Looking to work with more session players. Are any of my twitter followers musicians who can record themselves? and wants to get involved in film and game scores? Reply to this tweet!
If you constantly think your work is shit, it means you are dangling the carrot of quality far enough infront of yourself that you will always continue to improve. What's bad to you today you might have called a masterpiece a few years back! Don’t let it get you down. Embrace it!
Any one else get this…. I know I can compose music, I have proved it and done it a million times…But do you ever get a few bars in to a new cue sometimes and just sit back like… What is this shit...I have no idea what I am doing.
HoW dO I eVeN mUsIc!!!!
If you would have told me even 5 years ago my IMDB page would look like this one day, I would have called you mental. NEVER give up on your dream. Passion and perseverance will take you places you didn’t even know existed. Love you lot!!!
Great time at the Finnish 🇫🇮 Independence Day party here in LA. Had an awesome chat about meta narratives and the lore economy with the incredible
@SamLakeRMD
a true modern artist!
Ha I have a copyright claim against my latest ‘Writing Uplifting Music’ video...On a track I wrote, from scratch IN the video. This level of copyright protection is ridiculous. How are we supposed to know of every single melody ever written at all times. Law needs updating.
Hey all, Incredibly excited to finally be able to share with you that I recently had the chance to write a collection of original music for the final season of Star Trek Picard! Huge thanks to
@ComposerBarton
for having me on board his team.
The dream has come full circle and finally been fulfilled! Just had an incredible time talking on a panel discussing Metal Gear music with non other than Harry Gregson-Williams himself, the reason I became a composer on the first place!!
We need an official name for that feeling when you take a few days away from composing, then when you return, not only have you forgotten how to compose, but you are not sure what music even is anymore......Am I alone on that one? 🎼🤨
Death Stranding was an incredible experience for me. After moving to LA I spend 90% of my life alone in my studio working, so I found something deeply powerful about feeling that connection to all the other players across the world. Brilliant!
What it means to be a composer today covers so many different skillsets that its very unlikely you will ever learn it all, which will fuel imposter syndrome when you hear something you don't yet know how to do. Just focus on your strengths and commit to always learning!
It finally happened. I have so many sample libraries now I have literally forgotten what some do. I am not sure if I will be live tomorrow, but I feel like we should do a retroactive stream soon looking at all the gems time forgot! and what still holds up. Sound fun?
Ok true story. When I started out on Youtube and people started becoming interested, in my head I always thought, if I can get 20k subs it was worth the time. Today I hit 35k and every single one of you feels like a gift!! Fucking love you lot :)
When I read comments calling me a shit composer I always think... I have already completed my wildest musical dreams...can you imagine what would happen if I ever managed to get good XD
Ever notice how some clients are on your ass morning noon and night to get the work delivered on time….then vanish into thin air when its time to get paid like some shitty Infinity War dust wanker.
Hey all, really excited to finally share that I recently got the opportunity to work on one of the most amazing franchises in gaming history! You can now hear my music featured throughout the recently released Diablo Immortal!
So Project CHAOS, got pirated and of course our sales fell off a cliff at the same time. Just for those of you who care, CHAOS was helping me save up for a house for my family. So if you pirated it fuck you, you heartless cunt.
Should I do a ‘first look’ at Spitfire’s BBC Orchestra sample library?
I may have to run a fundraiser to get it, but in principle would you be interested?
Went over and spoke to Christian Henson from Spitfire at NAMM. I apologised for the way things happened last year and we shook hands and had a great chat. Was actually quite pleasant. It’s nice to have that whole thing finally put to bed and off my mind.
Incredibly excited to let you all know that I recently had the incredible opportunity to write additional music for the new Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 video game, as part of the awesome Jack Wall 's music team. I think we nailed it.
Soundtrack out tonight!
When I was leaving college and looking to go into higher education in music I was rejected from the schools I wanted to attend because I had low grades (I suck at exams) Since then I have worked on all of my dream projects as a composer! Never give up!
#ShareYourRejection
The only time you ever get to hear what your track ACTUALLY sounds like is when you show it to someone for the first time and you can see their reaction. All of a sudden, like veil being lifted, you are confronted with your own shitness 😂
Spotify telling artists they can be among the 'Most Recommended' if they reduce their royalty share is literally an attempt to pay people in exposure. Don't ever cave to people who undervalue your art.
