Emergency personnel jumped into action in North Dakota on Wednesday morning after a dog got stranded on a chunk of ice in a river. A passerby, who was not the dog's owner, saw the animal go into the river and called for help. Authorities said the dog had escaped its property.

A chemical plant caught fire in Westlake, LA Thursday, spewing thick smoke into the air, hours after Hurricane Laura hit the area. The governor advised residents to shelter in place until further notice and close their doors and windows. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
