Official Twitter of the Chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept.,
@impdnews
, which has a proud history of service to the Indianapolis community.
It is with a broken heart and a shaken resolve that I announce the loss of
@IMPDnews
Officer Breann Leath (B231) who today was shot and killed responding to a domestic call. Please keep Officer Leath’s family and ours in your prayers.
#CommunityHero
As a 30-year law enforcement veteran, I cannot understand or justify the actions captured on video in Minneapolis. Police officers swear an oath to protect the lives of our community members - including those in our custody. 1/3
I am truly humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next Chief of
@IMPDnews
. I know my love for this community will only grow as I work to build further bridges of trust, make our city safer, and support the officers who protect and serve every day.
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that IMPD Officer Justin Keehn passed away this afternoon in an off-duty motorcycle accident in Morgan County.
Justin will be remembered as a loving husband and father and a dedicated public servant.
"As the Police Chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, I respect the judicial process however, this sentencing decision fails to deliver the justice that Officer Leath, her son, and her family deserve.”
For most, the 4th of July is a day of celebration. But for many
@impdnews
officers, it’s a day of leaving behind their families to serve Indianapolis. Thank you to all the officers who are spending their holiday keeping us safe.
An incredibly sad and emotional day as
@IMPDnews
and a grateful city prepare to honor the sacrifice of Officer Breann Leath

Because it is only when police and residents work in partnership that our communities become safer places for all.
My prayers are with the friends and family of George Floyd, all who call Minneapolis home, and all of the officers who do the right things on a daily basis. 3/3
One incident should not define the many women and men behind the badge, or take away from the courageous work of good officers. Nevertheless, law enforcement officers have a duty to build trust and respect with our neighbors every day. 2/3
THANK YOU! The outpouring of support for Officer Leath has been nothing short of amazing and appreciated. As a city prepares to honor Officer Leath's service and sacrifice know that every single expression is truly appreciated. Following

I want to acknowledge the officers who responded today. They fulfilled their oath.
IMPD respects the right of people to protest. However, when people illegally obstruct traffic, we will take action.
We urge people to peacefully and lawfully exercise their rights.
A total of 14 people were arrested this morning due to obstructing traffic.
Several of the individuals arrested were not Indianapolis residents.
There were no injuries reported.
Every day, Indianapolis first responders put on their uniforms to better the city we all love. Thank you to the women and men of

This morning, IMPD Homicide Detectives arrested the individual believed to be responsible for the murder of 6 people and non-fatal shooting of 1 juvenile on Adams Street.
The IMPD has now met the over 189 standards to be recognized nationally as an Accredited Law Enforcement Agency through CALEA, The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement. A first for the the department. A three year process. Gold standard
Our goal with adding curfew enforcement to our violence reduction plan is to send a clear message: if parents refuse to fulfil their responsibility, then the IMPD will do what is necessary to keep our children safe and alive.
Happy Father’s Day to ALL
@IMPDnews
fathers especially those working today. Thank you to these men who give up their Father’s Day to ensure you have a safe Father’s Day - Thank you!
Thankful that
@IMPDnews
Officer was not more seriously wounded today. Tonight he’s at home surrounded by family and friends that love and support him. Collectively we must work together to address violence directed at anyone!
Today, I announced that no-knock warrants will no longer be authorized for IMPD officers. Ending this practice for is a significant step, one that has been championed by the men and women of this agency, as well as the neighbors they serve.
Great conversations with our

East District late-shift team. These guardians are dedicated to protecting you while you sleep. I’ll be spending my Friday night out on patrol with them.

Thanks to the

officer. Thankfully, the officer wasn’t seriously injured and, over the next several weeks, is expected to make a full recovery. Our prayers are with the involved officer and his family.
As we continue to look for creative ways to serve our citizens here in Indianapolis, we believe that Beat Policing is a step in the right direction. We remain dedicated to reducing crime in our communities. Proud of the men and women who serve our city.
Thank you to all the families and friends that joined for today’s 16th Recruit Class graduation.
@IndyMayorJoe
commitment to add additional resources to move
@IMPDnews
back to community based beat policing is evident.
Due to input, collaboration, trust, and effort in partnership w/our community, in 2018

homicide detectives have arrested nearly 60 suspects for homicides 47 in 2018 and 12 from 2017 which exceeds last years total arrests leading to nearly a 70% clearance rate for 2018

Thankful this painful chapter has now closed for Tommy, Emory, and Officer Majors.
With this sentencing behind them, my hope is for them to continue to heal and move forward.
Today's sentencing sends a strong message that attacks on our officers will never be tolerated.
Today’s sentencing is the culmination of years of cooperative efforts among local and federal law enforcement partners in Marion County. Profiting from crime and violence in our community will not be tolerated.
Community is so important to addressing crime and disorder in neighborhoods and engagement is how we start. Great time
