The folks needed to win the leadership of a Conservative Party live on a different planet than the folks needed to win an election as leader of that Conservative Party. Navigating this reality is the central challenge of modern Conservative leadership.

#Kenney is told in caucus that those who attended the #Bowden anti - lockdown event (the rodeo) are his base. "I want a new base" says the premier, as if he's ordering room service.

@KenBoessenkool I’ve been wondering if there is some structural change in the leadership voting procedure (for the federal party at least) that might mitigate that. Though I guess that would require the party and members to believe they have a disconnect; not clear if that is the case.

@sproudfoot I don’t think there is one way to so this. Harper did it one way. Christy Clark another (look at the vote for the BC Conservatives when she won the leadership compared to her spectacular win in 2013). It can be done, but it takes spectacular political talent.

@KenBoessenkool And the epicentre of that is Alberta - ever since my first campaign there, back in the ‘86. Check the vote change ‘84 to ‘86.

@KenBoessenkool @charlesadler Really well said and 100% true. There just seems to be no room for a moderate or progressive conservative… What a shame.
