An interesting thing about working-class friendships is how we communicate at times entirely through abuse. Not a "hello" or "how are you?", just "bawbag", "scumbag", and whatever else. We don't ask about family or anything, just straight out slagging one another for no reason.

People may consider that toxic but actually, you can only do that as a sign of endearment if you're close enough with the person. It's a comfort knowing you CAN abuse yer pal, and it's you just letting them know you're thinking of them - even if it means slaughtering them.

New trainers? New haircut? A picture of yer dinner on Facebook? Doesn't matter, it's all shite, and you need to tell yer pal how shite it all is. Because that's real love, in a weird but wonderful way.

@guy_ingerson Notice that with my gay mates but never see them doing it to our straight pals, just the lassies and so maybe it's that closeness and trust in comfort again. A dunno. Can only speak from experience on that.

@Gavin_F_Brewis 🤭🤭 the only time my mates are "nice" and "polite" is around people they don't know or on the pull with "posher" women. Ha.
