Is autoscaling a feature or a bug? From years of running services at AWS (both serverless and not serverless), I learned that while autoscaling is a popular feature launch, it is indicative of a system issue: users have to manage capacity. Autoscaling is usually NOT automatic!

Conditional puts in #dynamodb are *magical*. You get correctness semantics that enable you to scale across thousands of #lambdas or instances, without becoming a distributed systems expert! More in the 🧵👇

@ksshams @alexbdebrie @Vishnu14 Yeah. The leader replica gets the conditional write evaluates it with latest copy. If condition evaluates to true it updates its local copy, sends it to to two more replicas & waits for an ACK. Once the leader knows that the write is durable at two replicas it replies to client.

2b\ 100 byte item cost $12.5/GB (on-demand) to write to DynamoDB. 1.1KB items cost $2.27/GB to write. 100 byte item with 1 GSI costs $25/GB to write (on-demand). Moral: item size has a profound, under appreciated, impact on your DynamoDB costs.

5\ There are lots of ways to easily reduce your dynamodb item size. The key is to recognize that dropping your item size by 10% can have a meaningfully larger impact on your total DynamoDB bill - especially if you have a write heavy workload!
