My dad died of a heart attack on Monday. He was my best friend, and the influence for my passion. Gerry Fanta, you were the best father that a son could ask for. You were the best storyteller I know. I love you and will miss you Dad. So, so much.
“I’m a living testimony. I give all glory to God. He sent me trials and tribulations, but it was to build my character. I kept on believing. I did all I could so God could do all I can’t.” - Paige Bueckers to

Georgetown women’s basketball lost its head coach, Tasha Butts, to cancer at the age of 41 in October. This team has played for her all year. They were picked 10th in the Big East.
The Hoyas are going to the conference title game for the first time ever.
Friday night. Cleveland, Ohio.
The most anticipated and most watched women’s basketball Final Four game in the history of the sport.
Caitlin Clark vs. Paige Bueckers.
Iowa. Connecticut. Absolute theater.
This is bigger than basketball, and what it’s really about. Shaheen Holloway telling Robbie Avila to keep his head up is the best thing you will see today:
Patrick Ewing says he’s going to have to call James Dolan because he keeps getting asked about what passes he’s wearing and keeps getting stopped in the hallway. “I thought this was my house! They should know who the hell I am!” - Ewing on The Garden
Breaking: She said YES!
It’s the greatest thrill to announce that my best friend and soulmate is now the future Mrs. Fanta. I am beyond excited to spend life with you
@RizzoVicki
, and cannot wait to marry you!
Let me be clear: it’s an absolute travesty that the transfer portal in college basketball opens tomorrow. It takes away from literally the best week of the year in the sport. At least give it a week and let the tournament have our undivided attention. The portal is toxic. Enough!
In the Final Four, we will have:
Alabama - First Ever Appearance
Purdue - First Appearance Since 1980
NC State - First Appearance Since 1983
UConn - Seventh Appearance Since 1999
Breaking: Tonight’s game between Fairleigh Dickinson and Long Island University at LIU is in a delay because FDU players are stuck in an elevator coming from the locker room to the court. Firemen are on the scene trying to get FDU players out of the elevator now:
To make this that much more powerful: Today is Tasha Butts’ birthday. If you don’t believe in a higher power…what an incredible story and an inspiration from this Hoyas team, which has played in her honor all season.

RIP to a legend
@howieschwab
. We can all agree Stump the Schwab was an all-time show. When he jumped into bracket forecasts for Fox and I was in the early days of hosting Shootaround trying to find guests, Howie always said yes and was giving of his time. A great and kind person.
I normally dislike the takes of “they didn’t belong in the tournament” because anything can happen in one game. But, I’ll make an exception here. Nothing against UVA. Tony Bennett’s a hell of a coach. But this particular team had no business being in this field. It’s the truth.
For the first time in the 45-year history of the Big East Conference, a team went over 5 games over .500 in conference play and did not make the NCAA Tournament.
That team is Seton Hall.
At 70 years young, Geno Auriemma has done one of the very best coaching jobs of his entire 39-year run at UConn. He lost FIVE players to season-ending injuries, and yet this UConn team is going to the Final Four for the 15th time in 16 years. An incredibly resilient season.
The Long Beach State AD wants credit for…firing a head coach? With all due respect, sir, but you shouldn’t be allowed to watch this team live at the tournament. Joke show.
DJ Burns was asked if he could give Zach Edey problems: “He hasn’t had anybody put scoring pressure on him as much as I will, well maybe he did, but not under a stage like this.”
Jim Donovan is as good of a voice of a team as any broadcaster you will find. This reflection on yesterday’s Browns loss and the fan reaction is very, very well done. It deserves a mic drop:
This is why March is the best: James Madison’s Noah Freidel details his 82-year-old grandma, Peggy, flying from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to New York to be here for tonight’s game. He wasn’t losing this game with Grandma Peggy in the house.
The Big East Conference, in the football driven world, reminds everybody yet again that they not only prioritize basketball but win at the highest level in it. The league is about to win its 4th national title in the last 8 NCAA Tournaments.

