in 9 AD, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was fought. Three Roman legions under the command of Publius Varus were led into an ambush by the German Arminius. A Roman slaughter ensued and the crushing defeat became one of the worst military disasters in Roman history

Curiiously the 1st time the Romans were defeated, in the sense that with for example Pathia and Carthage they suffered much larger set backs, but these lead to larger armies and reconquest although some of this with Germanicus essentially led to 1st perm defensive line on Rhine

Augustus told Marcus Agrippa that this was one of 2 big problems for him at that time. The other was the partying behaviour of his daughter Julia, so he had her exiled to a small island, with instructions that she be denied access to alcohol and male visitors.

Prime example of treachery, deciept, and violation of trust. It was not a tactical battle won on a level playing field but more of an ambush.
@HistoryHit
The attack took place in the forest. The Roman troops could not form up into their normal defensive positions. Thus the slaughter took place.

"Quintus Varus, give me back my legions" -Augustus. The Roman Empire never fully recovered from this defeat and became more Germanized over time.
