I told partner that doctors would agree to perform a lobotomy/hysterectomy on a woman at her husband's request without her consent until about mid last century. He didn't believe me, looked it up, then couldn't believe he hadn't heard about that.
I just told my husb that women couldn't even get a credit card w/o a male signature until 1974, and he was incredulous. I think a lot of people don't realize that the deep misogyny of this country is so close that it's not even in the rear view mirror. It's here. It never left.

It’s so important for people with social power to recognize that them/ us not knowing things is deliberate on the system’s part, and often on the part of their own choice or filters.

Cary Grant came home from school one day and his mother was gone
His father had had her committed - he had found another woman
Cary found her once he was an adult in his 30’s but she was of course never the same after horrid treatment

Men used to have complete control over their wives and all their property from they time they married. Some would get tired of them and have them put in institutions.

Doctors also often used to give serious diagnoses to a woman's husband rather than to her. And sometimes her husband just never told her. Who knows how many women died without ever knowing they were sick

Conversely many doctors won't perform a hysterectomy on a woman if she is young enough to still have children or if they talk to a husband too.
