Have just woken in Doha to hear the shocking news that Grant Wahl has passed. The game in America was lucky to be served by such a brilliant journalist and , in my time covering the US men’s and women’s teams , a kind and helpful companion. I can’t quite believe this. RIP Grant.
When FIFA move to a 48-team World Cup in 2026, the format is absolutely crucial to get right. Anything that dilutes the levels of jeopardy and drama should be rejected. So forget 3-team groups. Horrible idea.
From a strictly neutral view , it feels at times as if VAR is using a fine tooth comb to find a reason to disallow goals. That Liverpool one would have stood in every single year pre 2020. Overthinking it all.
Man Utd , Man City , Chelsea , Arsenal , Spurs and Liverpool are facing a mutiny from disgusted fans. Owners of these clubs obviously neither know nor care about the history and tradition of English football. “ Super” ? More like scandalous. Hang your heads in shame.
End of an eighth World Cup for me. Stories and shocks everywhere you look. Still the greatest football show on the planet. Sadly overshadowed for many of us in the media by the premature loss of a great colleague and journalist , Grant Wahl.
Think what we are possibly seeing in Doha is a minor changing of the guard in world football. Rising forces in Asia . Africa and … yes , USA. Good for the game.
Cavani ban is draconian . He used the offending word as the term of affection it is in his homeland and then withdrew the tweet when situation was explained to him. A slap on the wrists and fine would have been common sense.
Am thinking back to a lovely night in Manhattan when Grant invited me and
@AlexiLalas
round to dinner and we talked and laughed and put the world to rights. That is a poignant memory now.
Suggested law change for next season. Only the captain can approach the referee. Anyone else gets booked. Must stop this mass pressurising of officials - often aimed at getting opponents booked or sent off.
Iran World Cup squad announcement delayed amid reported pressure on coach to drop star striker Azmoun and other players sympathetic to protests over repression of women in Iran. Big story.
Better team won the football match. Errors in both penalty areas costly for USA. Third goal crucial cos USA were threatening an equaliser at time. Why didn’t Reyna start ? Far more guile with him.
Great to have football back. Please cut all commentators bit of slack. Often working from home off difficult TV pictures and with as many as 32 players used. Doing our best.
Crowd for Man City v Brighton FA Cup semi at Wembley - a disappointing 71,000. Pompey v Sunderland attracted 85,000 in Checkatrade Trophy last week !!!
Anyone who believes Arsenal should have put on an all-singing , all-dancing display away to Manchester City has never managed a football team. Arteta’s job was to get something from the game , and he did. At this stage only results matter.
Banning FA Cup replays ? Ye Gods. This is pathetic. Let’s get it right. Most clubs in the Premier League don’t play enough games. The FA started killing the Cup the year they allowed Man Utd to opt out. This decision is horrible for EFL clubs.
The petition attempting to stop Anthony Taylor refereeing Chelsea in future is a total waste of time, and frankly a disgrace. One of our very best officials just had a bad day. Tip of big bad iceberg if clubs start trying to influence who refs them.
An unpopular question , but has the Premier League become a monster devouring everything around it ? It’s not healthy for the game if Europe’s other top leagues just become breeding grounds for PL clubs. Jan spending in PL - £815. In La Liga - £25m.
Mystery how Jack Grealish could have been so sparkling against Wales - and then not play another minute in the next two games , even with the team crying out for a creator tonight.
Hate to say it , but Europa final was a festival of what’s wrong with football. Players sprinting to ref to contest every decision, rampant gamesmanship, awful behaviour from benches. Law makers need to act. Sevilla won a truly ugly game - but football lost.
Keep asking this question. Is football a better or worse spectacle with VAR ? The on-field decision was goal for Man U. Was there a clear and obvious error in that. I’d argue NOT.
There are 71 clubs outside the Premier League in England. They are the real ones in the firing line from this crisis. Reliant on gate money of which there’s none. Coverage of their plight pretty sparse.
I can reveal that Paul Dempsey’s commentary from home of Dortmund v Schalke in Bundesliga yesterday on
@btsportfootball
was nearly halted when a man from Tesco supermarket kept banging in his front door. Not much time to get the groceries between those 4 goals !!
When this is all over , let’s stop giving gongs to celebrities, civil servants and tycoons and give them to the real heroes who save lives. Someone at every major hospital in UK should be knighted and nurses paid a lot more.
Rising tide against VAR. Sixteen months of it in England , and I’m pretty sure a poll of players , managers and fans would vote to scrap it. The core idea of correcting only MAJOR errors has been lost.
Darwin Nunez would be an exciting replacement for Sadio Mane at Liverpool. Quick , dangerous , good in air , likes to attack from wide left. Also freshens up squad , which is important.
Is today’s Tuchel love-in a little premature ? Who is to say Chelsea would not have taken 7 points from those last three games under Frank Lampard ? Admittedly a fine start , but let’s see if he matches Lampard’s top 4 finish.
USA deserve to progress based on those 3 group games. Congratulations to coach and players. It’s not easy at all. Netherlands is tough but they let you play and USA are in with a shout.
Who’d have thought it when Chelsea fans were ridiculing him a couple of seasons back, but Jorginho has to be a Ballon D’Or contender after winning the Champions League and Euros in 2021.
