Personal news. I am delighted to have been appointed as the next Chief Executive of
@mencap_charity
, an organisation I have always admired, with a massively important equalities agenda.
Meanwhile, much to do at
@UNICEF_uk
until I move on in June.
We're pleased to announce the appointment of
@jon_sparkes
as our new Chief Executive, starting in June this year.
Jon brings valuable experience, with a strong track record of growing scale and impact at major UK charities.

Delighted to be awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for my work on homelessness. An honour to be recognised personally and a recognition of the amazing work of my former colleagues at
@Crisis
. My parents would have been beyond proud right now.
We're delighted that
@jon_sparkes
has been awarded the OBE for Services to Homeless People in the Jubilee honours. As Crisis CEO, Jon worked tirelessly to improve life for people experiencing homelessness & to
#EndHomelessness
for good. Congratulations Jon
Please stop asking me what special housing people experiencing homelessness need if they have a mental health or drug & alcohol problem. They need a house for their housing needs, and support services for their other needs. Like everyone else.

I was delighted to be at the launch event for this campaign last night. So pleased to see the Princess of Wales putting her energy behind the
#ShapingUs
campaign - when we get it right in the early years, we get it right for the child, and we get it right for our society.
‘By focusing our collective time, energy & resources on these most preventative years, we can make a huge difference.’
Find out from The Princess of Wales why we've launched
#ShapingUs
and what we hope to achieve through this important work.
@KensingtonRoyal
Great to join the

We want to make the link between the skills we develop in early childhood and the core foundations that set us up for life and help us to thrive as adults.

Delighted the
@scotgov
accepted recommendations on ending rough sleeping, the Homelessness & Rough Sleeping Action Group starts work on transforming the use of temporary accommodation so it ends homelessness. Here's my blog from the 8th meeting of
#HRSAG
Human beings, our fellow citizens, do not sleep in bins, pods, containers, or tents and sleeping bags (unless camping). We sleep in houses, flats and apartments. Homelessness is an injustice that needs sorting out; it doesn't need this sort of nonsense.
Let's start talking again tomorrow about ending homelessness. Build 90000
#socialhomes
per year, make housing benefit
#coverthecost
of housing, fund homelessness prevention services properly and give renters more security. Homelessness affects all of us.
#EndHomelessness
Really good to see this leadership from Prince William and the determination to
#endhomelessness
. Absolutely right to put truly affordable social housing at the heart of the solution.
@KensingtonRoyal
We know that, with the right political & social will, society can
#EndHomelessness
for good so it was great to hear Prince William talking about his plans to build more social housing in the Duchy of Cornwall & how he wants help end homelessness in the UK.
VOLUNTEERS AVAILABLE
@crisis_uk
put the call out to our wonderful

@crisis

Thank you for your clarity as ever
@crisis_uk
, homelessness is down to policies that drive inequality, poverty and a lack of truly affordable homes. Rough sleeping is acute homelessness; it is extremely dangerous and is not a lifestyle choice.
Sleeping on the streets is NOT a lifestyle choice. We don’t have nearly enough affordable homes, rents are soaring and this is leaving people destitute and forced to sleep rough.
This is a consequence of poverty. And poverty in this country has been exacerbated by policy choices
Home Office has published the guidance on deporting people for rough sleeping. This will not end rough sleeping. This will drive people who need our help further away from the help they need for fear of being deported.
#homeforall
8 hours serving dinners, signing-in guests and disinfecting covid away like there's no tomorrow. I thoroughly recommend volunteering for

Please spread the word that most people, given the opportunity, just want to build and live their lives in an ordinary home as part of an ordinary community.
Almost everyday someone suggests to me an "innnovative" way to house homeless people. Once and for all NOBODY SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER OR A POD. Caps off again. Thank you.
It is a great privilege to have joined the amazing
@UNICEF_uk
team - such a talented, high performing and friendly set of colleagues! Lots to do, and more important than ever that we work to build a better world
#foreverychild
now and in the future.
An exciting start to 2022 for UNICEF UK as our new Chief Executive,
@jon_sparkes
, has officially joined us this week.
Welcome Jon! We look forward to working with you to build a better world

