"Teenager's bedroom" is one of my favorite assignments at FZD. Students have to design and use set dressing to visually communicate the teenager's interests, hobbies, pets, etc. This might sound easy, but in reality, it takes a lot of design thinking to make the room look fun.

When learning digital painting, start by creating silhouettes of all your major forms. Then place a backlight to punch up the contrast (regardless of day or night, interior or exterior). This is an easier method to try before diving into the deeper stuff.

We constantly tell our students that concept art is not always about doing epic paintings. Once that phase is over (which is really fun), we often have to get down to the nitty-gritty stuff (not so fun, but required). I spent 2 long weeks doing this for General Grievous on Ep3 😓

More class notes. A fun way to learn about lighting is by treating your scene like a miniature set. Entertainment lighting is rarely "realistic." Instead, multiple lights are used to achieve desired moods. Use b/w flatly lit stock photos and relight them via stage lights.

One of the best ways to build a design portfolio is using the 90/10 rule: 90% grounded, referenced from real world subject matter + 10% change (scale, added tech, materials, etc.). This combo makes your designs believable yet fun. Check out these examples from FZD grad Fangzhou.

Ever get stuck trying to find a design? If this happens, try drawing only side views. Removing perspective allows you to focus entirely on shapes and proportions, making the design process fun and less stressful. You can then extrude the side view into 3d by plotting or software.

One of the easier ways to learn lighting is by "re-lighting" photographs. Find a flatly-lit photo, change it to BW (no need to focus on color for now), and apply a magic hour lighting pass. You can see more of this process in Design Cinema, Episode 98 -

This beautiful set of designs is by our term 3 student, Katherine Chang. She put in so much effort into her work and the results definitely show. I had a lot of fun looking at all the story telling details.

Our term 2 students are going strong (only 6 weeks into the new term). This is the throne room assignment. Students must also integrate an animal motif into the design (animal type is chosen by dice roll). This exercise teaches students about the importance of 1st reads.

Our term 2 FZD students are off to a great start! This is their first assignment called the Teenager's Bedroom. It's a great introduction to learn how to tell story by using visual details.

Our students are having a great start on their new term. The "Teenager's Bedroom" project has been a stable at FZD - a great way to introduce students to the concept of design thinking while staying grounded.

I found one of the easier ways to get started with color is by sticking with R-G-B. Basically, the entire painting is dominated by one hue (Red, Green or Blue). This way, the image is technically in color but still monochromatic. You can also skip 3d, etc. Just keep practicing.
