Had a friend today (who doesn’t know my dad) ask me if I wanted to talk about him/my caregiving for him when we were catching up. Def was a lightbulb moment for me that I’d like to share more about. A 🧵:
It may seem superficial, but I think I’m now of the opinion that it’s more
SLMPD told the press there’s no tox report because there had to be “reasonable suspicion of impairment” to test for drugs.
Now there’s evidence the officer not only crashed into Bar:PM, but he also ran a red light.
The status quo isn’t working. We need ⬆️ civilian oversight.
Oh boy. Today, police announced that they did not give a breathalyzer exam to the St. Louis police officer who crashed into my clients bar bc other officers determined he was not impaired. Well here video of him running a red light seconds before he crashed into Bar:PM 1
Lol wait, we're supposed to believe the homophobic slur caught on body cam footage came from someone *besides* the 4 officers who damaged Bar:PM & beat the shit out of Morris??
Yeah, right.
@22ndCircuitSTL
should order SLMPD to release the footage. Let us see it for ourselves.
Great catch by Channel 4. They note how SLMPD has now twice changed the story on the reason for the crash. First it was a dog, then it was “overcorrecting” for a parked car.
Now their own (‼️) incident report cites “distracted/inattentive” driving.
Link:
KSDK’s Christine Byers reports several remarks by SLMPD:
1. Apparently SLMPD had no “reasonable suspicion of impairment,” so officers weren’t tested for drugs. (This is just *baffling*)
2. (Allegedly) no dash cam footage.
3. They continue to refuse to release body cam footage.

Gov Parson calls for release of SLMPD’s body cam footage from the Bar:PM incident.
@22ndCircuitSTL
’s Judge Perkins — assigned to Morris’ case — can and should order its release to the public.
NEW VIDEO: I asked Republican Gov. Mike Parson about the Bar:PM incident. He says it's important for law enforcement to be transparent.
"If you have the bodycam footage, I'm not sure why you wouldn't release it."

What a profoundly unnecessary and heavy-handed decision by WashU. The professors — even the ones who were only filming interactions — cannot access email or even meet in an off campus setting with students or staff.
This is just wholly and patently irresponsible. Wow.
Six faculty members from Washington University — four of whom were arrested at Saturday’s protest — are not only banned from campus, but are forbidden from speaking with Wash U staff and students even in off-campus settings.
A reminder from a friend:
“Reminder that 5 years ago this month [WashU] students had an encampment at WashU for over a month and zero police arrested anybody — this is a huge, wildly unnecessary escalation on the part of WashU and the state.”
The Biden administration must use the Higher Education Act to cancel student debt. They can still do this, despite today’s ruling. I found this video to be educational and recommend the watch.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court has struck down the federal student debt forgiveness program.
By a margin of 6-3 the Court has declared Biden's student's loan cancelation plan illegal.
But Biden can still cancel your debt, here's how:
Tonight it’ll be a week since SLMPD’s assault on Bar:PM.
To recap —
1. SLMPD refuses to apologize;
2.
@stlcao
refuses to drop the charges;
3.
@saintlouismayor
refuses to ask
@22ndCircuitSTL
to release body cam footage.
Pretty pathetic responses to blatant police misconduct.
Can’t stress enough how abnormal it is to get a bond (he’s on house arrest after 10 days’ treatment) w/ charges of ACA/threats near a school.
Jail isn’t for anyone w/ mental health issues. But let’s be clear: this is preferential treatment for a white cop from a powerful family.

