College golf, food & basketball,
@Golfweek
/Sagarin rankings, high school basketball official, former college golf coach & PGA Tour caddy & Iowa State alum
Without going through my phone log or text messages I can’t tell you how many coaches I have spoken with today... And one thing is common in the conversations: driving the van after a round on the day of is always their biggest concern/fear on the job.
Brian Laesch, who has operated Golfstat since the passing of his father Mark five years ago from ALS, has also died from ALS.
Our thoughts are with the Laesch & Golfstat families.
The University of Southwest scoresheets (men & women) remain on the scoreboard at Ranchland Hills Golf Club in Midland, Texas where the teams were competing in the TankLogix Collegiate.
Chatter that the NCAA may make a decision on fall sports at the end of the month. So, we have two weeks... wear your mask America... We want college golf!
FIRST CLASS MOVE!
For winning the
@AHAInvite
,
@GatorsGolf
coach JC Deacon was awarded a
@FullSwingGolf
simulator. Earlier this week
Kennesaw State’s TrackMan was stolen from their van. Deacon passed his new gift along to the
@KSUOwlsMGolf
program during the awards ceremony! 💯
So, this NIL thing is certainly going in directions not many predicted.
Two female college basketball players (twins) transfer from Fresno St to Miami. They sign NIL deals that equal $500k for each over 2 year period.
Meanwhile the average WNBA salary last year was $121,000!
I have not tweeted about you know what since this started in May, but I think everyone knows
@golfstat
Live Scoring and
@golfweek
team rankings have been working just fine 🤷♂️… just like it has been for 20+ years!
Play gets started tomorrow at the
@barstoolsports
Let Them Play Classic at
@WhirlwindGolf
@RiggsBarstool
speaking to the players at the welcome reception.
“It’s really cool you all showed up. It would have sucked to put this tournament on and none of you would have showed up.”
It appears the Univ. of Southwest had played a 36 hole day and was driving home (100+ miles) for the night only to return today to play the final 18 holes of the TankLogix Collegiate. Today's final round has been cancelled.
College basketball is playing teams from other conferences and well outside their regions and they are indoors!
College golf, knowing it can easily social distance, would not have any problem seeing teams resume somewhat a "normal" schedule this spring - if we are playing golf!
Do we really need to cancel the rest of the spring season? Can’t we just suspend or postpone tournaments for a couple of weeks and reevaluate at that point?
If it turns out all of these college golf coaches have a lot of time off... I could run that 2-person coaching staff tournament I have always wanted to do!
Texas extends it's streak to 13 - the nation's longest when it comes to advancing from regional play to the national championship...
13 - Texas
12 - Illinois
9 - Oklahoma
8 - Auburn
7 - Oklahoma State
6 - Stanford
6 - Vanderbilt
5 - Arizona State
5 - Clemson
4 - Baylor
This seems to make sense especially for college golf.
A+ to the West Coast Conference for finding proper balance.
Fall sports postponed with an exception for individual institutions to compete in low risk sports: GOLF & tennis.
Winter sports start on schedule in November.
Evidence there is still a lot of good in this world… Ran out of gas today on the highway near Eastern Kentucky University and to the rescue
@EKUMGolf
@justinbegley2_
& Malik Dao! They wouldn’t even let me pay them back for the gas can & gas. THANK YOU!
#collegegolf
Lack of an
#ncaagolf
championship title may leave this team a bit incomplete, but it was one of the best years in college golf... and don't tell me otherwise! They are the NCAA stroke-play champs... by 31!
Not a big deal because it was a 4,800-yard course? Well, I recently played in a 4-man scramble from 4,854 yards (par 71) and we torched it for a 9-under 62! The winners were at 15-under 56. I challenge any critics to go tee it up from 4,800 and report back
From what I have seen in college golf the last few years I strongly believe in high school golf... ALL rival schools should have an annual 18-hole match play contest! With a traveling 🏆 the winner keeps!
Admins looking for head women’s golf coach? See below.
Courtney Jones, recently let go at Oklahoma State, sent Greg Robertson a text congratulating him and wishing him the best! Offered any help in his transition from Kent to Stillwater.

For the past month, each day I have a different thought on if we will see college golf this fall. Starting today & until we have concrete answer I will tweet YES or NO to college golf based on what I have read, who I have talked to and what I have been told.
July 27 = YES
Honestly, it’s sort of hard to say NO team college golf this fall... when so many events are being played at all levels with folks traveling to these events from far away places.
