One time I said hello and introduced myself to an intubated, unconscious patient in the ICU. Someone else scoffed/giggled. I then proceeded to explain to the patient every step of the procedure we did. No regrets.

Love all your DMs w personal stories. The ICU (& the hospital in general) can be a heartbreaking & dehumanizing place. While this one person didn’t do so, I have worked w many great docs who prioritize empathy. I hope we can all work toward a more humanizing model of healthcare.

As a med student, my all-female colorectal surgery team knew I was interested in ObGyn. During every colon surgery they’d point the camera at the uterus and go “there’s your organ!” or “this ones for Kelsey!” And that was some top notch positive energy that every student deserves

To be clear: I am both an ObGyn & a proud IUD user. But hot damn the pain of my first IUD insertion was horrendous! I’m sure the provider had also wished I was a little sleepy for it. Thankfully my next IUD insertion was totally fine. Love IUDs, but ppl deserve pain mgmt

One argument I’ve seen several times is that the covid treatment is “tested & vetted,” while the vaccine is “unfamiliar, not well tested.” Hate to break it to you, but they are adjusting covid treatment in real time, with varying success.

I’ll never forget when a group of male MRI techs & a male doctor didnt know if it was safe for me to get an MRI w a copper IUD. Their solution? “Ok we’ll do the MRI. Just let us know if you start feeling any burning pelvic pain or can feel your IUD moving”

For those interested: it was safe to get the MRI w the copper IUD in place (for me, at least!). But it was mind boggling to have multiple medical professionals act so confounded by this. And btw this was at a top hospital in a major city.
