I am your brother in humanity. I am Jewish. I am not Israeli. I am not a Jewish Nationalist (Zionist). Netanyahu does not take my calls. I love my Jewish brothers and sisters. I love my Palestinian brothers and sisters. I treasure both justice and peace for all humans. Clear?
In the mosque to celebrate Eid with my Muslim brothers and sisters, listening to the proclamation of God’s greatness. He is greater than our conflicts, the Merciful.
I spoke today in the Jewish High School where I teach and I called the attack in Christ Church "White Supremacist Terrorism." It is time to stop giving these guys a "pass" and call it what it is.
Any form of any religion that promotes inhumanity and cruelty is clearly not from God and in the end they will have to answer to Him for the evil they have done in His name.
In Jewish houses of mourning, we cover the mirrors to direct our attention away from our outsides to peer into our insides. The passing of a beloved person is an opportunity to re-assess our sense of the world and our place in it.
The same Polish border guards who beat off Afghan and Arab refugees with sticks and sent them to the woods to die, now warmly welcome Ukrainian refugees . When will we learn to have mercy on ALL humanity? When?
"No innocents in Gaza" because they are responsible for Hamas. What?
50% are children and they don't even vote. The statement is either insane or evil or both.
My old Muslim neighbor in Tamilnadu once walked me out of his house and said "This was the practice of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him." Years later my elderly Hungarian rabbi walked me out of the house and said "This was the practice or Avraham Avinu (Our father Abraham)"
The attempted lynching and attacks on Arab businesses by Right-wing Israeli provocateurs in Bat Yam are despicable. These people do not represent my religion. There is no excuse for harming innocent people. A disgrace.
inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi ra'jioun / Indeed to God we belong and indeed to him we will return.
I am deeply grateful for this message and it’s profound truth. Thank you to all my precious Muslim brothers and sisters for sharing words of comfort.
We always hosted a few Iftars like this in our home. They were beautiful prayerful times of sharing . I will try to do it by Zoom this year. Not the same thing. :-(
Today I will bury my mother. Her body has been cleansed (tahara) and wrapped in simple shroud by the women of the Hevra Qadisha (The Holy Fellowship) who treat the body with respect and dignity as it was the vessel for a holy soul and instrument for goodness in this world.
To my Muslim brothers and sisters, I wish you an Eid Mubarak. I pray that you respect the day with fine food and fine clothes but also with fine manners and abundant acts of charity and kindness.
I am pretty sure that I have more Muslims wishing me a Happy Chanukah than almost any Jew in the world. That means a lot to me. It is a little taste of what the world could and should be like.
Mulla Nasrudin was worried by a vicious-looking dog.
"Don't be afraid of him," the owner reassured. "you know the old proverb: A barking dog never bites."
"Yes," replied Mulla Nasrudin. "you know the proverb, I know the proverb, but does the dog know the proverb?"
Again, to be clear, I oppose forcing any human being from their home by force whether in Sheikh Jarrah or anywhere else in the world. Neither nationalist or religious fervor can justify cruelty.
My Sufi teacher, Prof. Habibullah Shah once expressed delight at my obstacles in prayer. "The Shaytaan is a smart burglar. He never tries to rob an empty house." So if there is disturbance, it means there is something good there worth disturbing.
A remarkable twitter exchange between comedienne Sarah Silverman and her "troll" that changed his life. (Worth breaking my silence today to share this)
I spent 12 years studying Hindu scriptures in Sanskrit and Tamil. I met great Hindu leaders like The Kanchi "Periyavar" and Bhuvaneswari Swamigal, of Chennai, the Saiva Siddhanta Mathadhipatis in Madurai and when I see who represents "Hinduttva" on twitter, I want to cry.
The Ukrainian child has to be OUR child. The Palestinian grandmother has to be OUR grandmother. The Uyghur mother has to be OUR mother. The Jewish brother has to be OUR brother. Until we embrace the reality of the human family, we are doomed to more hate and violence.
Imam Malik (رحمه الله) once told a young boy from the tribe of Quraysh:
“You need to learn etiquette (adab) before you acquire knowledge.”

You know you are a Jew-fi when you listen to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's "Allah Hu" on the way to synagogue for morning prayers to get your spiritual juices flowing. (Yes, that was me grooving to Qawwali on my way to shul)
The world is changing. The great breach between the spiritual children of Abraham is healing. What could please our Creator more than to see more harmony in His creation.
My experience is probably different from almost anyone else here. I have friends in Gaza. I have family in Israel. I have friends throughout the region both Jewish and Arab. My love and concern is for ALL of them. That is MY personal reality. If you don't get it. Don't get it.
There is a special place in paradise for those people whose compassion extends to those who are not like them.
The forgotten stories of Muslims who saved Jewish people during the Holocaust
It was the Arab Spring that drew me to Twitter. I saw the power of this medium for sharing ideas, shaping conversations and mobilizing action. I believed and still believed that Social Media is a powerful tool not just a toy.