.
New Year's resolution? To do everything I can with the amazing team at
@crisis_uk
and our colleagues from other charities, councils, housing associations, gov't departments, businesses and politicians from all sides to
#endhomelessness
once and for all. Happy New Year.
The most frustrating thing about the appalling news that rough sleeping has risen by 17% year on year in London, is that there are solutions. There are solutions to the root causes of homelessness and there are solutions to rough sleeping.
#endhomelessness
I am saddened by the circumstances, but delighted to see Local Housing Allowance returned to
#CovertheCost
of the bottom third of local market rents to help stop families losing their homes in this
#COVID19
emergency. This makes human and economic sense.
It is the case that
#homelessness
can sometimes go hand in hand with a range of other problems. But there is one thing that links all homelessness - the lack of a secure, safe & affordable
#home
. Homelessness is a matter of poverty & inequality. It can be solved; it can be ended.
Robert Jenrick has said homelessness is "more of a crisis of addiction and mental health than it is about housing"
Adding that there is a need to tackle "aggressive begging, gangs on the streets, individuals coming to this country to beg.”
#ukhousing
Lots of announcements today. The one our society needs is a plan to end the injustice of homelessness. Build 90000 social homes needed in England every year. Pay housing benefit to
#coverthecost
of housing. Fund the support services to prevent homelessness.
#endhomelessness
Delighted by this news, that
@matthew_downie
has been awarded an MBE for his services to tackling homelessness. Much deserved. Well done Matt!

Amazing day. Talked to media about

Horrified to hear of the death of David Amess MP, who I was speaking with about ending homelessness only last week. Our society and democracy is poorer again if MPs can’t be safe when meeting the public. So sorry for David’s loved ones and colleagues.
Great work
@MrGeorgeClarke
. Social housing is the bedrock of community and society. Housing left to the market alone means there are losers whose lives are disadvantaged from the start. I owe everything to my council house childhood.
#CouncilHousing100
#endhomelessness
Delighted to have been asked to Chair this group. So much good work has already been done, but works starts today to see how much further we can go together to

in Wales. Early steps will certainly include listening to people with experience of homelessness.
The Homelessness Action Group meets for the first time today. Chaired by Chief Executive of

this group of experts from across Wales will advise us on the steps we need to take as a nation to end homelessness
Looking forward to this important report coming from the Social Housing Commission set up by our colleagues at

Report out tomorrow.
Major growth in building social housing has to be part of any plan to end homelessness.

For people facing

, and for the amazing staff and volunteers who support them; we need robust emergency measures to test and protect people in the most vulnerable position right now - so all citizens can self-isolate if they need to.
The worst thing is that is doesn't need to be like this. With the right support this man (and many, many others) could be housed, working and getting his life back on track.
All good wishes to

To mark the 40th anniversary of

The book commemorates four decades of charitable work, with all profits going directly towards supporting people who are street homeless.
Fantastic news for
@crisis_uk
and for
@matthew_downie
. Delighted with this appointment; couldn't be better for Crisis' next chapter and for ending homelessness in Britain.
We're delighted to announce
@matthew_downie
as Crisis' new Chief Executive. Matt, our current Director of Policy, says: "It will be a privilege to ensure people facing homelessness are listened to by those in power & offered the best possible services."

Important statement from the UK government today. Good to see a bold approach to supporting people forced to sleep rough into permanent settled housing.
Highlight of my first day at
@UNICEF_uk
has been a wonderful welcome video produced and presented to me by members of our Youth Advisory Board. Looking forward to working with the YAB to ensure we reflect the views of children & young people in all we do.

In a lockdown, we must ensure that people forced to sleep rough are able to move into self-contained covid-safe accommodation. This was done with such great effect in England in the summer, and continues to be done in Wales and Scotland.

Thank you
@jk_rowling
for your generous support.
@crisis_uk
will continue to do all we can to support people facing

pandemic & work tirelessly to ensure everyone is permanently rehoused as we come out of lockdown.
Your support is a real boost.
As ever in a crisis of this sort, the poorest and most vulnerable are hit hardest, so in honour of the Battle of Hogwarts, I'll be making a donation of £1m, half of which will go to , who're helping the homeless during the pandemic

made it on to the election news agenda today. Lots of claims and counter-claims. The homelessness organisations have put their expertise together to make some simple asks of all parties to

A wonderful memory; one of many examples of James' commitment to the work to end homelessness - cross-party, cross-government, and grounded in evidence and compassion. Hearing him speak about homelessness at a party conference dinner is a lasting memory for me.
One of many images that captures what
@JBrokenshire
was about: here, publicly supporting
@crisis_uk
, with
@JohnHealey_MP
. It was the issue that mattered, not the differences between parties or between a charity & Government over how to solve it.

