As a Gen Xer, we were the first generation who grew up, or at least came of age, with no parents home; and were the first to have cable TV - it was all new - and watching mTV and CNN was the replacement we had for our absent parents.

how do I explain to my gen x parents that the news is something you sit down and watch for 30 minutes and not insidious background noise for the entire day

Maybe the TV, but I'm 62 and no only were my parents no home, but most of my friends parents weren't home either.
