Sweetie everyone’s already washing their hands five+ times a day, covering their face, not shaking hands + avoiding bars. Not only are we already here, you’re all Muslim. Salam brother.
Landed in Honolulu, & while waiting at baggage claim a sheriff with a canine had the dog sniff people & when he got to me loudly said “go girl, find it, find the terrorist.” My husband & I were taken aback. I’ve been sniffed by K-9 units at airports before but never heard this
Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly. Notably, there wasn't a mass outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence, which could all too easily have happened. And while GW Bush was a terrible president, to his credit he tried to calm prejudice, not feed it 2/
Businesses can sack Muslim women wearing the hijab headscarf if they work face-to-face with customers or if the wearing of the religious clothing causes workplace conflicts, the EU’s highest court has ruled
Without doing any digging or questioning I have no idea if this was targeted or not or if it’s routine to just…say that. But these are the kinds of interactions I remember constantly experiencing & having to question post 9/11. & I can’t believe we’re here again.
Here's our story on it: Nearly two years after the

This is a HUGE deal for Muslims. So many people use this app for prayer times, Qibla direction, etc & they’re selling location data that military & other contractors have access to. If you work at Muslim Pro & want to talk to me anonymously pls reach out to me. Signal # in bio.
Muslim Pro, the Muslim prayer app with over 98 million downloads is one of the apps connected to a wide-ranging supply chain that sends ordinary people's personal data to brokers, contractors, and the military.
I hate that I'm shocked but damn
New: Uber and Lyft drivers are preparing to strike next week after the most recent round of pay cuts. This isn’t the 1st strike but this time LA drivers are pulling from the playbook of traditional movements & also using tech to better organize drivers
A Louisville police officer used a data-combing software called Accurint which is owned by Lexis Nexis to gather info about women then share it with hackers who'd use it to break into their Snapchat accounts to find explicit photos to exploit them with.
An entire generation of Muslim children grew up post 9/11 knowing legitimately nothing else but a country that hated them and wanted them to go back to their countries. BUT OK PAUL.
A company that once sold cattle monitoring devices uses ankle monitors, facial & voice recognition to surveil 180k+ immigrants on behalf of ICE. Today we’re sharing the 1st in a 3-part investigation into BI Inc, an arm of private prison corp The Geo Group.
@latimes
One employee, a staff engineer named Sophie Haskins, gave her notice on Monday specifically citing the contract and said Github “shows no indication of canceling the contract,” which she wrote was “morally unacceptable.”
Muslims in the West don’t get to be tired/exasperated after e/ attack. We’re forced to stay alert bc our mere existence is questioned at the highest levels of government & discourse. This isn’t new & if you think it is you’re just starting to pay attention
::reads the room::
I guess since you’re all here this is a good a time as any to announce some ~professional~ news. Last Friday was my last day at
@Recode
. Next week, I’ll be starting at the
@latimes
as an enterprise reporter focusing on tech accountability.
NEW: Github is doubling down on its defense of its ICE contract, saying cancelling it “could actually hurt the very people we all want to help," in a memo
@latimes
obtained. Employees are frustrated & one resigned on Monday over the continued work with ICE
A Doordash driver didn’t get paid sick leave even though a MD said he had to self-quarantine. Instacart workers want hazard pay. Amazon driver says he can’t get the $2/hr raise every1 is supposed to unless his rating is high. They say they’re not protected
An asylum seeker spent 6 months in ICE detention unable to communicate with anyone bc AI translation tools didn't understand his dialect. His asylum app also had discrepancies: His home city, Belo Horizonte, was translated literally to beautiful horizon.
NEW: When SF chose Scoot for its scooter pilot, it was partly bc they promised to serve areas beyond downtown, esp the 7 designated communities of concern. But Scoot has drawn a red line around parts of 2 of those neighborhoods: Tenderloin & Chinatown
NEW: In what is likely a 1st cross company effort, a group of Google and Amazon workers are coordinating an effort to demand the companies cancel its $1.2 billion contract with the Israeli military. We published the letter here: We condemn Project Nimbus
Thank you all for your prayers. My aunt, who was a nurse on the front lines in Queens, passed away Saturday evening from Covid-19. She was only 54. I tried to write something to make sense of it.
New from me: Muslims have been the subject of mass government surveillance for years, at times, for simply practicing their faith or participating in faith-based activities. That's why Muslim Pro's sale of location info felt like such a violation
Muslims, we don’t have to do the thing where we try to defend our religion and distinguish it from extremists. They know, they don’t care! We’ve done it for years, it didn’t matter. We don’t have to accept that we’re one of the few identity groups that has to condemn extremism
I am a New Yorker. 19 years ago, as a small child, my second memory - after being called a slur an hour after it happened - was of our masjid praying for a Hindu auntie in our area who was taken for Muslim, and run over.
This is why I hate the NY/America came together narrative.
I’m like laughing because 9/11 was SUCH a defining moment for Muslims that as a community we’ve worked to dismantle the idea that our existence in the US can only be described in the context of a terrorist attack so I guess Paul is telling us that it’s working
NEW from me: Ring wanted to prove that it was an effective crime fighting tool, so it turned to a group of brand ambassadors.
They were LAPD officers. At least 100 officers got free devices or discounts & were urged to promote Ring.
i'm glad i'm not a media reporter anymore bc i won't have to try to explain how a company that cut its employees pay, furloughed them once a week for a few months and laid a bunch of people off then bought a whole other company all in the same year.
It makes 0 sense that they didn’t ask the MANY hijabbi freelance writers out there to write this or test out the swimwear hijab. Why is the perspective and experience of this non Muslim, non hijabbi woman trying out a hijab while swimming at all relevant??
@latimes
This is just another example of the newfound sense of activism among tech workers, who are willing to publicly challenge their employers in an unprecedented way. Over the next month (& forever bc we love labor), we'll be looking closely at the last year of tech worker activism.
NEW: Instacart workers have seen spikes in demand but say the "pay doesn't add up," Interviews w/ workers & receipts we reviewed show they're paid about the same to do 2-3 orders at a time as they are for 1 order, despite the extra time & labor required
The amount of hoops many journalists are jumping through to soften, downplay or otherwise caveat what Israel is doing and has been doing to Palestinians is depraved. Again all you literally have to do is open your journalism 101 books. Use clear, precise, accurate language.
The LA Times is a newsroom full of dedicated journalists who routinely punch above their weight and have remained loyal to a publication in spite of years of leadership or ownership failings. To see it gutted in this way (again!) is devastating. What's the freaking plan?
NEW: Clearview AI is facing a new lawsuit, this time in California. The lawsuit alleges the company violates all Californians' privacy & can chill their political speech & activity.
NEW:

