People have forgotten or never knew what all women feared before 1967 Act. They talked about the pill but wasn't widely available and for a while only for married women.

Yes this is history that is never taught in schools. It’s a vital part of women’s liberation and their fight for rights

It features a lot of social and political issues, but from what I've seen of it, there's a lot of 'happily ever after'. Most things resolve themselves in a positive way and the nunnery and surgery seem to be paragons of progressive opinion for the era. Am I misreading it?

Well it certainly aims to leave the audience feeling good for sure, but there’s a lot of good issues debated along the way in many episodes. Today’s was exceptionally good at achieving both

And as Doctor Turner remarked, it’s even today still a case of “old men in Lords making decisions for society”. Not a lot has changed.
