IIHS is upping the speed of its front crash prevention tests and expanding it to include targets representing motorcycles and large trucks.
IIHS has completed tests of the 2021 Tesla Model 3's new camera-based front crash prevention system, which rates superior for vehicle-to-vehicle interactions and advanced for pedestrian interactions. Details:
🆕 IIHS strengthens requirements for TOP SAFETY PICK awards.
Check out the list of 2023 award winners:
As a result of the tougher criteria, only 48 models qualify for 2023 awards, including 28 that earn the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+.
The Rivians have arrived at the Vehicle Research Center.
Testing on these vehicles begins next week, and the R1T crew cab is first to be tested in the updated side crash test.

To clarify, IIHS did not assemble a "Top 5" headlight list. Full ratings for the 2019 Model 3, which does earn a good headlight rating, can be found here:
Updated data show that rates of injury claims related to the drivers and passengers of electric vehicles were more than 40% lower than for identical conventional models over 2011-19.
We can't rely on the promise of future technologies to bail us out of the road safety epidemic we're in. Proven, low-tech strategies already exist to reduce long-standing problems like impaired driving and speeding. We choose not to widely implement them.
The 2018 Lexus RC earns a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award when equipped with its good-rated base headlight package. The available premium headlights performed worse in our testing, earning only a marginal rating.
🆕 🏆 A good rating in the updated moderate overlap front test boosts the 2024 Rivian R1T crew cab pickup to TOP SAFETY PICK+ status.

You can be in the safest vehicle in the world, but failing to buckle up means your car's safety systems can't function as intended. Did you know that about 10% of people seated up front and about 25% seated in the back skip the belt?
Which cars are deadliest for drivers in other vehicles? For the first time, IIHS has calculated rates of other-driver deaths, with pickups, SUVs, and muscle cars taking many of the top spots.
"Driving 70 instead of 65 saves a driver at best 6½ minutes on a 100-mile trip," says IIHS's Chuck Farmer. "Before raising speed limits, state lawmakers should consider whether that potential time savings is worth the additional risk to lives."

We don't have the resources to test a relatively low sales volume vehicle. Tesla could nomiate the X and reimburse IIHS for the vehicles. Otherwise it's a $400,000 program for us, which could be better spent on mainstream vehicles or research.
A study of U.S. truck drivers found those younger than 19 had a rate of fatal crashes per mile traveled 339% higher than those of drivers of all ages, and drivers ages 19-20 had a crash rate 516% higher than those of all ages.
With the trucking industry facing a shortage of qualified drivers, the US government is setting up a program that will allow people as young as 18 to drive semi trucks.
A year ago, we kicked off 2021 with an updated side crash test of the 2021 Nissan Rogue. We ended the year with a moderate overlap test of the 2021 Tesla Model Y.

From the dummy calibrations to post-crash cleanup, this Lego crash test is remarkably similar to the real thing. IIHS's Becky Mueller, with plenty of spare time thanks to the pandemic, recently returned to a childhood hobby of crash testing Legos. Check it out!
Though their designs have changed considerably over the past two decades, late-model SUVs still appear to be more likely to kill pedestrians than cars, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found.
HLDI data show that rates of injury claims related to the drivers and passengers of electric vehicles were more than 40% lower than for identical conventional models over 2011-19.
Strick's strengthened underride guard incorporates additional vertical supports at the edges — a strategy that's been successfully employed by other semitrailer manufacturers as well.
Automatic emergency braking has been shown to reduce front-into-rear crashes reported to police in the U.S. by 50% & front-into-rear crashes with injuries by 56%.

. Studies of intersections in the United States converted from traffic signals or stop signs to roundabouts have found reductions in injury crashes of 72-80% and reductions in all crashes of 35-47%.
Slowing drivers down on city streets gives them more time to react to pedestrians. Centerline hardening seeks to address a specific scenario - drivers making left turns.

Regardless of how a vehicle scores in our evaluations, rear passengers should always wear their seat belts, even on short trips and in ride-hailing vehicles like Uber and Lyft.

Considering a motorcycle? Studies of fatal crashes, insurance claims and test track performance all confirm the importance of antilock braking systems (ABS) for both new and experienced riders.
Going a little bit faster might save a few minutes on a trip, but crashing at a slightly higher speed can make a big difference in your car's ability to provide adequate protection. Read more on our new study with

In a new study of real-world crashes, SUVs caused more serious injuries to pedestrians than cars did when impacts occurred at greater than 19 miles per hour.
For the first time, the safety of people outside the vehicle will become part of our Top Safety Pick program with an evaluation of vehicle-to-pedestrian autobrake.
Evidence is clear that automatic emergency braking is reducing crashes, especially rear enders. It's increasingly available on new vehicles and will be standard across the board by 2022.
Based on an IIHS study, it's estimated that the conversion of 10% of the signalized intersections in the United States to roundabouts would have prevented approximately 52,000 crashes in 2015, including 229 fatal crashes and 32,000 injury crashes.

force drivers to slow down and all but eliminate the most severe types of intersection crashes. A recent Institute focused on two-lane roundabouts, finding that crashes fall over time as drivers become more familiar with them.
HLDI has found that electric vehicles from a variety of manufacturers have lower theft claim rates than comparable vehicles, so it's no surprise that two models from Tesla are among the least-stolen 2016-18 models.
A little more than half of all crashes involving pedestrians took place at intersections in 2018, resulting in more than 6,700 serious injuries to pedestrians and more than 1,500 pedestrian fatalities. Here's how a simple change can help:
Compelling new evidence that lowering the speed limit can significantly reduce speeding in urban settings, improving safety for everybody using the roads.
Study: Women are more likely than men to suffer a serious injury when they are involved in a crash, but much of the heightened risk is related to the types of vehicles women drive and the circumstances of their crashes, rather than physical differences.

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 now earns a good rating for its standard LED reflector headlights for models built after June 2018. Previous models earn an acceptable rating.
A new IIHS survey of Cadillac, Tesla and Nissan/Infiniti owners finds that drivers who use partial automation on a regular basis often treat their vehicles as fully self-driving.
IIHS launched its moderate overlap front crash test in 1995 to push the envelope in vehicle crashworthiness. Early on, the majority of vehicles were rated poor or marginal. Today, all vehicles earn good ratings in this test.
