🇦vs Kome 🇯🇵
Riddles 🇨🇦vs Sisqui 🇪🇸
First NA major in Smash history with no US/MX players.
We need to force a PR response from Nintendo. Worked with EVO 2013, hopefully it can work again; the fact some players are already in the USA for the cup makes Nintendo's actions especially petty. This directly personally affects tons of people
Every Fighters Pass 1 & 2 character has won a set in the Top 8 of a major. Additionally, every main or co-main of a FP1/FP2 character has at least made it to the Top 4 of a major.
Except Banjo
On the subject of
#UnBanNairo
Nairo will no longer be omitted from future OrionRank submissions, nor will he be tagged as a "banned" player on TTS sheets. I have removed his "Banned" tag from the Orionrank 2015 sheet.
Some examples of individual damages done: Many players spent a lot of money to travel widely during the year. Given no resistance to the SWT early on, it seemed as though this was a safe bet and they wouldn't can it last minute. This screws over a lot of people.
Fun times: a comparison between Ultimate's early meta and Smash 4's early meta. (re my meta report)
The difference in character balance is pretty staggering. Diddy Kong comprised more than 27% of results during his pre-nerf reign of terror in 4.
Zackray casually put up one of the best ever Pit runs in any Smash game. By far the best in Ultimate history - hard to say why he's going for it, but he got 3rd at Kagaribi 9 with solo Pit. Wins over Kameme, Yoshidora, Umeki, KEN, Rizeasu, & Eim.
Smash Ultimate has more character diversity in the last 7-8 months than Smash 4 had in two years. Major list included (super-regional list is too long to screencap for either title), major definitions based on database I ran for Sm4sh and the OrionStats TTS.
Zackray has now won back-to-back majors. Despite an 8 month gap, his last major (and non-weekly) was actually Kagaribi 6. With Ultimate WANTED 4, he has now won three non-Invitational majors in a row!
Did a quick analysis of the h2h stuff here from the last year, Category 3+ or higher events. Worth noting Jordan does have 2 Lima (62nd) wins at a regional
As a viewer one thing I do think is unfortunate about GENESIS X: Zackray didn't get streamtime in Top 64. Dabuz/Zackray, Zackray/Miya, Zackray/Sonix, and Zackray/Neo were all offstream despite all being pretty good sets.
It's been a while since I've done a peak results post. While I'm working on the larger tier list project, I'll throw another one out. Going by the OrionStats TTS, here are single character peaks from March last year to March this year.
Characters statistics from 251 power rankings across 5 continents, dozens of countries, and over 3000 players. First, here is a shorthand of percentage stats of characters used worldwide among ranked players, as up to date as possible.
2022's fifth supermajor is wrapped up. Fun fact: Each one has been won by a different player.
Genesis 8: MKLeo
Kagaribi

MomoCon 2022: Light
Pound 2022: Glutonny
Collision 2022: Spargo
OrionRank 2019 Day 4 and the revealing of
#25
-
#1
is here. I'll be splitting this into three tweets. Here, we have the full algorithmic ranking for 2019.
Some key takeaways from Smash Con 2023;
-Dabuz has bounced back since Kagaribi, now adding 2 Miya wins to his collection.
-Acola has extended his consistency lead over the competition.
-Zomba is an underrated top 10 contender
-Miya now has positive set records on 2 top NA
In addition, here is a shorthand image of the OrionRank Top 100 made by
@MattyDarkDN
. The IntheLoop article has details, but here's the base image covering the whole top 100!
First supermajor won by ProtoBanham in North America, third supermajor won by Japan in Ultimate, with the last being Zackray's win at TBH9. Another huge, historic event across the board!
Today, Big D made Winners Quarters of a supermajor going all Ice Climbers, defeating Light, Riddles, Jakal, and Tweek. His sole loss - Shuton - is active in JP Wifi, where Ice Climbers have top 10 results. They fight again tomorrow!
Average placements (weighted) among top 5 mains of each character. This took a while, but this shows how well characters do the more player results you count for each character! Some characters are backed heavily by one main, others do very well even with all five mains.
Akakikusu is in top 24 despite needing to use an English menu. Just beat Dabuz 3-0, only loss so far was to Sonix. He had some close shaves against Longo and Colorondo8 but this is a successful international debut despite the language barrier w/ Hero menu.
HIKARU's run at UFA is unexpected for a number of reasons, but the biggest is that he's gone DK the vast majority of games, making this a bonafide Donkey Kong major run to top 3 at minimum of a major. First time this has happened since Smash 4
8 out of the top 10 attended SSC 2023. So far:
Shuton (lost to AndresFn)
Riddles (llost to Acola)
Light (lost to Marss)
Tweek (lost to Neo)
Sonix (25th, IcyMist/DDee)
Miya (ilost to Dabuz)
Sparg0 (49th, Ly/Aaron)
Acola (In winners side top 8)
Two last things on Steve until I drop a Steve paper;
1: Antagonism and mockery of Steve mains will result in a ban movement failing because it will create a loud, vocal resistance and make the movement appear petty/personal.
Kameme has placed top 8 at JP majors this year with Sora, but Sora is usually just a component mixed with Sheik/Mega Man. At Glitch Regen, Kameme has made top 8 with what appears to be solo Sora - a first since Zackray's one-time run with the character in late 2021.
Zackray goes from sweeping UW4 to placing 49th (!!!) at Maesuma TOP 10, losing to Kuroponzu (ROB) (1-3) in pools and shori (Wolf) (2-3) in losers. Crazy event so far!