Good to hear ongoing commitment to recommendations of the

What is it going to take to tackle our homelessness and housing crisis? A lot more houses that people can really afford. We've done it before, now let's do it again - 145000 social homes per year.

@CIHhousing

Good to see rough sleeping funding at £640m as long as it goes primarily on preventing rough sleeping rather than just managing the situation. Especially needed on extending Housing First pilots and going to scale.
Great meeting of the
@scotgov
Homelessness & Rough Sleeping Action Group
#HRSAG
today. Good level of agreement of draft proposals on tackling rough sleeping - through prevention, support to front-line workers and access to housing. Should finalise details over the next few days.
To
#endhomelessness
we need a commitment to provide permanent housing and ensure people have the means to afford it. And more support for people to avoid rough sleeping in the first place.

Today's report from
@crisis_uk
setting out the impact cuts in housing benefits is having on homelessness. Until there is enough social housing the Government must invest in a proper welfare safety net that fully covers the cost of housing.
It's never been more important for charities to campain for equality and rights, and against the stuctural causes of poverty and injustice. That's not party politics, but it will mean trying to change the policies that cause the damage.
#truthtopower
In a newspaper article today, our Chair says that ‘for charities to survive and thrive, it is even more important that they demonstrate sensitivity and respect for everyone.’
Everyone In was extraordinary, and now we need a joined-up strategy and a determination to prevent homelessness happening in the first place if the Westminster Government is to achieve its manifesto pledge to end rough sleeping in England.
Unfreezing the freeze is not enough. Housing benefit needs to

New rules on deporting foreign rough sleepers face legal challenge -
@GoodLawProject
It's inhuman to think you could loose your job due to the pandemic, be forced to sleep rough, & then be deported. These new rules will drive people away from support.
It doesn't have to be this way if action is taken now. We've seen an amazing response to protect people facing
#homelessness
. Need to double our efforts, & need supportive policies from the UK government.

Great news that

@homelessimpact
Great to hear
@RobertJenrick
tell the
@HouseofCommons
the Vagrancy Act (the law that criminalises rough sleeping) should be 'consigned to history'. In response to a question from
@twocitiesnickie
, he said it was his opinion that this 'antiquated' legislation should be repealed.
Heading out to talk about plans to

@SkyNews
at 6.45 this morning. Why we can and must end this injustice. Why all political parties should commit to a plan to end homelessness now.
Very good news to see
@RobertJenrick
announce an extension to the evictions ban and increasing notice periods to 6 months. More to do, but an important step forward.
Powerful report from
@Shelter

Good to see this level of focus on rough sleeping. Now we need the same focus on tackling the causes of rough sleeping and homelessness - more
#socialhousing
and housing benefits that

of renting.
🔹
@RishiSunak
confirms nearly £650m to help rough sleepers into permanent accommodation. This is a significant step change in support service provision, building on the work that has seen rough sleeping fall 9% in the last year. We will end rough sleeping in this Parliament👇
Meanwhile, building social homes is proven yet again to reduce poverty.
If we want to reduce poverty, we build social homes and make homes in other sectors affordablr by supporting people with housing benefit to
#coverthecost
of housing.
Great day visiting
@SYorksHA
LiveWell services in Sheffield. Humbled by story after story of services that have prevented homelessness or stays in inappropriate mental health facilities. Proud to be a non exec director of this great housing association. Great team
@TonyStacey
Everyone needs a safe home they can afford.
We need to make the changes to housing benefit permanent, suspend the benefits cap and terrible

The answer is for the government to do what it did so well earlier in the year. Self-contained accommodation where people can self-isolate during the pandemic. With ring-fenced funding for councils.
Covid: Bid to reopen homeless night shelters criticised
So proud of the work of our amazing staff and volunteers.

We know it might be tougher & lonelier for our guests this year so we're running telephone befriending and online activities to make it as jolly as possible!
Without the extraordinary work led by your department
@RobertJenrick
many more people facing homelessness would have died. Let's make sure we finish the job and
#endhomelessness
for good and for everyone.
Today’s
@ONS
statistics show that 16 homeless people are known to have died of
#COVID19
since the start of the pandemic.
Each of these deaths is a tragedy.
I’m hugely grateful to all those who have worked on

and helped to protect many lives.
Now we need the designated funding and policy changes to support the next phase. Ending homelessness is possible, but the housing and support needs to be there, & housing benefit changes need to be permanent and for everyone.