Hey guys sorry for the delay but the Maneater Official Video Game Soundtrack is finally OUT NOW!!!! Super excited for you guys to check this one out. So proud of how it turned out. Let me know what you think!
.
@WavesAudioLtd
Please help me understand this. So the plugins I paid outright for, but did not yet update, I now can no longer use and HAVE to subscribe to your new subscription service to use those plugins I already own outright? Are you sure that is legal? We shall see.
The thing people don't realize with AI music is its not just the creators who are fucked its the: highly trained musicians, Studio space to record them, engineers, mics makers to record them, DAW creators to record into, makers of plugins used to mix. Instrument makers.
As a creative, fear is an interesting thing. When I fear a deadline it spurs creativity and solutions. However I realized that without a deadline the fear manifests as 'is the work is good enough', leading to harsh self criticism. Learning to control the fear is essential.
Compose Quiet. Mix Loud. Re-listen Quiet.
Certain things will stick out when you turn everything down that you just never hear with speakers turned up. And most people will hear your mix quiet.
BTW however you feel about the result of the Spitfire/Westworld competition result, DO NOT take it out on the guy that won! Like you, he did his thing and submitted what he thought was his best work. If anything y'all should tell the geezer good job :)
Ok DAW developers…new idea. How about a colour gradient over the names of plugins in a mixer window, that show how CPU heavy they are. Green for low CPU Red for High. That way when a session chugs we know the plugin to bypass immediately!
@SteinbergMedia
@Ableton
I couldn’t disagree more with composers who give the advice “Don’t listen to film music.” Music is a language, you wouldn’t try to learn Japanese by never listening to it.
Harry Gregson-Williams and his work on Metal Gear are literally the reason I became a composer. So I am overwhelmed with pride and excitement to be speaking on the music of Metal Gear panel alongside him. Its a literal dream come true! Hope to see some of you there in a few days!
We are honored to announce the one and only Harry Gregson-Williams will be joining MGSCON for the Music of MGS panel to discuss his decade-long work composing the music of Metal Gear Solid.
I wish twitter/facebook had a political/news filter. So all those tweets went onto a separate space, so I can enjoy interacting and following my friends lives without fucking being forced into choosing sides in a fucking culture war. I just wanna entertain people ffs xD
‘I want the music to sound like the temp (which was written and recorded over a year with a huge production budget, live orchestra, pro mix and master at the end)….Here is 24 hours, $10, and an old box of shoe shine I don't need to get it done'
How many of you have been here xD
This is genuinely a career highlight for me. Check out ‘The Assassin’ track I wrote for the Honor Of Kings video game played by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. Now available on Youtube!
Hey
@SteinbergMedia
this is gunna sound mental BUT do you think sometime, just to see how it goes, we could have the option to flip the midi window on its side so we have keyboard at the bottom. Its actually easier to read the notes/chords as its laid out like the piano.
Without getting to into it, I am going to take a few weeks away from streaming to focus on some health stuff. Nothing to worry about, just need the time to get a bit better so im not ill every stream. I want them to be better and I can’t do that without fixing me first! Cya soon!
As Picard comes to an end, I just wanted to say thanks again to Stephen Barton for allowing me to contribute to his fantastic score, it was an incredible honor to help tell such an awesome story through our music!!! Such an incredible team! Hope you all enjoyed!
@ComposerBarton
Super happy to be nominated for a Hollywood Music In Media award for my work on Honour Of Kings!
Can’t wait for you guys to hear all the latest stuff we have been working on. Until then, here is a ‘quiet’ version of one of my main themes!
Perhaps the most accurate review I have read about myself.
"I like Daniel James' reviews. He goes deep and is honest enough to say "I fucking love this oboe" two minutes after he has called the French horn a useless slut.” -GMT Vicontrol
For those enjoying
@ryan_connolly
and
@filmriot
’s new short film SENTiNEL, here is the original music I composed for it. I got to crack out the synths on this one!
Was awesome to see
@SteinbergMedia
highlight my studio on Instagram this past week. For those of you who want to see it in its 2019 goodness (and with my head not blocking the goodstuff), here she be:
I am not hard on Spitfire because I ‘hate’ them, as an industry leader I just want them to be the best they can be. With todays 60gb HZ Strings update covering some of my biggest issues with it you can see why its worth giving them a nudge every now and then.
