We'd never find the name of the Consul Wojciech Rychlewicz, if not for one man, Dr Bob Meth, American Jewish leader from California who came with the story of his mother's recue to the
@PLinLosAngeles
. He brought these four pages of her memoirs. 2/6
Ellen Meth (Edwarda Wang), was a 17-year old Jewish refugee, her Turkish visa was about to expire and her family had nowhere to go, because no country wanted more Jews. Rychlewicz gave her and her father document claiming both were Catholic. We found 100s of such documents. 3/6
Most of such papers found at
@aan_gov_pl
were issued to people whose names and surnames suggest they were Polish Jews. Many of them were found later on on migration lists to Palestine. Ellen Meth claims, refugees knew there was a consul eager to give them such certif. 4/6
Thanks to such papers and other operations, Poland's wartime government in exile managed to smuggle up to 5,000 Polish people, mostly Jews, through the territory of the neutral Turkey. Turkish authorities did not oppose this humanitarian operation. 5/6
