So Hy-Vee has emailed a press release out that says they are starting a new security force for their stores. Here is B-roll footage they provided, showing the new force — apparently equipped with body cameras, gun, taser, etc. This will launch in "multiple markets" across chain.
Just to summarize...
1. They said while people were unaccounted for, there was no one left inside the building.
2. They rescued someone who was inside.
3. Now they say believe there are two people inside.

Spokesperson for pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly says they're in communication with Twitter to address the fake-but-verified Eli Lilly tweet that has been up for three hours and has 1,500 retweets and 10,000 likes
After she had left a visit to Oskaloosa on Monday, which included a forum with area school superintendents about the AEAs, we were told the governor’s staff specifically told the district not to invite local media.
School photographers seem to have more access to Iowa’s governor than any member of the press does currently. Second trip to the area in the last week with zero local media notification. The last time I received a public schedule for Reynolds was Jan. 29.
This is a reporter in our Oskaloosa newsroom. She came to Iowa from Alabama to pursue her dream.
Then came unexpected health issues. She needs your thoughts, and if you can they are trying to raise funds to get her closer to home, near her family.
As someone who has been involved in newspaper closures, I want to just put this out there:
If you appreciate the work produced by the journalists out there covering things like prep sports, you need to make sure you are in some way supporting that effort financially.
Want to just point out this auction story initially was raised by a small-town newspaper (the Corydon Times Republican). It eventually grew to other outlets, and we began reporting as there was a similar auction set to occur in rural Appanoose County.
Support local journalism.
The Iowa Legislature absolutely has to address the costs of public records. Governments have a duty to be transparent, they should not be billing over a half-million dollars for basic communications.
I received my seventh Best of CNHI award tonight. I have also been Photographer of the Year thrice, Reporter of the Year once, and have received two Public Service Awards.
(CNHI is the newspaper company I work for.)
Congrats to my colleagues for their recognition, too!
There are still a few days left in 2023. But one thing is for certain: it is the year of fighting against secrecy. It has been a constant battle as desires for secrecy grow.
Support local journalism, and anyone/anything putting up that fight. Including the non-profit

Department of We Don’t Want to Follow the Law: The Ottumwa school district has compiled a list of books it will remove from classrooms and school libraries — but it *refuses* to provide the list to requesters. There is no exemption in the law to keep this list secret.
Always love when I'm the only reporter in a court hearing and within minutes all the media that aren't there mysteriously somehow obtained the same information I just reported without even a credit line.
I would vote for whichever Speaker would support allowing photographers in the chambers at all times. Wonderful seeing legislators actually working in the people's House and it not being a screengrab from a controlled pool feed.
A longtime spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Public Health said she was ousted Wednesday, and she believes it was partly because she was seen as too aggressive in sharing information with the media.
@tonyleys
Not sure I can agree with including it. Overall, though, I think it shows King is a good person regardless of inappropriate jokes he made years ago in high school. His response has been top-notch.
It is sad to see that legal action is becoming the only way to jar loose public records. These disputes almost always can be resolved rather cheaply if city officials simply read the law and apply it. It really is not a that confusing of a law...

If the issue is actually that it is becoming too difficult “to define the criteria of a media outlet,” then appoint a neutral press org, or a combination of several orgs, to figure it out. An incredibly easy problem to fix.

Since Twitter doesn't allow Instagram shares anymore, I'll post some pics here of Pella Christian's first round game against MFL Mar Mac on Monday. They're back in action Thursday morning. More pics uploaded to .
We need a law now to allow cameras in federal courts. The country should be able to see the entirety of this case with their own eyes and hear with their own ears. Current practice is far out of date and keeps the public from their judicial system.
I dream of the day I am not completely flabbergasted at how low local election turnout is. So many citizens completely check out of something that impacts them directly in so many ways, it is crazy to me.
Iowa has a high community transmission of the coronavirus, says White House COVID-19 Team report released yesterday. The report is based on data ending April 2.

I've always been fascinated with the phenomenon of how people react to their words in print vs on a computer screen. Another reason, frankly, print journalism needs to remain around as long as absolutely possible. It's just different. It's permanent when its in ink.
I sort of let the paper do the announcing, but was humbled to receive this news yesterday and appreciate everyone who has reached out yesterday and today with their congrats!
An expanded update to this story: A judge has issued an arrest warrant for Gregory Showalter Sr., after he failed to show up to court for the reading of a jury verdict finding him guilty of first-degree murder.
We are in court this morning for the sentencing of Willard Miller, a 17 year old who has pled guilty to the charge of first-degree murder stemming from the death of Nohema Graber, a HS Spanish teacher.
One point was the difference in this one. A fine season comes to a close for the Pella Christian Eagles in the state semifinals.

To PR professionals submitting news releases to media organizations:
Submit it in just basic, plain text. I do not care about how beautiful your PDF/JPG is. I only care how copy/pastable it is.
I feel I can speak on behalf of every single journalist on the planet on this.
A competitor on paper, but friend in reality, Ken Allsup of Osky News recently suffered a heart attack. A GoFundMe has been started if you’d like to help. Ken has been a great asset to the Oskaloosa, Iowa community through his journalism.
Why in the world would you not capitalize on this marketing opportunity? You have thousands of people watching paint — your paint — being mixed (because that's the Internet at its best) and you squander it into bad PR, somehow...

A classroom of children was shot dead today. This problem is unique to the United States. When will something besides boilerplate statements be done to stop these tragedies from occurring?
Lets have meaningful discussion and action. Find a way.
The outpouring of support since we announced the IPSWA has been amazing. I hope my sports reporting friends will join us. I've only been part of the all-state selections for a couple years now. My only regret was not getting involved sooner. Such a historic and honored program.
ICYMI: Our first all-state selection meeting for Iowa girls' basketball all-state will be during the IGHSAU state basketball tournament. The meeting will be at the Comfort Inn located next to Wells Fargo Arena. Voting will begin promptly at 9 a.m., March 3.

I will never be able to relate to what goes through people's minds when they decide to react this way. The speed at which people resort to harassing and threatening behavior on social media, even for the most trivial things, is astonishing to me.

Would make a good story as I’m sure we will have some coverage that reflects on our history. I am proud to have turned in a good nine years or so. The newsroom has been recognized many times during that period, on a state and national level. It’s my hometown and my first gig...
Facebook comment (paraphrased): "Shouldn't you be reporting positivity rate! Because of course with more tests there will be more cases!"

The Governor’s Office has agreed to:
🔸 Undergo a one-year period of judicial oversight to make sure it continues to comply with Iowa’s Open Records Act
🔸 Pay $135,000 in legal fees and costs incurred during the year-and-a-half legal battle
Darkness is no place for a government to operate. Open meetings and open records lead to open minds. The government is supposed to work FOR the people.
Plus, breaking the law gets expensive.
