250 years ago today Captain James Cook set off on the Endeavour on his momentous first voyage to explore the Pacific Ocean. To celebrate #Cook250 we have made a programme all about Cook and his legendary vessel. Watch now only on History Hit TV

@HistoryHit "Discovered Australia"? Even if you (like the Europeans of the time) ignore the Indigenous people who've lived here for a mere 60,000 years, the first European landing was in 1606, by the Dutch. Cook was the first European to explore the east coast.

@HistoryHit Um... there were already Indigenous people living in all those Islands. The aborigines, the Maori and the Polynesians discovered Australia, NZ and the Hawaiian Islands.

@HistoryHit Cook did not discover Australia, I guess these are 'alternative facts' to sell your show right?

@HistoryHit With Australian Indigenous here first, there were many contacts prior to European "discovery", many from the modern country of Indonesia and other near islands etc also came to Australia before 1788.

@HistoryHit What an embarrassment to proper historians. The type of โ€˜factsโ€™ and attitudes that led to Brexit. Cringeworthy.

@HistoryHit The genocidal pedophile Craptain Crook was NOT the first to circumnavigate NZ! Indigenous Maori of aotearoa NZ named the North Island a Stingray because its shaped like one. And it is. Now how do you think they knew that unless, duh, they already circumnavigated NZ! For fucksakes

@HistoryHit Pity about the daft comments from the angry brigade on here. If I go to Ireland for the first time I've discovered Ireland. So many people full of anger stops them from understanding Contextual English! I live walking distance from his child hood home, he's a local hero.

@HistoryHit As far as Europeans were concerned the Dutch made seven voyages to Australia long before him in the previous century. Cook wasnโ€™t even the first Englishman to visit Australia - William Dampier set foot on Australian soil some 80 yrs earlier. @TwoPaddocks

@HistoryHit as so many have pointed out already - he did not discover Australia, he did not discover Hawaii, he was not the first to circumnavigate New Zealand. There were people there already. This is dumb bullshit.