@Github

Notably, my parents had to pull me out of my majority-muslim private school in 2001 because of daily anti-Muslim protests, multiple BOMB threats, and a general societal pressure to assimilate or face the consequences of prejudice. But you're right, overall pretty calm.

reported on Tuesday offered 'real-time Uighur warnings' + race detection
NEW: LAPD shut down its flagship predictive policing programs amid public outcry over the feedback loop it created which experts say led to the over-policing of Black & brown communities. Newly public documents show its replacement shares much of the flaws
The DHS request was an administrative subpoena from ICE asking for IP address, street address & payment sources associated with their Google account. But critics argue bc administrative subpoenas aren’t court ordered, Google shouldn’t hand over any info
Personal plea, my aunt who is in the hospital due to Covid-19, has been on a ventilator for a bit now & is dealing with a few other complications from the virus is getting worse. Please keep her in your prayers.
Eid Mubarak to my Muslim brothers & sisters. May we all one day live in a world where our lives and rights are valued equally & we can live, breathe, exist & practice our faith without being ethnically cleansed, detained, surveilled, or stripped of our humanity.
ICE also uses Accurint. So this is your daily reminder that Lexis Nexis (yes the software that librarians and journalists use) is a databroker that ALSO contracts with ICE and helps them get around sanctuary policies.
GitHub execs: we heard from non profits that “one of the greatest challenges facing immigrants is a lack of technology at ICE and related agencies”
@RAICEStexas
: Uh no
Github bosses claim in this story that nonprofits want ICE to have better tech. We can assure you that is not the case. ICE must be abolished & those responsible for human rights abuses brought to justice.
Thank you
@sophaskins
& Github workers for speaking out.
#NoTechForICE
The Nakba was a casual "migration" of Palestinians?! CNN is running its reports by the IDF before publication? How can I ever in good conscience defend the media to people who have turned to unauthoritative sources instead of journalists when this is what we're doing?
This is genuinely something that Amazon drivers have complained to me about, saying they’ve had cops called on them or been watched suspiciously esp if they’re POC in an affluent neighborhood. Amazon won’t give them uniforms bc they’re contractors.
Message To Amazon: Now that you have regular people making your home deliveries.. Maybe they should wear a Vest with AMAZON DELIVERY on it..... I almost shot a MF creeping up to my crib last night.... Just sayin.
The ~ can you tell my Uber driver to shut up ~ feature is insulting. This isn’t really directed at Uber, it’s the people who asked for it. They’re not robots you can just shut off. It’s their car, you’re not even paying them directly, & they spend all day driving.
Immigrants in a privately run ICE surveillance program upload a selfie to an app called SmartLink with little idea what happens to their data. “It’s exactly like my [ankle monitor], but now it’s in my phone,” 1 person said she was told. Here’s what we know
Amazon workers also said they were being told to stay only 3 ft apart, not 6 until recently. One complained they didn’t get any protective gear so he made a mask out of a paper towel and rubber bands.
A Facebook Executive shared a post calling Muslims a "degenerate community." When she was called out on it she was like lol my bad I didn't mean to denigrate Islam. via
@PranavDixit
ICE works with a private company to monitor 180k+ immigrants using ankle monitors & face recognition. The program lacks oversight & the tech is faulty causing immigrants to suffer physically/mentally & feel constantly afraid. Part 2 of our investigation:

