What an excellent ep of #CalltheMidwife - superb handling of political issues, hot topics of the day, with women frustrated by the old male society oppressing opinions and their lives. Love the way it battles with religious issues too. One of the thematically deepest dramas on TV

@GRALWrites @efrogwraig People have forgotten or never knew what all women feared before 1967 Act. They talked about the pill but wasn't widely available and for a while only for married women.

@ValStev24404147 @efrogwraig Yes this is history that is never taught in schools. It’s a vital part of women’s liberation and their fight for rights

@GRALWrites It features a lot of social and political issues, but from what I've seen of it, there's a lot of 'happily ever after'. Most things resolve themselves in a positive way and the nunnery and surgery seem to be paragons of progressive opinion for the era. Am I misreading it?

@philwoodford Well it certainly aims to leave the audience feeling good for sure, but there’s a lot of good issues debated along the way in many episodes. Today’s was exceptionally good at achieving both

@GRALWrites And as Doctor Turner remarked, it’s even today still a case of “old men in Lords making decisions for society”. Not a lot has changed.