If this grifter tries to invade another STL neighborhood, then Gravois Park residents will be there to help our neighbors stop it. My DM’s will be open in case anyone needs more info on the resources we developed & correspondence we have over this issue.
Some added thoughts:
1. SLMPD & the Circuit Attorney’s office treat people this way all the time…it’s just that it doesn’t usually also involve an SUV crashing into a bar.
2. Pay attention to who stayed silent.
3. Don’t let anyone say protesting & agitation don’t work.
One of the cops who abused Bar:PM’s owners has a history of abusing city residents.
And IMO the details of this revelation are even worse than RFT’s headline suggests.
This further undermines the credibility of
@stlcao
’s prosecution of Morris. They should drop all charges. Now.
Breaking news by
@RyanWKrull
: the police officer accused of giving Bar:PM's co-owner a black eye was previously accused of breaking multiple bones of an arrestee in 2019. Full story:
This is really well-reported. Chock full of analysis of how publicly funding stadiums doesn’t spur economic development. “It’s been studied to death” says one economist.
St. Louisans will take cues from
@KCTenants
and will oppose a taxpayer-funded handout to these billionaires.
New: The Cardinals are gearing up for a big ask for more public funding for Busch Stadium. The team president compares the potential scale of the project to two other franchises that each obtained more than $500M in public funds for stadium upgrades.
What the actual fuck. The mayors of U City, Clayton, and the City of St. Louis should absolutely be condemning this abhorrent and grotesque decision. Students are now UNHOUSED for participating in non-violent direction!!
@saintlouismayor
@MHarris4Clayton
@connerkerrigan
Officer Wallace exhibits absolutely despicable — not to mention illegal — behavior here. He should be fired.
Hey
@stlcao
, instead of prosecuting Morris, how about you investigate these officers for the crimes they very obviously committed???
Update on Bar:PM where a St. Louis police SUV slammed into our clients 'bar. Then officers handcuffed the owners, beat one up & charged him. Here's video of initial interaction that shows police had no basis to cuff James & escalated this whole thing (Please RT for visibility)
Really appreciate Javad noting not just that the arrest happened in literally 22 seconds — but also that the unlawful arrest was done by Wallace, who has a history of abusive behavior.
SLMPD very clearly won’t hold its own accountable.
And there’s no trust w/ no accountability.
Breaking: new footage from Bar:PM shows a St. Louis cop responding to the scene after police crashed their SUV into the LGBTQ bar -- and arresting the co-owner within 22 seconds
Breaking: St. Louis Police have now filed felony assault charges against a Bar:PM co-owner. The incident began when police crashed their SUV into the LGBTQ bar in the early hours this morning
Over 100 students and community members violently arrested at the WashU encampment tonight, including Jill Stein who was brutalized by a police bicycle.
Bar PM’s local reps
-State Sen Roberts,
-State Rep Butz &
-Alder Anne Schweitzer
have all been silent on SLMPD’s egregious actions.
Wish they’d give some sort of public indication that they know this all is terrifying for both Morris’ family & the wider STL queer community.
This is WILD.
The lawyer of an inmate w/ a “untreated, cantaloupe-sized hernia” shares a pic of his injury out of desperation to keep him safe, and in response
@saintlouismayor
bans attorneys from bringing phones into the city jail???
This ban needs to be rescinded IMMEDIATELY.
Yesterday, media outlets published photos of a detainee suffering serious medical neglect in the St. Louis City Justice Center. Today, jail officials have responded by banning lawyers from bringing phones when they visit their clients
A voter at the precinct at which I was volunteering today told me he’s not voting for Helen Petty because she supports trans folks. He proceeded to spew a bunch of hateful & conspiratorial rhetoric.

Kudos to those students and families in the Francis Howell district — and allies outside the district — for raising hell. Y’all did this!!

…weird remarks by
@saintlouismayor
spokesman.
Says she can’t call for release of body cam footage cause Bar:PM owners haven’t seen it.
So let them see it…you literally just let a select group of city officials see it in private??
Then…call for its public release??
C’mon 🙄
This isn’t enough.
@saintlouismayor
should condemn WashU for EVICTING STUDENTS FROM THEIR HOUSING as retaliation for participating in last Saturday’s protest.
Where is the basic sense of decency?
No student should have their housing taken away for non-violent direct action.
My administration is aware of the protest planned for tonight at
@SLU_Official
. I've been in contact with
@SLMPD
Chief Robert Tracy and SLU's administration to reiterate our city's support for the right to peaceful protest.
An insurance claim to fix the building can’t be filed w/out a police report, which SLMPD refuses to provide.
@saintlouismayor
’s administration is preventing Benear from solving the very problem they’re threatening citation for.
Any comment,
@connerkerrigan
?
"He said his insurance can’t move the process further because it can’t obtain a police report and the city will not return calls.[...]Benear said he shouldn’t have to pay for those repairs because it was a city cop who caused the damages."
@DavidAmelottiTV
To be abundantly clear, both the Buttigieg and Sanders campaigns are claiming victory with no officially reported results. Their campaigns are prioritizing trying to create winning conditions for themselves over respecting democracy.
Well-reported piece. And it gets at something that’s def been lost in the shuffle here: Mayor Tishaura Jones oversees SLMPD. She is complicit — more specifically, she is responsible — for the violence perpetrated against Steve Tamari & other non-violent protestors last Saturday.
St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Megan Green, a suspended Wash U professor, said Mayor Tishaura Jones should "absolutely" tell police to stand down at a demonstration planned for Wednesday night in city limits at St. Louis University.
No way in hell some D.C. asshole is gonna run an experiment in my neighborhood on monetizing invasive and unnecessary surveillance.
@saintlouismayor
@saintlouispres
@stlcomptroller
@AlderSonnier
residents were NOT informed of this. How do we stop this before it starts in 2024???
"In an effort to fight crime in St. Louis, a faith-based filmmaker from the Washington, D.C., area tells FOX 2 that drone patrols will soon be getting a test run in the Gravois Park neighborhood of south city."
Damn, a $790 million settlement for the St. Louis region??? Forget TIFs and tax abatements: suing billionaires and corporations who have treated St. Louis like shit seems to be the real way to get the investments we need for our city!