Sources say the employees are trying to figure out what their next move is & are considering turning to the open source community to apply pressure to leadership. But organizing a distributed/remote workforce comes with its challenges.
Barring anything absolutely wild happening between now and Thursday, this story on how unfair ratings can dramatically lower Instacart shoppers’ earnings is my last big story of the year. And it’s part of a series of stories I did on IC the last few months
Getting married during the pandemic was weird. But 1 of the weirdest parts was buying my reception dress from Pakistan over WhatsApp. Turns out there’s an entire marketplace of India & Pakistan based clothing brands using WhatsApp to make sales. New ->
New from me: Lyft pays drivers who rent a car through its Express Drive program less per mile than all its other drivers. That makes it hard for some struggling drivers to offset the weekly rent, which start at $219.
You know what may have helped when I found out I was paid less all other mostly male senior reporters at my site? A union contract! Instead it was 1 of the reasons I decided to look for another job. I left Vox Media. Give everyone else a fair contract
Another detail in here: We saw internal slack messages showing sales staff appearing to celebrate a $56K upgrade to the ICE contract.
The message read in part: 🚨 🦅 🇺🇸 $56K UPGRADE AT DHS ICE 🚨 🦅 🇺🇸
5 people reacted with an American flag emoji
Today marks the 3rd week Instacart workers are striking over lack of hazard pay & protections during coronavirus. The strike builds on years-long frustrations with low pay & lack of transparency. We found out co policies all but ensure workers don’t get paid extra for extra work
NEW: Instacart workers have seen spikes in demand but say the "pay doesn't add up," Interviews w/ workers & receipts we reviewed show they're paid about the same to do 2-3 orders at a time as they are for 1 order, despite the extra time & labor required
NEW: A WhatsApp feature that generates images in response to users’ searches returns a picture of a gun or a boy with a gun when prompted with the terms “Palestinian”, “Palestine” or “Muslim boy Palestinian”, the Guardian has learned.
NEW: I dove deep into what it’s like to be an hourly employee for Instacart. Shoppers are measured weekly for how many seconds it takes to pick each item, how many refunds they have to issue for out of stock goods & have 4 mins to accept orders b4 getting a strike against them
Black and brown reporters: "It's not ok that governments are killing Black and brown people."
Media: "You know what you might be too personally invested to cover this..."

Since it’s now appeared in print, I might as well say it here - I’ve resigned from GitHub and my last day will be tomorrow.
Doing business with ICE is not okay.
To keep their posts from being blocked on FB & IG, some misspell “Palestine” or “Israel”; others intersperse posts about Gaza with images from their everyday lives. IG users are advising followers to add a COVID-19-themed “Get Vaccinated” sticker.
And while we're here Equifax is also a databroker that offers a service ICE said it needed to get around sanctuary policies “Due to policy or legislative changes, [Ice] has experienced an increase in the # of...agencies...that do not share information."
FWIW, I've sent inquiries to several companies incl. Google & Meta about plans for responding to law enforcement requests for user data in abortion-related investigations (& any plans to change data retention policies which goes hand in hand w/ this) & so far I've heard nothing
Have to wonder how Google, Meta (Facebook), Amazon, other technology companies respond to subpoenas around future abortion law enforcement in certain states.
We reviewed an email Google sent to a user notifying them that the DHS requested their user info. In it, Google said they have 7 days to respond with a court ordered motion to quash otherwise they may hand over their info
NEW from
@SamTLevin
: New documents show how LAPD targeted Nipsey Hussle’s street corner and store. The LAPD designated his store as an anchor point or a point of interest as part of its controversial predictive policing program Operation Laser
New: Uber and Lyft drivers represented by Shannon Liss Riordan are asking a Cali judge to issue an injunction forcing the companies to comply with AB5 & afford their workers employee status/benefits including paid sick leave given the current Covid19 outbreak
Clearview AI is being sued by 4 individuals including
@stevenrenderos
as well as
@ConMijente
&
@NorResist
who allege Clearview AI “engages in the widespread collection of California residents’ images and biometric information without notice or consent.”
“When I look at the... team who are making $100,000 to $150,000 a year, and they get to go home without worrying about if they’re going to get paid, that bugs me,” a warehouse worker said. “Bc we’re still here and if we go home, we don’t get paid.”
@latimes
The memo also gave some more details about Github's contract saying "ICE has set up instances within the Homeland Security Investigations arm, M&A, and ERO divisions." The co did not comment beyond referring us back to their original blogpost
