If, instead of a quota, the government were to implement a subsidy for firms to hire disabled workers, the effect on welfare would be positive because the subsidy would allow disabled workers to sort into sectors where they are relatively more productive.

In aggregate, a quota for disabled workers increases the employment of workers with disabilities at the cost of non-disabled workers. The policy is costly because it is size dependent and does not take into account that disabled workers are more productive in some sectors.

We found that for low willingness to pay for sanctions, i.e., if countries are not very committed to sanctioning Russia but still want to do something, the best thing to do is a uniform tariff on all Russian products of about 20%. 3/n

I use an event study comparing firms inspected by the Division of Equal Opportunity today against those that are going to be inspected in the future. These inspections led to a decrease in firm size despite increasing the hiring of disabled workers.

@pontus_rendahl My undergrad was in heterodox economics. I studied a Marx, Keynes, Kalecki, and others. I gained a lot of intuition. But, it is clear to me that most heterodox economists that I interacted with could not solve a simple maximization problem.

@WilliamGale2 I was planning on going to the job market early with an exciting project. When I found a paper very similar was forthcoming in RESTUD. I did not drop the project but I also did not went to the job market with it. Despite similar identification, our insights are very different.

There are papers doing diff-in-diff with lagged controls. The idea is very tempting: lagged controls can reduce the variance and are not affected by the treatment, right? Not quite... #EconTwitter , a 🧵 on why adding lagged controls bias your estimates.

This tariff policy is very similar to what the UK, Canada, Australia, and Japan have recently implemented. We predict it would decrease Gross National Income (GNI) by 0.8% in Russia without any significant cost to the EU or the US. 4/n

If countries are more serious about sanctions and are willing to sacrifice at least US$0.7 for each US$1 drop in Russian consumption, an embargo on Russia’s mining and energy products - with tariffs above 50% on all other products - is the optimal policy. 5/n