Let’s be clear that SLMPD blames a lack of community collaboration for things like their below-average rate of solving homicide cases. But how do they expect our trust when they violently resist accountability?
There’s no trust if there’s no accountability. Full stop.
Breaking: St. Louis Police have now filed felony assault charges against a Bar:PM co-owner. The incident began when police crashed their SUV into the LGBTQ bar in the early hours this morning
The same alders who feigned outrage over Alder Sonnier’s past efforts to decriminalize public urination/defecation in her unhoused bill of rights are gonna turn a blind eye to very same behavior by whiter, wealthier folks who descend upon Soulard this weekend.

Most affected nabes: Soulard, LaSalle Park, Benton Park, McKinley Hts

Just a reminder that of the four SLMPD officers who beat the shit out of Morris and then blatantly and grotesquely lied about it, one has been on the force for 29 years, while another has been on the force for 14 years.
This is def not the only monstrous thing they’ve done.
This statement blows. The deescalation done by electeds & non-electeds alike had to happen because
@saintlouismayor
’s administration escalated tensions Monday night, esp via SLMPD. Direct convos w/ the unhoused made it clear folks did not feel supported by the mayor.
Get real.
SLMPD argues it can’t release footage til the “investigation” — into the man they assaulted — is complete.
Yet, they show a group of select officials behind closed doors, anyway.
SLMPD shouldn’t get to decide.
@22ndCircuitSTL
should order SLMPD to publicly release the footage.
Strongly urging
@saintlouismayor
to use a large portion of the Kroenke settlement to (re)invest in Metro. Few things will provide better relief to working families than preventing further service cuts and curbing rising fares.
I dream of a world where the only options on any given ballot are candidates who are universally understood to be in enthusiastic support of the trans community.
Gonna keep beating this drum: there is no trust if there is no accountability.
And these incidents beg the question: if SLMPD chooses to lie about stuff like this, then what else do they regularly lie about?
@connerkerrigan
does the Mayor have an update for this congregation?
New: St. Louis Police crashed into a church sign -- and then covered their tracks to the point that the church's pastor assumed the damage was vandalism. Months later, he's still waiting for answers
Former Alderwoman Rice is right.
SLMPD committed crimes this week — and then tried to cover it up w/ lies, a refusal to drug test their own & even more physical violence.
They finally showed some video to select officials behind closed doors.
That’s not enough. Release it all.
No Police. No Prisons. Is that what St. Louis needs?
Our volunteers are out knocking on doors today, while our opponent is out knocking on doors with a group calling for a “society free of police and the prison industrial complex.” 1/
Your primer on Alder Sonnier's three bills supporting unhoused folks, which will be heard at tomorrow night's Nov 1st HUDZ committee meeting:
1. The three bills are BB126, BB127, & BB128.
2. The unhoused crisis has ballooned in our city. 20% of SLPS students are unhoused.
She attended PPSLR’s action after Roe was gutted.
She tweets this.
She voted for an abortion ban in the MO House.
She ran for BofA Pres. as pro-choice.
She has relationships, not opinions.
She values power over consistency.
The more her influence wanes, the better for STL.
Just a reminder that
@STL4Ward
has been a consistent voice for more responsible use of tax incentives and still won one of the most competitive aldermanic races in the city tonight.
Progressives don’t need to cave to big developers to win. Plain and simple.
2/3/23, Full BOA, Bret Narayan (Alderman ward 24,