Much deserved praise for the likes of Crystal Dunn , Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle. But how about Abby Dahlkemper in her first World Cup for USA ? Cool, composed, consistently good defending.
Liverpool fans must be feeling wistful and sad to see the likeable Sadio Mane go. What a signing he turned out to be. Surely one of the best in the club’s history.
Why are the Premier League not adding on all the wasted time , as at World Cup ? If they did , players would quickly get the message that time wasting is …. er, a waste of time.
Remember we were told how yellow cards would be issued if two or more players surrounded the referee to dispute a decision. How many of the 7 or 8 Man City players who crowded round Simon Hooper at the end of the Spurs game got booked ?
Just a little indicator of what life is like in the lower divisions.
@thetimes
ten pages of sport today failed to mention Portsmouth or Mansfield being promoted last night. I get it might not mean much in the wider scheme of things - but not even a few words ? Really ?
No way should US team be rotating in World Cup qualifiers. Decide the best XI and stick to it. Treat every opponent with big respect. Not a time to take liberties.
World Cup XI -
Martinez
Hakimi Stones Gvardiol Behich
Amrabat Fernandez
Messi McAllister Griezmann
Mbappe.
Yes that’s Aziz Behich of Dundee Utd and Australia. He was a revelation … and a big reason they defied the odds to make the last 16.
Here’s the problem with believing “ assist” stats. In the World Cup, Griezmann got one for playing a ten yard backward pass for Tchouameni to score from 25 yards against England. Another thing - you could create 10 good chances but get 0 assists if they’re not converted .
Sad to hear of the death of one of boxing’s true greats - Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Initially sidetracked and ignored , he carried a bitter but brilliant intensity in his long middleweight reign and his pulsating “war” with Tommy Hearns is the greatest fight I ever covered.
Seriously , would any football lover on this planet mind if we never saw another of those hideous offside “lines” imposed on screen ? Just doesn’t feel right. If you can’t see it with naked eye , it’s level .
That Dutch free kick is the most innovative since Zanetti’s brilliant 1998 goal for Argentina. against England. Cool and clever and what a time to unveil it !
A final for the ages - and , on the day, the right winners. Argentina dominated that game for so long. Travesty had they lost it. Fancy getting a hat trick in the final and losing. Feel for Mbappe on that score. But Messi has given game so much he deserves this crowning moment.
No question , USA by far better team in first half. England flat and sloppy. Feeling that US needed to turn this period on top into a lead. Have to reckon England will rethink and improve after break.
I would not want to be Anthony Gordon whenever he next plays at Goodison. Talk about leaving a club under a cloud. He really has disrespected the club who taught him everything. Get a new advisor , Anthony.
If you support a club outside the top two divisions, no point buying most national newspapers. 9 pages of sport in Daily Mail on Tuesday and not a line on the top-of-table L1 match between Portsmouth and Bolton , watched by nearly 20,000 and televised live. Pathetic.
Looking ahead to Argentina game tonight , impossible to get that picture of their players gracelessly taunting defeated Dutch rivals out of my head. Makes them a hard team to like. Karma comes round. Well sometimes.
USA getting a lesson in finishing. Also playing too slow tempo to make much happen going forward. Dutch happy to sit in, await errors and break. It’s working.
Thank goodness FIFA have kept the next World Cup to 32 teams. They should forget 48 completely. It’s the World Cup , not a village tombola where everyone gets a go.
Palace away is a very tough match for Liverpool , especially coming off a hard midweek game. They don’t look the same team on the road this season. Only one away win. Could be 1-1 as with Spurs game at Selhurst.
You know the wonderful thing about football ? The happiness it can bring to people. You’d have to be hard-hearted ( or a supporter of a relegation rival ) not to be touched by the tears of joy and sheer relief of Everton fans.
Sports Editors at most ( not all ) daily papers should hang heads in shame for pathetic , make that non-existent, coverage of Pompey v Derby, top two in League One and with far bigger fan bases than some of the Premier League teams they cover so religiously.
How very sad to hear of the passing of my old ESPN colleague Paul Mariner. Such a superbly stylish England striker and very good bloke. He will be much missed.
Many say they don’t want VAR anymore. Fair enough. It’s a valid viewpoint. But if the title or relegation gets decided against your team on the final day by a blatantly offside goal missed by officials , do you shrug shoulders and say “that’s life “?
Biggest issue for commentators on the World Cup Final. Danger of trying a bit too hard. Good luck to all my colleagues who have the honour of calling todays game.
Son’s red card should be rescinded. It was a foul. No more. The injury was just a horrible accident with Gomes’ studs just stuck in turf. The injury was not a result of the challenge.
Quite bizarre. It’s like England are playing for a draw in the belief a point is fine in wider context of group. Dangerous game. USA playing very well.
Martial had to go. But Lamela’s reaction as if shot was truly embarrasing and sums up much of what’s wrong in football. His play acting should not go unpunished. Horrendous to watch.
Just watching back that Everton v Palace game. The Ayew challenge had to be a red card. Amazed VAR didn’t get involved. Clear case of “ excessive force endangering opponent “.
Just before anyone starts a big inquest , England did not lose a single game in normal or extra time at Euro 2020. Next step is to add a tad more attacking zest.