An NIT tournament for M&W college golf would be fun right about now.
15 teams play 36 holes... then top 8 or 4 play match play?
16 teams play straight match play?
54-hole stroke play event?
Thoughts? Golfweek could host it!
D3 nation has to be enjoying Christopher Newport's Alex Price's run this week at the U.S. Amateur... Price, a senior this fall who was ranked No. 7 in NCAA Div. III, has advance to the quarterfinals and will face one of the best in D1 golf in Sam Bennett (Texas A&M).
There are more officials retiring or quitting than getting into the business. Very proud dad to ref with my son today... it was his first game blowing the whistle!
@RefereeMag
In case you missed it yesterday....
@IlliniMGolf
rallied on the back nine to win the LSU Invitational (w/12 of 14 SEC teams in the field). The Illini are perfect through two events this year.
Announcement. Inviting the following women’s golf teams to AZ next week:
Oregon St, Houston, Miami FL, North Texas, Purdue, Mississippi State, Tulsa, Sam Houston State, Kennesaw State, East Tennessee State, Jacksonville State, Quinnipiac.
& several individuals

Just thinking: If the college golf season is TRULY over... Do you think there will be any consideration for S/As to get an extra year of eligibility to have another chance to compete in the championship segment?
Wouldn't it make more sense if it was up to each school if they want to play golf (sports).? Why does conference dictate if they can play?
Asking for a friend.
Meanwhile on the other course here at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex... Purdue women’s golf coach Devon Brouse makes the first ACE of his golfing career & shoots 68 which is a few shots better than his age! 😉
No (2020) spring season. More fall season cancelations everyday. What makes us think the winter will be any different or next spring? Will it ever stop? Should we learn to proceed and live with it?
Here is something that does not happen very often…
Findlay
@OilersGolf
win the D2 women’s national championship Capping off a PERFECT spring winning all 8 events played this spring.
8 for 8!
Seems like a good t-shirt idea!
Very hard to watch high school golf. I have taught my son to play by the rules and how important it is to protect the field.
And when a player is not truthful about his hole-by-hole score and the “committee” says nothing they can do because the player already signed his card! 🤦♂️
Today in College Golf:
@OU_MGolf
makes 12 birdies in final 5 holes to win The Gopher Invitational. That makes two-in-a-row for the Sooners, who are clearly the No. 1 team in college golf at this point in the season!
The response has been very much in favor of supporting a coaches tournament. I have been wanting to do this for years, but always difficult to find a date. The idea would be a schools coaching staff would make up a 2-person team. More details coming soon. Tentative for late May!
2021 is looking better...
Learned today the Pac-12 teams are full go for spring season. They are allowed to play maximum dates. No restrictions on anything unless a school imposes their own.
One of the more under recognized or underrated (whatever you want to call it) coaches in college golf is
@KUMensGolf
Jamie Bermel. Jayhawks win school’s first regional title today and are headed to Stillwater.
Division I women's golf TODAY!
The University of South Alabama Intercollegiate is being played at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course. Seven teams in attendance.
The number of teams pledging $1 per birdie at their upcoming tournament towards the fundraising effort for the University of Southwest golf team is growing fast!
After a 65 & 67 in the first two rounds at the Southeastern Amateur, Georgia Southern’s Ben Carr set the 110 year course record at the Country Club of Columbus with 61 today.
Back home from 2 weeks at NCAAs and had a person tell me his three favorite golf events to watch on TV are... in order:
1) Ryder Cup
2) Masters
3) NCAA golf (men & women)
@GolfChannel
I’ve had parents of daughters say to me they are going to get their daughter playing golf because they heard that scholarships go unused and it’s the easiest sport to get a scholarship... I tell them no and if they want an easier path. Pick up rowing!
Playing as an individual,
@PurdueMensGolf
Cole Bradley goes bogey-free 66 and is the clubhouse leader after the morning wave at the
#NCAAgolf
championship
Just toured the new IU golf course... it’s going to be a par 71 and stretch to 7,900 yards. Not only is instantly going to be a very good college golf course, it is going to be one of the better and more challenging layouts in Indiana.
Day 1 thoughts... Blessings is a very hard golf course!
Is it fair? I think so.
Could it be set up better? Yes.
Most feel like there is no need for THIS course to be almost 6,400 yards. 6,100 yards can be just fine and why not see some more red numbers?
Am I wrong?