Battle of BC 4 Seeding! I wasn't involved, but I haven't seen typical image seeding posts around so I thought I'd post it. Credit to
@battleofbc
and their seeders;
Worth noting that this is likely one of many consequences of the FTX debacle since TSM also is dipping from Rainbow Six. Really sad but not unexpected w/ esports in the spot it is ☹️
Today we part ways with
@TweekSSB
We can't thank you enough for everything you've done these past 3 years. A champion, a fighter, the embodiment of what it means to don the black-and-white.
You're a TSM legend and we wish you the best in your future. Keep tearing it up, Tweek.
Here is the Hidden Boss list as it has been constructed so far; features players from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Europe, Oceania, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
With BoBC5 maintaining Premier Tier status, we have probably the highest stakes WQs sets so far this year;
Acola 🇯🇵 vs Sisqui 🇪🇸
Zomba 🇺🇸vs Miya 🇯🇵
Sparg0 🇲🇽vs Armadillo 🇨🇦
Maister 🇲🇽vs Glutonny 🇫🇷
Very international winners side!
Zomba DOES IT! After a lot of close calls post-quarantine, he has won his first major event at Crown III (S-Tier), with wins over Sonix, MkLeo, Tweek, Shuton, & Jakal.
Also worth noting: This was a pretty good event for Europe. Probably their best to date at an S/P tier, despite lacking their arguable
#1
in Bloom4Eva.
Top 24:
Sisqui 🇪🇸
Glutonny 🇫🇷
Tarik 🇩🇪
25th:
Luugi 🇬🇧
AndresFn 🇪🇸
33rd:
Dmitrii 🇮🇪
quiK 🇩🇪
65th:
Mr. R 🇳🇱
Acola's unprecedented rise peaks with back-to-back major wins at Maesuma TOP 7 and Kagaribi 7; the former is a major (A-Tier) while the latter is a supermajor (S-Tier.) He is one of the youngest major winners of all time after dominating the Smashmate bracket in historic fashion.
Doramigi, a 14 year old Min Min who has defeated Mr. R and Cosmos this last month, adds Dabuz to his wins; he defeated Dabuz 2-1 in pools at Maesuma TOP 12. Really crazy event; Cosmos, Riddles, and Scend are the only international players to make it out in winners so far.
I regret to inform the public that Miya now has contributed a minimum of 2.5 points to the Mii Swordfighter score using the worst loadout ive ever seen. Actually no this rules
Character usage on recent power rankings, aggregated from an abridged list of 107 PRs spanning most notable regions. Source data will be released later, but this is what things look like in terms of pickrates region-to-region right now;
This screws over Australian players who are currently in the USA for Mainstage and staying for SWT. This screws over players like Yoshidora who could only set aside time for SWT because he otherwise has a wife & job and rarely attends OOR even in Japan.
Mainstage has been a complete trainwreck for top seeds; 5/8 (Light, Kola, Riddles, Tea, Shuton) all in losers; Riddles out, KEN/Tea for 33rd. Other high seeds like Zomba, Gackt, and KEN were all upset. Winner of KEN/Tea fights Zomba, generally just a mess right now lol
Side note but the top 4 in the world are the two best NA wifi and 2 best JP wifi players during the Quarantine Era. No matter how you shuffle it up, dominating online was a clear indicator of success. Same applies to Bloom w/ EU.
Next step in the meta balance paper; Averaging the success of characters when the average performances of their five best players! This is 2021-June 2023. Not all players per character are final, I have a good number of alternates I'll check to make sure I'm getting the best 5.
No shade towards Sonix! This tweet mostly is regarding comments in the thread. Two things;
-This did not include LMBM.
-This was an algorithm, not a panel vote. The idea that me or my colleagues would rank Sonix purposefully low because he mained Sonic is absurd.
Little Mac player bt.yamato has returned to Ultimate; was known for one of Mac's best achievements in Smash 4 where he beat Sinji, Falln, 8BitMan, and AC to place 5th in 2018 at SoCal Regionals. Today he got 4th at HEROES
#2
, a B-Tier equivalent
Not currently producing a piece on this subject, but I think MKLeo is probably the best post-Melee player of all time. He gives off serious Mango vibes being able to dominate in wildly different eras.
Raarchyor, Morocco's best player who has resided in France for a while - wins Cora Smash Cup with Sora, beating Glutonny twice, Leon, Ogey, and Raflow.
Kaninabe 3-2 MkLeo and KEN 3-2 Sparg0 within twenty seconds of each other. Huge, huge upsets; KEN winning his first set vs. Sparg0 after three game 5 losses and Kaninabe continuing a cinderella run.
With that, Acola is (probably)
#1
worldwide right now. Biggest marks against him: Losing records to Sparg0/MuteAce. Sparg0's 13th at Summit gives him a big valley Acola lacks, though. There's 3 months ahead though.
OrionStats character update for July! Steve starts Phase 6 off with a clean lead, while Snake re-emerges in the top 3 and Min Min accelerates to near-top 10 status. G&W has also had a very good month, with Miya, Maister, & regional data boosting the character.
So - here we are! Notable Feats, Event Wins Only, and National & Regional Scores for the characters from December 7th-December 31st. Most of the cast appears somewhat viable, but a few top contenders have emerged.
In more Smash history; Doramigi, a 13-14 year old Min Min player who has beaten a host of good players before (including Acola, Dabuz, & Cosmos) is sitting in winners finals of MaesumaTOP
#13
. If he wins it, he'll be the youngest major winner of all time, if I'm not mistaken.
