I've been troubled by leg and hip pains for almost a year. Doctors and specialists in New Jersey repeatedly told me it's nothing and to visit "physical therapists." I didn't trust them and decided to double-check in China. Bone tumor diagnosed on my first day of arrival.

The tumor could be found on the first day because these overcrowded public hospitals work 24/7 to offer same-day services (including reports) for MRI, CT, etc. I don't have any insurance but the full price for MRI was $60. Reverse cultural shock.

GDP per Capita is not a meaningful measure for the bottom half. A shaxian/lanzhou meal in China costs $2 while a Big Mac meal in the US costs $9. Low-income urban Chinese definitely have a decent life in general, especially from my perspective who studies Latin America...

China's wealth inequality is even worse than that of the United States. What's worse, China's GDP-per-capita is 550% poorer than the United States. Thus the bottom half of Chinese people live in deep poverty, a kind of poverty that's almost unimaginable in the West.

Chinatown in the Americas was always considered enemy of hygiene in the 19th and early 20th century, no matter if there's a plague. In Latin America, it's a common strategy to accuse the Chinese of eating rats and dogs when locals couldn't compete with Chinese business owners.