NCAA President Charlie Baker released the following, saying that they are seeking to remove college prop bets from all betting markets. “The NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game.”
One high major coach to me on the state of college basketball:
“It’s a f#%king disaster. For us veteran coaches, this is not what we signed up for. I am not mad at the kids one bit. They’re seeking their value and earning money, and I think they should. It’s your right to get…

Hassan Diarra to me: “We are the bluest of the bloods.”
“I believe that we can come right back next year and make it 3 national championships in a row.”
Breaking: The BIG EAST Conference and Madison Square Garden announced the BIG EAST Tournament will continue to be held at The Garden through 2032. The announcement ensures that The World’s Most Famous Arena will host 50 consecutive BIG EAST Tournaments.
Chills: Before Georgetown’s press conference tonight following the defeat to UConn in the Big East Championship Game, the Hoyas’ Graceann Bennett announced that Georgetown and interim Darnell Haney are in discussions to make him permanent head coach.
Nate Oats was a high school coach 11 years ago.
Dan Hurley was a high school coach 14 years ago.
Pretty cool stuff to be talked about with the evolution of a career.
If North Carolina was not named North Carolina, they would not even be a discussion point nationally. Tar Heels are 0-9 against quadrant one. That spells 3 letters:

The Atlantic Coast Conference is 11-2 in the NCAA Tournament and just guaranteed itself a Final Four team.
There is absolutely no doubt who the biggest winner is of the big dance:
THE ACC!!!!!!!!!!
Terrence Shannon Jr. is averaging 30.5 points over the last six games. Nobody in college basketball is scoring the ball better than the Illinois star right now.
We have just watched one of the greatest teams in the history of college basketball. And this comes the year after the same program won six tournament games by an average of 20 points.
UConn. Basketball Capital of the World.
The Big East Conference is 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament a year after the league went 12-4 in the big dance. The finale of opening weekend for the conference: UConn vs. Northwestern. If the Huskies win, that's a 6-0 statement a week after the committee gave the league 3 bids.
Sources close to John Calipari say he had bad feelings about his situation at Kentucky, and that the lack of support had grown to the point where he didn’t feel like he could stay on because he didn’t feel wanted. The assets Arkansas put in place convinced him to make this move.
Whether or not you agree with the four teams the college football playoff committee selected - I tend to agree - there’s no denying that this is a dark day for the sport.
Florida State won every game. Why play the season if you can’t compete for a national title? That’s wrong.
Exclusive: Rick Pitino and Jim Calhoun had not spoken to each other in a regular conversation in over 20 years. Today, that happened at Madison Square Garden after St. John's beat Seton Hall to advance to the Big East Tournament semifinals. Here it is:
Dan Hurley's wife enjoys being in the northeast, they have a son Danny who is working in NJ and another son in Andrew who is graduating from UConn and could work for Dan or in basketball. Bob Sr. enjoys being close enough to UConn. Hurley's not messing with happiness and titles.

Jose Ramirez will have a statue someday. The guy bet on Cleveland, a small-market organization that doesn’t pay star talent. He stuck by the franchise during a challenging period. He set the tone to this season with the new contract. It was only fitting that he came up big today.
This is an all-time entrance by a new head coach. Mark Pope getting off the bus with his teammates from Kentucky’s historic 1996 national title team is phenomenal. This is how you fire up Big Blue Nation. Pope has immense pride for this program.
Relationships make this job special. My first assignment on the road in my current job was to interview this man ahead of his first season. A friendship was formed. Every time we talk, he asks me if he can do anything to help me. Patrick Ewing is truly a champion - in everything.
The Big East is having its best NCAA Tournament performance since conference reconfiguration. The league is 7-2 in the big dance and is sending 3 teams to the S16 for the first time in its current makeup.
UConn to Vegas. Xavier to KC. Creighton to Louisville.
Statement. Made.
Virginia lost six of its final 10 games of the season. They lost those games by an average of 19 points, including three games by at least 25.
Their season ended with a 25-point loss — in the NCAA Tournament! — to a team that was the 7 seed in the Mountain West Tournament.
Folks, the James Madison fans were READY for their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013. The Barclays Center is as loud as I have ever heard this building. I’m serious.
Somewhere in Queens, a Met fan is getting up for his daily middle-of-the-night bathroom trip, and the entire street was just awoken by a massive cheer of excitement.
The Southeastern Conference is 1-5 in the NCAA Tournament, and all five losses have been to a lower seeded team:

Dan Hurley addressed the rumor mill on The Herd: “It’s flattering, but I’ve got a long career of turning down jobs or more money to stay in places that I was happy. Right now at UConn, the opportunity to go for a 3-peat is the only thing on anyone’s mind.”
NEW: I went 1-on-1 with Rick Pitino following his introduction at MSG. On why he took the St. John’s job, being back in the Big East, and his message to New Yorkers.
For the first time in UConn men’s basketball history, the Huskies have the Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year honoree. Our board of selectors has selected Dan Hurley as this year’s winner.
Announcement: Very excited to be expanding my role covering college basketball for
