Hey Canada, let's try something new. Let's elect NO white men to public office for five years and see what happens. Just five years. Then we can open it up again. Who's in?

It might be possible that a person with white male privilege, who never faced any of the official/unofficial, written/unwritten barriers to succeeding (systemic discrimination) that many people *do* face in Canada is *not* actually qualified to recognize the changes needed today.
This started as an angry, frustrated shout in the void, but, when it started to resonate with people, I wondered how long it would take before someone replied with the equivalent of "not all white men."
Longer than I feared. I love my Twittersphere. 💖
A 5-year break from elected white male govt in Canada.
Reacting to the atrocities committed against Indigenous children in Canada, at peak outrage, I suggested a 5-year break from electing white men. Not jail time, not ice floes, just a different job for 5 years.
To be clear.
Response to the idea of 5 years of governance by traditionally less empowered voices has included: 'South Africa was better-governed under Apartheid' and 'But PMJT' and 'You're a racist bitch.'
But, also: 'Let's make that happen' and 'Interesting thought experiment' and 'Yaaah!'

I don't know. I suppose if someone presented as white male, but could convince a panel of BIPOC and women that his lived experience was outside that which is considered to be white male privilege, maybe he could be granted a pass. What parameters would you consider meaningful?

Understood. Is it possible that a person with white male privilege, who never faced any of the official/unofficial, written/unwritten barriers to succeeding (systemic discrimination) that many people *do* face in Canada is *not* qualified to recognize the changes needed today?

Maybe, but I bet that a House full of people lacking white male privilege and empowered to effect change would not waste the opportunity to effect change. Systemic racism and classism endure for a reason.

Maybe after the five years.
For five years, I would like to be governed by different voices and perspectives. The majority of mayors, premiers, and the prime minister of Canada are white men. Without an embargo, the same players could keep the top jobs. I want a shake up.