This represents an authentic Jewish view that Muslims are fellow believers and deserve our respect. Their Prophet and their book likewise deserve our respect. Our goal should be to promote proper religion, justice and the welfare of all humanity.
I am Jewish and I am observant Jew and I can say with no hesitation that Islam can create truly exceptional people because many of my closest friends are religious serious Muslims made great by their commitment inside and outside to Islam.
Religions may teach you to treat other members of your religion with special consideration and love. But, be logical. Do you really think you can treat others like devils but suddenly turn into an angel in dealing with your own? Good people are good to EVERYONE.
Over 60 Shi'a school girls murdered in Afghanistan.
No one seemed to care.
Please speak out against the oppression of Palestinians, but extend that concern to the rest of humanity.
I am 57 years old and my mother looked at my shoes "You need to tie that shoe better mister or you are going to trip." I said "Mom I am 57!" "You are still my boy!"
I have fallen in love with the phrase قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ, qurratul ayin, "coolness of the eyes." It captures something for which I was missing the words, a pleasure that hovers between the spiritual and physical.. It defies description but this seems to work.
“Be like a bee, small in size but great in ambition; it gathers good and brings forth good.”
— Sufism for Non-Sufis?: Ibn 'Ata' Allah al-Sakandari's Taj al-'Arus by Sherman A. Jackson
How can we ask God to have mercy on us if we have no mercy on others? The word "Tzedaka" or "sadaqa" does not just mean "charity." It comes from the word "righteousness." "justice" It is setting things right, establishing justice in the world.
I believe that it is a moral imperative to want for other people exactly the same prosperity, health, safety and peace you want for yourself. To want less than that is to fail in the mission of being truly human.
I appreciate the outpouring of concern and support for the Jewish community from the Muslim community. We also need to stand up for our Muslim brothers and sisters, including seeking justice, safety and peace for Palestinians. Love makes no exceptions.
This is age of hijacked religion. Hinduism by Nationalism and bigotry. Judaism by Nationalism, isolationism or apathy Christianity by right-wing identity politics or bland secularism. Islam by extremism and sectarianism. Time to take our faiths back and make them healthy.
Please note that I do not speak for anyone but myself. My opinions do not reflect those of any religious group, my employer, my relatives or friends. My opinions like myself and everything else in the world are a work in progress and are always subject to revision and change.
I am sorry, but this is just plain dumb. "Allah" is clearly cognate with Hebrew "El, Elohe, and Elohim) . ALL Jewish books in Arabic (and there are many) us "Allah" for God. The Jewish scholar Maimonides confirms that Muslims are believers in the exact same God as we do.
I will say this straight. Too often, Rabbis who otherwise have wonderful things to say about Torah and human values, will apply those values in every situation BUT Israel/ Palestine, reverting to group-think, and ethno-politics in the place where their moral voice is MOST needed.
Do these orange idiots imagine that Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharyy, Madhvacharya, Manikkavacakar, Mirabai, any of the great Hindu saints of the past would join in this repulsive holocaust they are planning? Shame on them for both evil and stupidity.
The word tzedaka/sadaqa does not mean "charity." The verb means "to be right." It is not just an act of kindness, it is a way of "making things right" creating a new and better, more fair reality.
To those who attack churches in the name of Islam: Caliph Umar and Salah ad-Din protected churches. Pretty sure they knew their Faith So who do you think YOU are?
It is remarkable that no matter how many times I have supported the rights of my Palestinian brothers and sisters, there will always be those who INSIST that because I am Jewish I MUST have some secret hatred. It is tiring and disheartening. Please just stop it.
I want to wish all my Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed Eid. This is a good reminder of the power of happiness. May the joy of this Eid solidify all the spiritual gains of Ramadan and bring you to new levels of joy in the service of The Creator.
My mom was a remarkably unprejudiced woman. She had friends from all over the world, every race and religion. She greeted folks with openness and kindness no matter who they were or where they came from. She taught me to approach other people with authentic curiosity and respect
A simple prayer of Moses (pbuh) from the Qur'an rooted in trust of his Lord.
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ
rabbi innee lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeerun
"My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You bestow on me!"
-Al-Qur'an 28:24
I attended a funeral today of an unmarried old man, handicapped, no children, no family, no money, no position in life. Buried by over 100 friends who loved him for always seeing the good in everyone and everything. That is a beautiful and honorable ending.
A person came to the Messenger of Allah (saw) and said: “O Allah’s messenger, dispense some advice to me.” The Prophet said: “Never become angry."
-reported by Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.)
Why the Eid greetings from a Jewish guy? It means something to be a "brother in humanity." It means a willingness to share in joys and sorrows with humanity. It is not a well-defined role, I am kind of figuring out how to do it as I go. Hopefully, I starting to get it.
Jewish and Muslim burial practices, washing, wrapping and burying represent and honest and faithful acceptance of death in the hope of resurrection. There is no attempt to make the dead look like they are alive, paint them up, put them in caskets that look like comfy beds.