SLMPD *still* hasn’t said if the officers who beat Morris took a breathalyzer test, or if they’ll face any consequences.
And as his attorney notes, there’s a history of SLMPD drunk driving.
We need more than sanitized statements from our electeds rn. We need calls for change.
Someone who is unhoused was the one who decided to start the encampment at City Hall vs somewhere else in order to bring attention to our housing crisis. They introduced themself to me and my friends last night.
But ok, go ahead and rob unhoused folks of their agency, I guess 🤷♂️
He’s not a clinician or a social scientist or a social worker or a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a public health professional or a policy expert on homelessness.
He’s just some dude, and here he’s offering a nicely packaged sound bite that is actually fundamentally cruel.
I’ll be blunter: Alders Anne Schweitzer and Michael Browning were the main reasons Alder Sonnier’s three bills to support our unhoused neighbors didn’t pass through HUDZ in the fall.
This blood is on their cowardly hands.
Advocates are reporting 3-4+ unhoused neighbors have perished this week. Many others have severe frostbite requiring amputation. This is not how a humane society treats their most vulnerable. We need more low barrier shelter/housing. “NIMBYism can’t continue driving policy.
Y’all WE DID IT. He’s getting his interpreter and his pretrial detention hearing TOMORROW instead of Oct 11th!!
This doesn’t cement his freedom from the CJC pending trial, but he’s only charged w/ 1 count of burglary — a nonviolent offense — so odds are decent he’ll get a bond!

Wow this is striking — Building division aide John Carrico is quoted directly as saying SLMPD is basically just completely unaccountable.
“Nobody messes with them.”
Is anyone in our city gov’t willing to prove him wrong?
@saintlouismayor
.
@stlcao
. Please do literally anything.
We caught wind that the St. Louis Building Commissioner might be paying a visit to the owners of Bar:PM to apologize for a 'threatening' letter that suggested the building could be condemned. Here's what we found when we showed up:
Y’ALL.
First, this is a LIE. Perkins was told on 9/18 an interpreter was needed. Didn’t order one. We were there, we took notes!!
Second, did you see they buried the lede?? He has to WAIT IN JAIL for 15 MORE DAYS — til Oct 11th — for an interpreter he was owed RIGHT AWAY?!?!
The record reflects the defendant’s 9/18 hearing was continued b/c could not stay awake in court. At that time, there was no indication an interpreter was required. At defendant’s 9/25 hearing, the court ordered an interpreter fluent in Malaysian to appear on 10/11. Documents:
Assaulted by officers when trying to document extensive damage they caused his business.
@saintlouismayor
should ensure they’re fired, but instead what’s probs gonna happen is they’ll stay on the force, and taxpayers will foot the bill for a (obvs deserved) civil settlement 😡🙄
St. Louis Police crashed into an LGBTQ bar in Carondelet last night -- and then they arrested its owner.
@RyanWKrull
spoke to the bar's other owner, who says he was also cuffed after pushing back on demands to show ID
Let’s be clear: these are *felony* assault charges! Morris could lose his right to vote. Morris and his husband’s economic security would absolutely be threatened. Morris could have to serve time in our deadly city jail. These charges need to be DISMISSED.
@stlcao
wtf???
To clarify:
1. A
@stlcao
prosecutor can agree to a recognizance bond, and if they agree to that it’s almost certain Judges Woodiest or Dierker will let him out.
2. One of the judges can give bond, even if
@stlcao
won’t consent to pretrial release.

*multiple* videos contradict SLMPD officers’ accounts.
@stlcao

And then

Still nothing from

Talk about cringe. Hopefully Mr. Carter’s loved ones didn’t have to read that post.

Now they should drop ALL the charges. SLMPD officers were the aggressors, full stop!!
The prosecutor just called us, and said that they will be amending the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. But that won’t be enough. We have video that shows that the police were the aggressors. And Chad did nothing wrong. 3/

Not to be that guy…but the mayor is just plain wrong about Sonnier’s bill conflicting w/ state law?? State law clearly allows encampments with conditions (citation: ). And as the 3rd pic shows, the only categorical prohibition is on state-owned land.
🤔🤔
Some stuff I’ve seen/heard tonight at the encampment:
1. One parks/rec/forestry employee I spoke with prior to the initial sweep privately told me he thought the eviction was useless because “they’d just set up camp across the street.”
