Equivilant of 3 years rainfall in a matter of hours in Saudi Arabia (180mm) and the outcome is horrific. 3 years equivalent rainfall anywhere would lead to this kind of outcome. Climate change only increases the chances of this happening

What's going on inside the gauging station hut? Many of our sites that calculate flow do this by accurately recording level. Recording the water level directly on the river leads to inaccuracies from riffles, natural river pulsations, vegetation and wind. 1/3 🧵

Flow over our weir at Cricklade on the River Thames. The weir crests are at different heights, in low flow conditions only the lower crest will be active which gives us greater sensitivity (accuracy) of flow measurement for water resource management.

Last month marked the end of a 47year career in Hydrometry for Geoff Hardwicke (seen on the left in the picture). We presented him with his own weather station. Geoff marked the occasion with a walk between 2 offices with lots of colleagues. Anyone know how we download his brain?

#GaugeOfTheWeek : Hartside Raingauge is one of the highest elevation automatic rain gauges in NE England, at over 500m above sea level, situated on the Pennies near Alston. Average annual rainfall here is 1200mm. We have been measuring rainfall here for over 50 years. #Hydrometry

#GaugeOfTheWeek : River Tanat at Llanyblodwel. This station is vital for both river regulation and flood warning. Opened in 1973, its one of our longer running stations in @EnvAgencyMids area and also a beautiful place to work 😀. #Hydrometry @RobDaviesEA

Meet Dawn for #WomenInHydrometry : I work with National Hydrometric Systems & Data which means lots of variety– rainfall data 1 day, tidal the next. Access to our data is growing & I love the interesting & sometimes obscure ways it’s used! 21 yrs & happy to still be in Hydrometry!

Whilst weirs offer a good structure for river flow monitoring they can hide dangers. A mesmerising visual representation of what can happen if you get too near a weir. The circulating current can keep pulling you back in. Be very careful around weir structures #Hydrometry

Major upgrade at Sutton Courtenay on the Thames completed in the last few days - Thames #Hydrometry working with others to upgrade the flow monitoring station and the nearly 40 year old under-river ducting to carry new cables for a brand new Ultrasonic flow gauge. @EnvAgencySE

#Hydrometry team carrying out a level survey at East Mills Flume. We periodically check structures to confirm nothing has moved to ensure calculated flow is as accurate as possible. This site has been recording valuable data since 1961 feeding into international climate studies.
