The Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the most distinctive of the 34 species of #birds endemic to #SriLanka , is only found in wet zone forests in the SW. Numbers are declining and it is classed as vulnerable on the @IUCNRedList . Threats include logging, agriculture and housing development.

Photos I took recently of #SriLanka Hanging Parrots in the hills above Ratnapura. These small (14cm) and pretty #birds are found in no other country in the world. They are less gregarious than Sri Lanka's several parakeets and you'll normally see them alone or in small groups.

It's most unfortunate that another #Maldives opposition MP, @afarismaumoon , was convicted on 27 June for political activities, especially with presidential elections only 3 months off. Maldivians need police, prosecutors and judges to help defend the principles of #democracy .
