@jacobwolff @yesallcrops They said the consumer section of 3M respirators have been asking for black, but none has been developed. I think a consumer pull demand campaign would be a good idea. People should start badgering 3M so they know there’s a demand for them.

Black with no logo is the only acceptable mask for much of the public, and yet @3M , Drager, etc can’t get their shit together and just make a 200ff mask that bypasses outdated industry habits. Every day they don’t make a textless black mask, more people are getting long covid.

I’m not sure people understand how unregulated this space is. The mask on the bottom is a vertical bifold with bread twist tie nosewire and happens to be a legit N95. Its typical protection(hmff) is 30 times worse than the *worst series of another respirator. This is still legal.

Reminder that VFlex Smalls are not the smallest high-end respirators. They might be tighter than Auras (despite being longer overall) but VFlex smalls are looser than Trident S and XS. If VFlex 9105S or 1804S is too big, try a Trident RTCFFP2 S (second one from the bottom).

@mryoung151 @3MCanada It’s a harder problem: The shape that works best isn’t an overfitted scan of a person’s face in a neutral position or any single position, it’s a flexible device that holds a seal at the extremes of motion and every point in between.

@CaliforniaCodes The valve doesn’t need reversed airflow to close - the mechanics of it make it close based on pressure, so it’s already closed before you finished exhaling. It doesn’t open again until after you’ve started exhaling, so there’s not much opportunity for outside air to flow back.

Their cord locks have magnetic springs. Even it you do a modification that isn’t magnetic, there might be a nonmagnetic metal or compound in the plastic that can cause heating. The only way to check is with an MRI machine. Just use a mask that’s entirely tested. Plenty of papers.

@jfroh @3M @ChristosArgyrop @singingsox @AstroKatie Moldex made a respirator(2600) where they snuck the required lettering on the headband and it passed reqs, 3M could also have the text be on the underside and barely visible. Or better yet they could also ignore outdated conventions and do what’s best for the general public.

There are no overall average performance standards for masks yet. Anywhere. Pretty much just material standards, with caricatures of structural requirements attached. It’s not what anyone wants to hear. There are N95’s and FFP3’s that work on literally nobody reproducibly.

Chinese standard earloop KN95s are as leaky as surgical masks. Both have a fit factor of around 2-3 in published studies (pass mark = 100). KN95s can't legally be sold in most countries as respirators. It is not a good standard. Photo: @fittestmyplanet

I guess this has to be a thing. *Ahem* Purchase link thread for Non-European buyers of 1863+’s and other Aura FFP3s: Source #1 . Car Zone, eBay (The first place I found them.) Great for samples. Yes they’re real. Unpredictable shipping.

Profile pic: Here’s a version of the meme that you can make into your profile pic. And we can all find new and creative ways to ask @3MSafety @3MUK and @3Mnews to finally make a few black Auras for people outside the Brazilian government.

JedX 5141 is definitely a contender right now. The false positive pass rate on fttpCrash2.5 tests is low, so there is some chance that this model can cover >60% of the adult population. What’s interesting is that it might do surprisingly well on tests *harder* than fttpCrash2.5.

Just for testers : JEDX 5141 needs adversarial testing. (So does the other mask). But JEDX really needs testing at the small bivariate sizes to find the lower bound M41 score. Definitely not recommending this as a general purpose mask w/o going in for QNFT. #cpccrashcrew

Expanding on the left side. Keep in mind that these tests are hell for masks and are underestimates designed to not overpromise.
