sounded, every church bell rang, every fog horn blew, and ships sounded their whistles.

GGB sidewalks CLOSED to bikes and pedestrians at this time.
CHP is on scene with no estimated time for reopening. Drivers should expect significant delays & avoid using the Bridge where possible.

is a result of a Wind Retrofit Project intended to preserve aerodnamics as the Suicide Deterrent System is installed. it occurs with winds fr NW & SW. The District is actively testing ways to mitigate. ❤️🌉
The Suicide Deterrent Net on the Bridge is 80% complete & having a positive effect. According to an article in

, "All around the world where they have put barriers on bridges... suicides have dropped"

It took over 4 years from the start of construction in Jan 1933 for the Golden Gate Bridge to welcome pedestrians & cars onto its freshly paved roadways in May 1937, however, the concept for the Bridge was dreamt up well before the 1930s. Read more:

Happy New Year from the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District! Today, the Bridge roadway & sidewalks are open, the Welcome Center is closed, and parking lots at the Welcome Center & Vista Point will be closed, 11AM to 5PM.
Did you know that on average, approximately 40 million vehicles cross the Golden Gate Bridge every year? No matter how many times we cross it, it never gets old. 🌉❤️
Beginning Mon 4/5, people biking & walking on the Golden Gate Bridge east sidewalk will notice sections of the pathway narrowed due to the ongoing installation of the Suicide Deterrent Net. The easts sidewalk will remain open, but pls be cautious through narrowed pathways.
REMINDER! Golden Gate Bridge Alert 7/24/2022 San Francisco Marathon. East & West Sidewalks closed from 5am - 10:30am during the race. Bike shuttles will be provided. See more information here:
Did you know that when the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, tolls were collected both ways? On October 16, 1968, toll collection changed to SB lanes only. Happy 86th Anniversary GGB! 🌉🎈 More info on tolls:

The Golden Gate Bridge seismic retrofit will strengthen the Bridge against major earthquakes & disasters. 3 of the 4 phases of the project have already been completed, and the final phase is scheduled to begin late 2024. Read more here:
