So of all the things I’ve been called in my life, deserved or less so, you can now add “Professor.”
I am thrilled to announce my appointment as the J.W. McConnell Professor of Practice at the Max Bell School of Public Policy at McGill University.

The Max Bell School of Public Policy is thrilled to announce that
@KenBoessenkool
will be joining us as the J.W. McConnell Professor of Practice in Public Policy
@McGill
. Read about

and
#policyprocess
research he'll be doing at the school:
For at least the past two decades I have balanced writing public policy with my partisan activities and my career in public affairs.

Very early this year I made the decision to focus more on the public policy side and less on partisan and professional sides. COVID reinforced and accelerated this decision.

The McConnell Professor of Practise will be the primary platform from which I intend to pursue this policy work. This non-tenure track, non-teaching position will require writing a bunch of accessible policy papers over the term of the appointment.
4/n
I intend to write on subjects such as carbon pricing, childcare, Alberta’s place in confederation, and federal transfers that will be published through the Max Bell School of Public Policy.

This adds to my recent appointment at the CD Howe Institute – where I cut my policy teeth in the mid 1990s. CD Howe has already published a number of my Intelligence Memos, and I’ve committed to writing a Commentary length paper this fall.
In recent weeks, I have also been publishing shorter thoughts and pieces at The Line, an exciting media venture by the impressive journalist
@jengerson
. I have been helping The Line in other small ways as well.
I intend to take a break from official partisan roles for a spell – though I will always answer my phone when my political friends call, from any party.
I won’t name names, but I get calls from all parties, believe it or not...
I have also stepped away from an exceedingly successful and enjoyable partnership with
@tweetsfromdon
and
@briantopp
. Kool Topp & Guy was a highlight of my professional career and Don and Brian remain true and loyal friends. I can’t thank them enough for the experience.
And while I will continue to work with Don and Brian as an associate with their new firm on some of the client files we have built together, I am now a professional free agent.
All of these professional changes have occurred alongside becoming an empty nester, becoming an Opa, and moving to rural Alberta.
I’ve been truly blessed to be able to make these kinds of large career adjustments, and this won’t be last time I do so.
Thanks to Tammy for her unwavering support and love and to my kids, including the imports and especially my granddaughter, for bringing me so much joy.
