here in Brazil after the Worker's Party got into power they decided that everyone would be "educated", as in, get through the elementary and high school. So unless a kid had like a 80% absence rate the teachers were forced to pass them to the next grade.

Sophism. Education is not a product, it is a process which does not end with and is not limited by school, which is just an institutional basis for home and self education. Public education produced world wide literacy.

It is all about standards Gilbert. The bar is set so low those students in our state run schools can easily step over it. It’s the only exercise they get.

Frankly, the main reason for this is because most people are simply not interested in most academic fields. It just isn't relevant to a normal life. And those in school who are interested receive only a partial and malformed education.
