A couple of people seem annoyed by the "I'm an author; my degree is in " posts. I think the intent was to show that many authors have backgrounds not in writing, and sometimes that influences their work. I don't think anybody meant to say you NEED a degree (in anything) to write.

Here's the thing about self-pub vs. trade: Yes, the very successful self-pub authors are outliers. Maybe in the 1%. But the very successful trade authors are also outliers. Most people EVEN WITH a trade deal don't do very well - certainly aren't rich. This is a tough business.

I am continually stunned by how warm, kind, and supportive the indie community is. The biggest authors in indie were chatting up the smallest over DragonCon and showed nothing but love. It was amazing and inspirational and so, so much fun.

Wasn't thrilled with the ending of this book until I wrote it. I just gave myself chills. People, write what you love. Unless you can make a fortune writing to market, then maybe do that. But write what you love if you can.

My dreams of being a contest winning author are dust. Bounced from #SPSFC and #SPFBO in the opening round. It was nice to gather some interest from reviewers even if my work isn't resonating with judges.

OK new author dream: if I could go full time and make real money writing, I'd do more cons. Man I love cons. Just sit at the bar and talk to everybody who wants to talk, buy them drinks, and love life.