Holy shit, I just surpassed thirty thousand subscribers on Youtube! That’s a lot of people!!
Super humbled that you guys care enough to follow me on this mental journey :)
Pro tip. When you sign onto a new project you will be full of ideas and inspiration. Over time, familiarity will decrease that. So at the start of the project create a long form ‘suite’ piece from which you can pull elements and midi later, when ideas are harder!
One of my favourite feelings in the world is having a progression that works, a melody that works, then you hit the first note on that counter melody idea and everything snaps together and the idea presents itself in its final form.
When you put your art out into the world it no longer belongs to you. It belongs to the world! It's there for people to love it, hate it, criticise it. be offended by it, inspired by it, and everything in between. The discussion of art is what gives it it’s value!!!
I am going to be running a music related talk show stream weekly where we discuss big topics in the industry and viewers can call in to voice their opinions on air.
Would love to hear what you think of the concept and which topics you want to discuss!
After 10 years I am finally retiring my M-Audio BX8s. These legends carried me through MGSV, 2 Call of Duty's, a Terminator movie, and most recently ManEater. They have been with me from Battle to Tokyo and they are finally bowing out in LA. Thanks for everything lads!
Its 2077, Gamestop finalises its acquisition of Amazon-Disney Inc for a one whole
#dogecoin
after its value skyrockets out of the stratosphere as
@elonmusk
simply tweets the word doge into our brain chips from his mansion on mars. It was a good day.
When I started out I was giving composing the whole fake it till you make it approach. But I was so worried about people realising I was fake I secretly practised a lot to get really good at it so no-one would find out.
On days like today its worth reminding everyone that while it may seems like it sometimes, music is not a competition, it is an art. Its an expression of emotion and creativity combined. Aim for your own personal greatness and not just what others tell you is important.
Huge thanks to the incredible
@jackwallmusic
for bringing me in to collaborate on the next Call Of Duty Black Ops COLD WAR soundtrack. Its always an honour working with you Jack.
My template starts with the best intentions…but man, after notes, re-edits, conforms…theres percussion in the brass group, choirs singing in the piano bus. And SOMETHING is constantly getting stuck and I can’t find it.
Just me?
Quick exciting update for me. Just wanted to let you all know that I had the extreme honour of writing additional music on Matthew Margeson 's score to the new BlumHouse horror film Truth Or Dare!!!! The film is out in cinemas this Friday the 13th!
All dubbing mixers should have to listen to their final mixes with sleeping children in the room, with the volume set so they can hear dialogue. And then realise how annoying it is when that pop song comes in at +200db
AI is now at the point that from now on, unless I see people's writing process, I will just assume they didn't write the music they put out. My interest is in the art itself, not just the result. AI will put out some impressive shit. But the prompters didn't create it.
With everything going on in the world it didn’t feel right doing an April fools joke today. So instead we are selling our libraries at the cheapest they have ever been. 60% off anything in our store. Just use the code: FUCK2020
This is legit, not a joke.
Wooo we hit 38,000 subscribers on Youtube today! Again I don’t know many of you personally but, genuinely, thank you for coming along on this journey with me. I know its a bit of a messy ride but smooth seas don’t make great sailors!!
My first ever live recorded soundtrack recorded at AIR Studios London, co-written with the awesome Anne Kathrin-Dern is now available to stream! Check it out here and let me know what you think.
I was just informed by my agency that I won 2 bronze medals at the 'Global Music Awards' in the Original Score and Game Music categories for my work on the Life After: Snowland expansion! Huge thank you to everyone who helped out!
Working on a concept for a livestream series. It’s gunna be called the Graveyard Sessions, I’m going to go through cues/sketches I have written and discarded... then try to turn them Into finish pieces. Thoughts? Suggestions??
I hate with a passion that I can’t update my perpetual licensed ProTools just to make it work with Catalina. I don’t care for new features. I just want what I bought to work. How
@Avid
Pro Tools is still the industry standard with this bullshit, I will never understand.
Music theory is like a catapult…If you understand the physics and mathematics behind using one you will hit your target, quickly and efficiently. If you don’t you can still strap in and have a blast fucking shit up….and maybe hit your target every once and a while.
