If you're like me, you were enthralled with the passing display by Andrรฉ Onana in the UCL Final against Man City. ๐จ๐ฒ
The calmness and the composure were something to behold (if not a little TOO exciting @ times ๐ ). He showed the ability to break lines with a well-placed pass or throw, and was basically playing as a sweeper at times - that's how far up he was.
With a move to Man U seemingly imminent, I wanted to dig into the
#s
a bit to see if Onana warrants a look for our FPL teams -- if priced correctly, of course. ๐ท๐ท
Andrรฉ Onana to Manchester United, itโs finally here we go! ๐จ๐ด๐จ๐ฒ
Clubs are closing in on the agreement then Onana will travel for medical tests and contract signing.
Man Utd set to request VISA for Onana for USA trip.
Ten Hag will have the new goalkeeper he wanted.
๐ท If priced at ยฃ5.0m - which is what I'd expect tbh - he offers a route into a top 4 def - and ยฃ0.5m savings on Luke Shaw (currently the 2nd highest picked def @ 35%). This is the key point IMO!
๐ท If priced at ยฃ5.5m, however, it may not make sense...
I saw the passing stats for AO last season and they were impressive!
Summary: Onana @ Inter 22/23 ๐ฎ๐น
โซ๏ธ 224 short passes (5-15 yds) - 100% completion
โซ๏ธ 386/395 med passes (15-30 yds) - 98%
โซ๏ธ 220/402 long passes (> 30 yds) - 55%
โซ๏ธ per 90: 35/43
โซ๏ธ 81% completion overall
Looking at his stats with Ajax ๐ณ๐ฑ (where his mgr was ETH ofc), we see that the stats generally hold true. Around 30-40 passes attempted per game, just above 80% overall completion.
I am no BPS expert like
@aboveaveragefpl
or
@BakerFPL343
but that spells bonus points to me.
At least 30 passes attempted and 80%+ completion = 4 BPS. That is a nice bump if/when ManU get a CS, meaning we could see Onana getting additional FPL pts.
For lack of a better comparison, looking at last year's PL stats... the best GK for baseline BPS passing pts were Steele, Ederson & Allison, all above 85% completion. Makes sense, these are teams that play out from the back generally and don't play the long ball.
Assuming the stats hold from last year, we could expect Onana to be top 3-4 for baseline BPS passing points. I have a feeling we might get a jammy assist as well.
For context, last year's baseline BPS (bBPS) for Luke Shaw and David De Gea were:
๐ด Shaw - 14.65 bBPS
๐ด De Gea - 13.42 bBPS
Assuming the other GK metrics stay ~ the same + with improved passing
#s
, might we see Onana above Shaw in BPS in ManU CS games?? ๐ค
I am generally a fan of the ยฃ4.5m keeper, but Onana offers a route to the sturdy Man U defense at a ยฃ0.5m savings compared to Luke Shaw with quite good potential for passing bonus points.
I am not 100% settled on it but I think it certainly warrants a tinker in my team.
The one concern for me is if Onana would be in line for save points in those games where he doesn't keep a CS?
Assuming Onana comes in at ยฃ5.0m, is he in your thoughts? Or are you sticking with Shaw? What do you guys & gals think?!
๐ข Likes/RTs appreciated! ๐ค
@ManOnPod_Craig
Yeah, I agree. That is a worry.
I guess the point is Ramsdale is the same price as Gabriel, Zinch, etc. whereas most of us are expecting Onana to come in at 0.5 m cheaper than Shaw.
Further analysis required. ๐ค
